January 2017 Executive Director: Martin Blaney Trent Court: 252-633-0800 Housing People, Changing Lives New Bern Towers: 252-638-3663 Happy New Year. Happy New You! Every year people make resolutions to lose weight and get healthy. If you are one of them, here are some tips to help you reach your goal. NBHA encourages all residents to improve their lives and being healthy is a great way to start. Set Reachable Goals: Choose an obtainable goal and set a deadline, such as losing three pound in a month. Once you reach that goal, set a new one. This way you can see results more quickly and that will make you work even harder to reach the next goal. Keep Records: If you are struggling with overeating, use a food journal to write down everything you eat each day. You might be surprised how quickly a page fills up! Keep track of inches and pounds you lose to keep you motivated. Workout Friend: Get a friend to work out with you. A support system is very important. You can encourage and motivate each other to continue to work toward a healthy weight. Try New Things: Exercising does not have to be boring! Turn on the radio and dance to the music, walk with friends, try free classes, or rent a Zumba DVD from the library. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr., was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King was one of the most visible active leaders during the civil rights movement. His magnificent speaking ability enabled him to express the demands of African Americans for social justice. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for leading nonviolent civil right demonstrations. Unfortunately, violence ended Kings’ life at the young age of 39. While in Memphis Tennessee he was assassinated. Martin Luther King, Jr., became only the second American whose birthday is observed as a national holiday. This year the holiday will be observed on January 16, 2016. He accomplished so much through his Christian beliefs, at such a young age! Famous Quotes By Martin Luther King, Jr. “There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love.” “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” “He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.” “The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.” Dr. King’s dream has certainly come true in many ways. President Obama was the first African American president in U.S. history. The Civil Rights Movement definitely helped the progression of African American's rights in America. Using public demonstrations, rallies, boycotts and freedom rides, African Americans gained the right to ride on the same public transportation, eat at the same restaurants, and go to the same schools as others. Most importantly, the barriers to voting was removed. The dream continues to come true. Notes from the Executive Director: Martin Blaney 2016 was quite a year. We made it through a painful election. We lost a lot of friends: Ali, David Bowie and Prince and John Glenn, who was a hero to old guys like me. But, we also accomplished a lot at the Authority. We finally got our Trent Court playground; two Leadership Academies; and, successful Trent Court health fairs. We made solid improvements to New Bern Towers and raised our HUD score at both New Bern Towers and Trent Court. Let’s keep this going. I’m sure new Trent Court roofs will be appreciated by all. Oh, and by the way, HUD’s no-smoking ban will not be implemented until well into 2018. We got time to quit! Don’t put it off. A big thank you to the residents of Trent Court and New Bern Towers and our great staff! AND, let’s have a fantastic 2017!!
