May: 31 Days to Learn and Lead for Lupus

April 25, 2016
May: 31 Days to Learn and Lead for Lupus May has been celebrated for centuries by such illustrious poets as Shakespeare and Milton. But the month
has special meaning for the lupus community nationwide as the time to draw attention to a disease that
remains under-recognized and under-treated. The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and Lupus Research Institute offer opportunities throughout the month to learn
about lupus and lead the lupus community by joining local awareness and fundraising activities.
Join Campaign to Fight Lupus Among Hispanics The Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) is launching a national educational campaign to raise
awareness of lupus among this community. The campaign is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health to the Lupus Research Institute. The program
reaches millions of Spanish speakers through HCN’s national radio affiliate network La Red Hispana,
campaign website SobreLupus and social media. Tweet Your Questions About Lupus -- Join HCN’s Live Twitter Chat @SaludToday April 26 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time/ 10:00 – 11:00 AM Pacific Time

Support Innovative Research Driving Results!
Major breakthroughs in lupus research confirm worldleading funders LRI and the ALR have been on the right
track! Results of a landmark study partially funded by
ALR and published by LRI’s Scientific Advisory Board
member Dr. Virginia Pascual may dramatically improve
lupus drug development and pave the way for
personalized treatment of the disease. Click here to
read the press release from Baylor Institute for
Immunology Research where Dr. Pascual serves as
Director of the Center for Inflammation and Autoimmune
Diseases as well as the Center for Personalized
Medicine, The study was recently published in Cell, a
highly prestigious scientific journal among biologists.
“The results included in this paper provide an explanation for why clinical trials fail in lupus, and opens the
door for true personalized approaches to drug discovery and treatment in this disease,” Dr. Pascual said.
May Proclaimed Lupus Awareness Month in New York City and New York State
Thank you Mayor Bill de Blasio for declaring May “Lupus
Awareness Month” in the City of New York. The
Proclamation recognizes the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation as
“the voice for New Yorkers with lupus since 1970.”
As part of the Lupus Agencies of New York State, the
S.L.E. Lupus Foundation goes to Albany May 18 when
Lupus Awareness Month will be proclaimed in New York
State. We will also urge legislators to pass key bills that
support lupus research and eliminate barriers to
advances in healthcare. Thank you to Tiffany Peterson
for traveling to Albany as our 2016 Patient
Representative!
Lupus organizations across the country are urging their
government officials to recognize May as lupus
awareness month. Google “Lupus Awareness Month”
and your state or city to see if May is recognized in your
area. If not, take the lead to write your governor or mayor
to voice this request on behalf of the lupus community!
