1. Introduction – the Siemens OTT SWIPE™ end-to-end platform
Now, the most outstanding User Experience (UX) feature of the Siemens OTT SWIPETM end-to-end platform is
also available for already deployed OTT and IPTV video systems.
The Siemens OTT SWIPETM end-to end platform delivers video and TV on basically any existing state-of-the-art
device. The Siemens OTT SWIPETM platform not only supports a huge variety of device types, such as
smartphones, tablets, Connected TVs, Media Player Boxes, game consoles and PC/Mac but also covers a huge
variety of state-of-the-art functionalities to assure a truly unique multi-screen OTT experience.
Picture 1: Siemens OTT SWIPETM – Multi-screen Support for OTT platforms
The Siemens OTT SWIPETM platform wins over customers all around the globe by a broad support of devices, a
powerful Business Management System, integration of Multi DRM solutions and professional scaling.
However, the most outstanding feature of the Siemens OTT SWIPE TM end-to-end product is the SWIPETM
User Experience.
The SWIPE Experience is a unique cross-device experience feature which lets users connect their different
devices, such as smartphones and TV sets or tablets and game consoles, to smoothly move content from one
device to another by a simple Swipe gesture. This way of sharing content between devices – regardless of
manufacturers – is a unique and patented technology of the Siemens.
Siemens OTT SWIPETM UX as a Service is available now and brings the unique OTT SWIPETM User Experience
even to already deployed IPTV and OTT platforms.
Siemens OTT SWIPETM UX as a Service allows platform operators to add the desired Swipe functionality to an
existing video service. Systems, workflows and User Interfaces already in place can still be used the way they are.
The existing OTT or IPTV platform can be extended easily by connecting the customers’ backends and Apps to the
OTT SWIPETM Server via APIs. All the end-users need to do is a simple update of their mobile and SmartTV apps to
enjoy the enhanced OTT SWIPETM User Experience.
You can easily integrate the Swipe functionality into existing configurations. This is ensured by standard APIs and
SDKs (Software Development Kits) provided by Siemens, as well as clearly outlined step-by-step instructions and
documentation to support your development teams. Thanks to cloud-based OTT SWIPETM Servers, the new
functionality can be launched within a very short time. An easy consumption-based cost model, combined with a
regular monthly fee ensures easy-to-understand invoices.
2. OTT SWIPETM product highlights

3. OTT SWIPETM UX – The User Experience
The OTT SWIPE™ UX is a unique multi-screen User Experience (UX) feature. It allows users to intuitively swipe
content from one screen to another. It is a breakthrough technology for remote navigation and 2nd-screen
services. The implementation of the Swipe gesture in an existing App takes the navigation logic of the App into
consideration.
3.1 OTT SWIPETM - Siemens’ User Experience Philosophy
Today, IPTV and OTT platforms deliver video and Linear-TV to smartphones, tablet computers, connected TVs,
media player boxes, game consoles and media centers of all major manufactures. End-users can watch the IPTV
and OTT TV Services such as linear-TV and video on demand on their personal devices connected to the Internet.
However, end-users expect an optimized User Experience not only on a specific device. They demand a smooth
content and end-user interaction between different devices – regardless of manufacturers - anytime and
anywhere. And Siemens OTT SWIPE™ delivers just that!
Siemens operates a dedicated Device and User Experience department on the edge of new technology that
evaluates new device platforms, UX-trends and standards. The Siemens User Experience Team is supported by
professional designers, who steadily improve usability for devices and Apps by constantly tackling advanced
graphical and technological capabilities of new device platforms.
A successful platform should offer an experience that is not limited to one specific device or is even artificially
trimmed down to a set of functionalities. A good multi-screen user experience should enable a flexible swipe of
content from one device to another. It should also use the inherent capabilities of each device it is running on.
End-users should be able to navigate through their content intuitively with no artificial borders. Devices should
be automatically recognized inside a room and content should be moved easily among them. This detail is crucial
and makes a world of difference to the end user.
This unique experience is available through Siemens’ OTT SWIPETM.
3.2 The OTT SWIPETM Experience
The OTT SWIPETM Experience is a unique User Experience that lets end-users connect their different devices to
smoothly swipe content from one device to another by a simple Swipe gesture. This way of sharing content
between devices – regardless of manufacturers – is unique and patent-protected. End-users can, for example,
navigate content on a tablet and then swipe it to a big screen for watching. Alternatively, end-users can pull
content from a big screen to a mobile handheld to take the content with them when leaving the room. Once
video repositories are provided via the customer’s backend and delivery entity, they are literally moved into the
Cloud, to the OTT SWIPETM Server. A unified user experience is very important for OTT providers, as it is not
necessary for the end-user to learn different navigation patterns when using different access devices. This
increases end-user satisfaction and, therefore, might also increase conversion rates and the global platform
success. Given the very short selection times, end-users will feel immediately at home on the VoD repository and
will navigate across all of their devices in the same way. With the increasing number of hand-held devices, this
benefit becomes ever more important.
Picture 3: Swiping up a movie from tablet to TV
Note that end-user devices do not need direct connection within the household. All devices are linked by the OTT
SWIPETM Server: a seamless end-user experience! The screen is optimized to aid the selection process with a
maximized amount of options displayed to the end user. As both end-user devices run Apps connecting them to
the same OTT SWIPETM Server, both devices can be connected easily and offer the desired browsing experience to
the end-user, making it possible to freely switch and swipe between devices.
3.2.1 Navigation and display devices
Siemens OTT SWIPETM as a Service distinguishes between two kinds of devices: navigation devices and display
devices. A device is called a navigation device if it is mainly used for navigating content, searching and reading to
decide what to watch. These devices - mobile handhelds, like smartphones and tablets - are able to play the
content but usually are not used for long viewing times due to their limited screen size. Display devices are
devices which are mostly used for lean-back watching and not for extended content navigation.
Display devices include Connected TVs and blue ray players, but also devices which extend a TV, such as HDMI
dongles or game consoles.
Picture 4: Example Display device with initial pairing code
Navigation devices can be paired with display devices to navigate content on one device and watch the content
on the other device. The major advantage of Siemens OTT SWIPETM compared to similar solutions is the
automatic pairing: after the initial manual pairing no further interaction is required by the user. The devices
automatically recognize each other. This even works if three or more devices are present in the same location.
This detail makes a world of difference in terms of convenience.
With the interconnection of one or more devices and the linking to an end-user’s account the possibilities for
improving the user experience are theoretically endless
3.2.2 Pairing and de-coupling
At the heart of the Siemens OTT SWIPETM User Experience is the Coupling Determination Engine. It determines if
an end-user device is available and if it can or should be coupled seamlessly to a Connected TV, Set-Top-Box,
blue-ray player, Dongle, game console or similar display device with internet connection. Once availability is
confirmed, the engine autonomously and automatically connects handheld devices and display device in order to
enable and disable the Swipe functionality.
Picture 5: Pairing code on display and navigation device
The Engine is a decision-making tool containing a set of algorithms determining whether or not to couple two
(or more) devices. Thus, the Engine will decide upon the end-user view on the devices (e.g. no. of items
displayed) and the options available to the end-user. The Engine governs the behavior of all devices in the loose
coupling scenario. It can initiate or validate a pairing or de-pairing of the devices involved.
3.2.3 Remote-Control Functionality
Connecting two devices offers a lot of new options for improving the User Experience. While the content is
shown on one device, the second screen is freed to grant access to navigation, cross promotion and also remotecontrol functionalities. The remote-control functionality allows controlling the player on the display screen. In
addition to pause and skip, start-over and volume controls, also channel switching for Live TV can be made
accessible via the remote control functionality.
The OTT SWIPE™ SDK and API provide all the necessary calls to add remote-control functionalities to the end-user
Apps.
3.3 Patent protection
The Siemens OTT SWIPETM solution, the Siemens OTT SWIPETM Hand-Over Management (Swipe), and the Siemens
OTT SWIPETM Coupling Determination System are unique to the market. They are protected by patents/patents
pending and can therefore not be offered by other vendors.
4. Integration of OTT SWIPETM UX as a Service
Implementation of OTT SWIPETM UX to already deployed video platforms is very easy. There is no need to invest
in new hardware – neither for the platform operator, nor for the end-user. In addition, there is no need to create
new User Interfaces or to create completely new Apps for end-users. The Swipe functionality can be easily added
without changing workflows or User Interfaces already in place. When adding OTT SWIPE™ UX to your Apps and
platform the only thing to do is to update the App the end-users have already downloaded.
The OTT SWIPE™ Server offers well documented web services in order to connect customers’ OTT/IPTV systems to
the OTT SWIPE™ Server. Additionally, easy-to-use SDKs for the major platforms to add the Swipe functionality to
end-user applications will be provided. Software development kits for iOS and Android devices as well as for
Samsung and LG Connected TVs are included in the license fee. Swipe commands and interfaces to the OTT
SWIPE™ Server are already delivered in an encapsulated and documented library package of the SDKs provided.
The customers’ video backend, Connected TVs, Set-Top-Boxes or HDMI sticks can be connected via the integrated
API, which is based on standard API technology. Customers who use this API can easily connect every supported
device to the OTT SWIPETM Server and use the full functionality even on several legacy devices.
The documented SDKs and open APIs allow fast integration of OTT SWIPETM into existing IPTV and OTT
deployments and make integration of SWIPE to existing video services a matter of a few weeks. All the necessary
documentation will be made available during the ordering process of Siemens OTT SWIPETM UX as a Service. Only
a very short time is needed for successful integration and launch of Swipe in any existing OTT or IPTV system.
For further information regarding the integration of OTT SWIPETM UX as a Service, please refer to the Technical
Service Description and the provided API and SDK documentations.
