What is Raymarine’s CHIRP DownVision™
Sonar Technology?
The acronym CHIRP actually stands for Compressed High
Intensity Radar Pulse; however we are using this advanced
technology with sonar to give fishermen high resolution
underwater imagery. Unlike conventional sonars that transmit
a single frequency with each pulse, Dragonfly’s CHIRP sonar
transmits across a wide spectrum of sonar frequencies
simultaneously with each pulse. The result of this wide spectrum
pulse is much higher-resolution and life-like sonar images.
Dragonfly sonars use CHIRP for both DownVision sonar imaging
of underwater objects and conventional sonar mode for
targeting fish.
Why would I use the Dragonfly?
Simply put – to catch more fish! Dragonfly® sonars are used by
boaters to locate fish and their habitat. Dragonfly’s DownVision
sonars give fishermen a clear photo like image of underwater
objects and fish targets. Fish often frequent underwater
structure to search for food so locating underwater objects like
wrecks and submerged trees helps fisherman zero in on fish.
What is the price point of the new Dragonfly models?
There are several models in the Dragonfly product line to fit
every fisherman’s budget and individual requirements. The
base model, the Dragonfly 4DV (The DV denotes DownVision)
starts at $199.99 USD. Anglers looking to step up to enhanced
fish identification can choose the 4.3” Dragonfly 4 DVS or
the 5” Dragonfly 5 DVS. The “DVS” models feature CHIRP
DownVision™ plus a second conventional CHIRP sonar channel,
optimized for locating fish targets.
Moving up from the DVS models are the Dragonfly 4 PRO
and Dragonfly 5 PRO. Dragonfly PRO models combine CHIRP
DownVision and conventional CHIRP sonar with a fast 10Hz GPS
for staying on course and internal Wi-Fi for streaming to mobile
devices.
In addition to the Dragonfly 4 and 5 models, the new Wi-Fish™
sonar for mobile devices joins the Dragonfly range. Built on the
Dragonfly sonar platform, Wi-Fish is a black box wireless sonar
designed to work exclusively with smartphones and tablets,
letting fisherman access CHIRP DownVision from anywhere on
board. Using Raymarine’s Wi-Fish mobile app, fishermen can
view, pause, and rewind sonar imagery. Wi-Fish makes it easy to
record your favorite fishing spots and share with friends online.
How can I buy one?
Dragonfly will be available through our network of authorized
marine and outdoor specialty retailers.

When will the new Dragonfly models ship? What is the
launch date?
The new models make their debut at CES on January 8th and
will make their boating industry debut at the Toronto and London
boat shows on January 9th. The new models will be available in
the end of February.
I’m a new boater, how easy is it to operate and interpret
the images?
With CHIRP DownVision technology interpreting the sonar
image is much easier than reading conventional sonars because
the sonar is fully automatic and does not require any user
adjustment. Much like the way digital cameras and phones
automatically focus the image for a beautiful picture, Dragonfly
sonar automatically adjusts the sonar setting for optimal image
quality.
What size boat is ideal for the Dragonfly 4 & 5?
We expect the new Dragonfly 4 and 5 models to be used on
power fishing boats below 25’ typically. Boats like bass boats
for lakes and rivers and bay boats for coastal saltwater will be
the typical Dragonfly 4 and 5 applications. With its compact size,
waterproof construction, and low power consumption we also
expect kayak fishermen to adopt the new Dragonfly line up.
Which mobile platforms are Dragonfly PRO and
Wi-Fish compatible with?
The Wi-Fish mobile app is compatible with i0S 7 or higher and
Android 4 or higher. The app is compatible with both smartphone
and tablets.
What is the Wi-Fish mobile app?
The Wi-Fish mobile app lets fishermen stream sonar images
right to their smart phone or tablet from the Wi-Fish black box
sonar or from any Dragonfly PRO model. The app connects via
Wi-Fi and receives real-time sonar imagery, letting fisherman
access their sonar from anywhere on board. The Wi-Fish app
also lets fishermen pause and rewind the sonar stream for
saving and sharing with friends online.
