April 13th 2017 CARMEL COLLEGE Act justly, love tenderly, walk humbly with your God – Micah 6:8 PO Box 31142 Milford 0741, 114 Shakespeare Road, Milford, Auckland 0620 • PH: 09 486 1132 • FAX: 09 486 2286 • [email protected] • www.carmel.school.nz FROM THE PRINCIPAL Tena koutou katoa. Nga mihi nui atawhai. In Holy Week there is a focus on the Crucifixion of Jesus. Megan McKenna in her book The New Stations of the Cross: The Way of the Cross According to Scripture describes The Thirteenth Station: JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS. ‘Jesus dies with a loud cry. There is a book called Cry of Jesus, Cry of the Oppressed, by José Comblin that speaks about that cry. What is that cry? What does it reveal? What does it scream into the very air of the universe? Following is a piece that takes ideas from that book plus from many communities’ prayers in South America in the decades since the 1980s, in trying to say what the cry is and what happens when you hear it and it pierces your soul and wounds you in your heart. Then Jesus cries out. It is a cry of freedom. A cry of hope. A cry of handing over. It is a cry of giving back. Giving back all his work, his dreams, his love, life, breath, spirit. It is a cry of pain and agony. It is a cry of resistance to evil. It is a cry against violence and death. It is a cry that rends the curtain of the temple in two, and tears the light out of the day and throws him clear of hate. It is a cry that throws him into the arms of Mercy. It is his death cry and it is the beginning of resurrection. That cry tears loose anything that holds back God or the kingdom of God from coming among us. It is a cry for the poor, for those who struggle for justice and for those who hang on for a dearer life, for those who hunger and thirst for God’s reign, now, in history. It is a cry for an alternative tolove injustice, despair inhumanity. Act justly, tenderly, to walk humbly and with your God – Micah 6:8 A cry that creates a new world like the original one was intended. It is a cry of judgment and nothing will ever be the same again. It is the cry of all human beings caught in death, caught in a world turning on itself and eating each other alive. It is a cry layered and fraught with meaning. It is a cry of prayer to God for justice, for security, for defense and for faithfulness that will not be undone by others’ hate and persecution. It is a cry of anguish for all that was lost, for all that life that was torn to shreds, all that life denied to others, all that hope cast away. All that life that was buried under greed. All that life that was never allowed to blossom, to grow, to thrive and generate new life. It is the Cry of Mercy being poured out and Mercy being caught up into the arms of the Father. CARMEL COLLEGE It is the Cry of God when we don’t see Him. McKenna ends with this prayer: Father, we love the life you have given to us and share with us ever more deeply in Jesus the Lord. May we honour all life and handle it carefully. May we pray daily with Jesus the intention of giving back to you all that you have given to us, our very selves and our life. Father, into your hands I give my spirit. Take us, Oh loving Father, all of us, and hold us to your heart. Amen. Wishing each and every one of you a blessed Easter. Young Vinnies Easter Egg Collection Stations of the Cross The annual Carmel Rosmini Stations of the Cross held on Wednesday night was a very reverent occasion and gave those who were present a sacred pause in Holy Week. Thank you to the musicians, choirs, actresses, readers, students and staff who made this possible. This term, Young Vinnies held a collection of easter eggs for 23 children and 13 adults currently at De Paul house. We had an overwhelming response with boxes filled to the brim with a variety of easter eggs thanks to the incredibly generous staff, students and family of Carmel College. [email protected] or on 0224254197 Year 8 Rocky Shore Visit Last week four Year 8 classes visited the Rocky Shore as part of their Science studies. This was an opportunity of the girls to put their learning into action. We looked at the plants and animals that were found in the different parts of the Rocky Shore, investigated the adaptations those plants and animals had to survive in their habitats and looked at the impact humans had on the marine life of the Rocky Shore. Comments from the girls included …. “Going to the rocky shore helped me to experience and see the different species and zones that we had talked about in class time. It made the topic more interesting to learn and it also enriched my understanding of our unique marine life.” “It helped me to be able to identify organisms and I learnt about some of their structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations. It helped me to understand how the tides worked better. I am able to now identify where some of the organism’s habitats are and why they live there. What the advantages and disadvantages are. How they move and why they move.” NOEL LEEMING FRIENDS & FAMILY FUND RAISING EVENT DEAR FRIENDS & FAMILY OF OUR SCHOOL With support from Noel Leeming, we are running a Friends & Family Fund Raising event from Monday 8th to Sunday 14th May.
