Potential Credits:

Note:
You may not choose to complete this project if you chose to do Question 3c of Unit 4.2 Practice.
Project Goals:
 to demonstrate your understanding of the lytic cycle including:
o attachment
o entry
o replication
o assembly
o release
Instructions:
 Please read through the Unit 4 Lesson, Structure of Viruses, paying particular attention to
the lytic cycle.
 Please chose one of the activities below to creatively demonstrate your understanding of
the lytic cycle.
o Option 1: Play-Mation
Using Play Dough, a smartphone or camera, and a computer program, create a PlayMation of the lytic cycle. The Play-Mation must be accompanied by a written or
an oral narration that clearly describes each step. The narration could be included
during the “filming” procedure or added in during the “editing” procedure with the
computer program.
o Option 2: Flip-book “Film”
Create a flip-book “film” of the lytic cycle. The “film” must be accompanied by a
written narration that clearly describes the name and key details of each step.
o Option 3: Write a story
Page 1 of 3 BIO 11 UNIT 04: Viruses
BCLN – Rev. June, 2015
Write a story that explains the lytic cycle. This story could be a romance gone
wrong, a horror story, a sci-fi story or some other appropriate genre. While the
story should be an analogy for the lytic cycle each step and the key details of each
step should be clearly covered. In other words, do not make the story so vague or
abstract that the scientific content is lost. For example if a pirate is representing the
virus then this should be clearly indicated in the story such as, "Captain Blackdeath
(virus) relentlessly targeted ships (cells) that were known to be carrying cargo for
the wealthy Spanish conquistadors (attachment, specific receptors)."
o Option 4: Write a comic strip
Write a comic strip that explains the lytic cycle. This comic should have creative
characters that represent a virus and a host. The comic should be an analogy for
the lytic cycle and each step and the key details of each step should be clearly
covered. In other words do not make the comic so vague or abstract that the
scientific content is lost. The comic should be accompanied by a caption that clearly
depicts what characters and events represent what components of the lytic cycle.
o Option 5: Your own idea
Must be creative. The idea must include all steps and clearly explain the key details
of each step. You should pass your creative idea by your teacher before you
proceed to make sure that it can appropriately demonstrate your knowledge of the
lytic cycle.
