The lava flows show a continuous strip along the major rivers, covering an area of approximately 400km2. There are 35 Quaternary volcanoes, and the latest eruption is dated about 2,000 years ago. This field trip will take you into a vast, fantastic natural museum of volcanic field with a 30 July-3 August, 2016, Changchun, China 3 The 6th International Maar Conference http://imc.csp.escience.cn/ great variety of landforms, structures, typical volcanic rocks and sediments produced by volcanic eruptions. The major stops of the trip include volcanic base surge accumulation profiles, lava pitfall, ragged scoriaceous lava landscape, cater lakes, tumuli, gorges of blocky volcanic rocks, basaltic mountain with columnar jointing, and a close view of a caldera produced by vigorous eruption of recent geologic time. The region has been established as a National Geopark in 2004. Empirically the range of temperature is 10-22 C. Items: Umbrella or raincoat. Maximum altitude: about 1332m. Working distance: This trip route is really smooth except about 30 minutes hiking to the Lake Tuofengling. Cancellation: When the number of participants is less than 8, this field trip route will be cancelled. Intra-conference Field Trip Longgang Volcanic Field: Quaternary Volcanoes and Maar Lakes Time: 2 August, 2016 (Tuesday) Assembling place: Changchun City Dissolution place: Changchun City Vehicle: Bus Chief guider: Prof. Jiaqi Liu and Prof. Guoqiang Chu (Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS) Registration fee: Free In the field excursion, participants will travel across the Longgang Volcanic Field (LVF). The LVF covers an area of 1700 km2 with more than 160 Quaternary craters and calderas. In the area, basement complex (the Archeozoic Migmatite Group) is believed to be a part of the North China Craton formed about 2,500 million years ago. The basement rocks are mainly migmatitic gneiss, migmatitic granite and leptynite. Volcanic activity began in the area about 2.1 million years ago when trachybasalt lava flows covered this area. It suggested that the region was under the most recent encroachment by the West Pacific Plate. Phreatomagmatic eruptions burst into activity starting 1.23 million years ago. The volcanic activity continued until approximately several hundred years ago. Several types of volcanic eruptions such as basaltic flood eruption and explosive eruption (Phreatomagmatic, Strombolian and Plinian) can be observed in the LVF. One of the most distinguishing features of the region is phreatomagmatic eruptions and maar lakes. There are ten maar lakes with surface area ranging from 0.1 km2 to 1.0 km2, and maximum water depth from 0.2 m to 127 m. The distribution of maar lakes is along north-east direction that could be controlled by a north-east lithospheric–scale fault. Maar lake has been recognized as an ideal document for the preservation of paleoclimatic archives because of their close morphology, relatively simple hydrological system, annually laminated sediment and a variety of proxy records in the sediment. Maar lakes in the LVF have been the subjects of numerous studies focused on reconstructing paleoclimatic changes at high resolution. In 1998, a joint Chinese-German Maar Drilling Program has been launched to reconstruct high-resolution (decadal to annual) paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes. A series of sediment cores (frozen, gravity and piston cores) have been recovered from maar lakes (Sihailongwan, Xiaolongwan, Dalongwan, etc) since 1998. Many valuable achievements have been 30 July-3 August, 2016, Changchun, China 5 The 6th International Maar Conference http://imc.csp.escience.cn/ harvested for understanding the regional climatic response to external forcings and anthropogenic influences in this data-sparse area. The main viewing sites will focus on Maar Lake Dalongwan, pyroclastic phreatomagmatic sequence, lava tree moulds, Jinglongdingzi Tephra and Maar Lake Sihailongwan . Notes: Weather: The local weather is a little hot during the meeting trip; normally, T-shirt is a suitably suggestive choice. Empirically the range of temperature is 19-26 C. Items: Umbrella or raincoat. Maximum altitude: about 1000m. Working distance: This trip route is really smooth with no requirements for long road on foot. Dalongwan maar lake Post-conference Field Trip Changbai Volcanic Field: Huge Volcano and Volcanology Time: 4-7 August, 2016 (4 days, 3 nights, Thursday to Sunday) Assembling place: Changchun City Dissolution place: Changchun City Vehicle: Bus Chief guider: Prof. Zhengfu Guo (Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS) Registration fee: 500/600 US dollars The Changbai Volcano is a significantly active stratovolcano straddling the border between China and North Korea. Its strongest eruption in the historical record occurred in about 1000 years ago, which is thought to release near100 km3 rhyolitic tephra (Fig. 1). The latest eruption occur in 1903 AD. The semi-continuous sequences of the volcanic activities range in age from Early Pleistocene to the present (i.e. 1903 AD). On the basis of the temporal-spatial characteristics of the volcanic activities, we may widely sub-divide the eruption products into following three stages: (1) early-stage basalts (2.77–1.20 Ma) outcropped in the underlying shield of the volcanic platform (Fig. 2), (2) mid-stage trachytes (1.12–0.04 Ma) composed of main body of the volcanic cone and (3) late-stage 30 July-3 August, 2016, Changchun, China 6 The 6th International Maar Conference http://imc.csp.escience.cn/ alkaline rhyolites (Holocene–the present) covered on the top of the cone and its neighboring areas. The giant caldera of the Changbai Volcano (Fig. 1), which was mainly filled by rainwater, resulted from the explosive eruptions of the trachytic and alkaline rhyolitic magmas, forming the Heaven Lake with 204 m in depth of the water (in average) and ~5 km in diameter. The four-day trip in the Changbai Volcanic Field will dominantly include observations of the stratovolcanic eruption sequences, crater lake, volcanic ash layer, lava flow, pyroclastic deposits, volcanic lahar, hot springs and a close view of natural scene of the Changbai Volcano in summer. Fig. 1 The Heaven Lake on top of the Changbaishan volcano Fig. 2 Outcrop of the shield basalt in Manjiang, northern part of the volcanic field 30 July-3 August, 2016, Changchun, China 7 The 6th International Maar Conference http://imc.csp.escience.cn/ Participants will mainly visit the volcanic geomorphological landscape, the volcanic products and the types of their accumulation from the Baiyun (White Cloud) Peak to the Tianwen (Astronomy) Peak along the north slope of the Changbai Volcano, and investigate the features of the volcanic activity in different periods. You will also observe the whole aspect of the Changbai Volcano, and have a complete concept on its geologic features and regularity of volcanic activity. Notes: Weather: The local weather is a little cool during the meeting trip; normally, T-shirt is suitable and jacket is a suitably suggestive choice for the top of the mountain. Empirically the range of temperature is 15-25 C. Items: Umbrella or raincoat. Maximum altitude: about 2691m. Working distance: This trip route is really smooth with no requirements for long road on foot. Cancellation: When the number of participants is less than 8, this field trip route will be cancelled.
