" A CHRISTMAS CAROL " By: Makayla Little Charles Dickens Family Life, Work, Influences in the time the piece was written, How people reacted to " A Christmas Carol " Charles Dickens Family Life • British novelist Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England. Over the course of his writing career, he wrote the beloved classic novels Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. On June 9, 1870, Dickens died of a stroke in Kent, England, leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished. • In 1822, the Dickens family moved to Camden Town, a poor neighborhood in London. By then the family’s financial situation had grown dire, as John Dickens had a dangerous habit of living beyond the family’s means. Eventually, John was sent to prison for debt in 1824, when Charles was just 12 years old. • Following his father’s imprisonment, Charles Dickens was forced to leave school to work at a boot-blacking factory alongside the River Thames. At the rundown, rodent-ridden factory, Dickens earned six shillings a week labeling pots of “blacking,” a substance used to clean fireplaces. As it turned out, the job became an early launching point for his writing career. Movie Techniques Lighting • The lighting of the original version was great it pin pointed each feature perfectly although I thought that it could have used more light in the really dark spots so you could see the facial expressions. • The lighting of the smurfs version was good I thought that it highlighted each part pretty well and I loved to see the smurfs faces although I thought that it was too dark and to bright it some places. Sound • The sound of the original version was good it represented what each scene was supposed to sound and feel like and with the quiet sound gave you that happy fun feeling with a light feeling of joy and where the sound was really loud it was trying to be dramatic and was trying to give you a sense of fear and • The smurfs version was good I thought that it was perfect in some spots it was a bit too loud but for the most part it was good. Facial Expressions • The facial expressions in the original version were great I thought that they were perfect in some spots and weird in other spots. • The facial expressions in the smurfs version were good I thought that they were good they showed the expression of each character when they reacted to something that they saw of heard. Camera Angle • The camera angle in the original was great and I thought that the angle was perfect in some spots and then in others it was really blurry and I thought it was great for the most part. • The smurfs version was good I thought that it had a lot of great angles of the characters when they had there parties and other gatherings of the smurfs. Color • I thought that the color of the original version was good to showed each needed color of the characters and it helped the prove that these were the perfect colors. • The smurfs version was great it had all these bright fun colors that really brought this movie to life with all the different color and angles it was great. Scrip Techniques Stage Directions • The stage directions of the original version were great I loved how it showed each different direction multiple times to improve your watching experience. • The smurfs version had great stage directions because it's an animated film that shows the real version what animation looks like for there film. Character Dialogue • The character Dialogue is what made the characters who they were I thought that these characters were made and shaped by what they said and how they said it with the expression that was put on there faces to give that deep felling of what the words were trying to tell that person. • The smurfs had great Dialogue and the words that were used were good I thought that they also made the characters who they were and the words that each smurf had was great I thought that they really showed each smurf through the words that they spoke and those words created there own personality and separated them from the others Narrator • The Narrator for the original was good I thought that it was Scrooge as the narrator but I'm still not sure if I'm right but he was great and I loved how he really showed his expressions. • The smurfs truly had that fun silly narrator feel and they were great I loved it because they showed him in many of the scenes telling the story of what Christmas was about and how Scrooge ( grumpy smurf ) changed to be a more happy man when he realized what Christmas was about. Events • The events in the original version were good I loved how the events really showed what this movie was about and it helped you see the full picture of what " A Christmas Carol " was really about and it helped show the people watching what this was about. • The events in the smurfs was good I thought that it really helped put a picture in your mind as to what was going on and how this was represented in each scene of the movie and it was what shaped to movie to feel more touching and heartfelt. Problem • The problem in the original version was good you could clearly see it and I thought that you were able to tell what the problem was in the majority of the scenes there were a few scenes that could have shown a little more of the problem. • The problem of the smurfs version was good you saw what it was in every scene I thought that in some scenes that it wasn't there and I wish that it was there in every scene that was presented. Solution • The solution of the original version was awesome it truly turned the whole story around it showed hoe Scrooge made himself a happier man and that really came through it showed how he went from really a Ba-Humbug kinda guy to a happy Merry Christmas kinda guy. • The solution of the smurfs version was good it showed how Scrooge ( grumpy smurf ) became thankful for his hat that he got from papa smurf every year although he always wanted a hang glider he turned around and became a happy smurf although he would still always be his grumpy self he was thankful for he gift every year. Language • The language of the original version was good I thought that it showed how the story was supposed to play along with the characters and events that were put in place for that scene and how it worked. • The language for the smurfs was good it had the right event to play along with the correct wording of the scene but it also told a separate story through the words used. Dialogue • The dialogue on the original version was good it helped the story move along and it helped push the story along to help you get a good picture of what was going on through the words given to support the scene that they were placed with. • The dialogue of the smurfs version was good it helped the movie play along and fit in with the words and scenes given and it helped push it along to make it make more sense. Mood • The mood of the original version was good it was a mood that you could feel happy in some places and gloomy in others and each different mood was shown through a different emotion or expression of what that scene was trying to tell you through the emotions and expressions that we could see in the movie. • The mood in the smurfs version was good you could see all the moods through emotion and the expressions that were shown to us it really helped with the mood of the whole story and how each part or scene was used to play a different role in each scene to represent a different mood. Tone • The tone of the original version was good it helped the whole story move along through out the whole movie you could see different tones and feelings as to what was going on and how those were to be played out and how they helped the story to move further along in the whole story. • The tone of the smurfs version was good it showed each part of the movie very well it helped you to see what was going on and how it was to be played out with all the different tones that were represented though out the movie and how they effected the overall tone and mood if this story and how it was shown. Theme • The theme of the original version was good it was represented by Scrooge's emotions and his different word choices that he used to make this story more in depth and show you the true message or meaning of Christmas and how you should be grateful or thankful for what you get or have for Christmas. • The theme of the smurfs version was good it showed you what the true meaning or message of Christmas was and it helped you to see what it was all about and you got to see thins through the expressions and emotions that were represented in this story. Characters • The characters in the original version were great they helped you to see what this movie was all about and they helped to make this movie what it is today and how each of the characters had there own way of representing how this movie was to be played out and what it was all about. • The characters in the smurfs version were good I thought that they really helped move the story along with all the words that they were saying and it really helped shape the movie. Literary Devices • The literary devices in the original version were good they showed what the story was staying to tell you with how you were supposed to see this movie as. • The literary devices in the smurfs version were they helped the story move quicker in a good way and help to make the movie make more sense. Setting • The setting of the original version was good it helped to move the story along and help you to understand what it was about and how it was supposed to play out and it was a good setting with all the characters and words that they were speaking. • The setting in the smurfs version was good it helped the movie to be pushed along and help it move forward and help it to be more of a heartfelt movie and setting.
