Golf A top-ranked West Virginia golf destination Cobb Course Cobb, Hole #5 Cobb, Hole #11 Cobb, Hole #17 Cobb Course is the only course created by George Cobb that bears his name. It’s a timeless masterpiece featuring rolling hills, ponds and massive greens and a lot of movement from hole to hole. The Cobb Course, built in 1972 by renowned architect George Cobb, is a classic-style course that is the only course to bear his name. Cobb is particularly noted as the design consultant to Augusta National for 20 years, and is also the designer of Augusta National’s famous Par 3 Course. Cobb was the designer of other great courses, such as Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., which hosts the annual Wachovia Championship on the PGA tour. This timeless masterpiece, a par 72, stretches over 7,100 yards and features rolling hills, ponds and massive greens, strategically placed bunkers, and a lot of movement from hole to hole. Holes that move from right to left and from left to right are equal in number. It is an excellent shot maker’s course that tests the best golfers and a uniquely playable course for those mid-to high-handicappers. One of the Cobb Course’s most outstanding holes is No. 16. This 420-yard par 4 is the first of three great finishing holes and forces the golfer to carry water three different times, twice off the tee, and on the second shot to a well bunkered green. This is a hole that is very influential in the many tournaments that The Resort at Glade Springs hosts. The aesthetics of this course set it apart from any other on the east coast. Stonehaven Course, a modern track, open to resort guests, is built on a mountain venue boasting some of the most spectacular holes in West Virginia with elevation changes up to 80-feet per hole and the greatest variety of Par 3’s and 5’s anywhere on the east coast. The aesthetics of rock walls, man-made outcroppings and lush, year-round Bentgrass green carpet are impressive, but it is the course’s long bunkers and treacherous hazards that will truly test a golfer’s game. Stonehaven’s No. 16 is a true par 5, 601 yards in length, and has players starting the hole on top of the world, with an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding West Virginia mountains that distracts golfers from focusing on their games. An elevated tee shot down to the fairway must avoid a larger bunker, giving players little option to go for it. A long iron, hybrid, or fairway wood leaves a short iron to a well-guarded green. After holing out, make sure you look back down the hole before you proceed to No. 17, taking a minute to appreciate both the beauty and the challenge. This course plays 7,122 yards from the longest of five sets of tees with Bentgrass fairways open to generous-sized Bentgrass greens. Woodhaven meanders under a canopy of towering oak, maple, beech and hickory that’s accented by an underwood of colorful rhododendrons. Man-made rock walls, outcropping and natural rock gardens highlighted with wild flowers add to the beauty and challenge of Woodhaven. Golfers can test their game on two strikingly different ninehole loops. Holes one through nine run through a much steeper valley offering mountain vistas along many turns in the cart path. The back nine plays up and down through a series of valleys that overlook Glade Creek Gorge. But wait, you’re not done yet! The Par 5 18th hole, measuring 552 yards, tests all caliber of golfers from tee to green. It features a perennial stream, rock outcropping bunkers, and trees to be negotiated as the golfer finally lands on a moderately to severely contoured surface. This hole could bring you back for another day or rush you to the 19th hole for a libation. Tom Clark, whose best-known course is TPC at Avenel, site of numerous PGA tournaments, is the designer of Woodhaven.
