Foreshadowing: Clues in the text about what is going to happen later on in the plot. Inference: Educated guess. You make an assumption about something you don’t know based on information you do know. Directions: Read the following examples of foreshadowing, and then make a prediction or inference based on each clue. Number 1 is done for you as an example. 1. Jonas asks Larissa what happens when the Old are released. Larissa replies that no one knows except the committee. The committee wants to maintain as much control over the community as possible by holding onto most of the information. 2. Jonas' father says that all of his friends were happy with their Assignments. 3. Jonas has volunteered in many different places. 4. Jonas, Gabriel, and a female Five each have different, lighter eyes. 5. Asher has no serious interests, but Jonas's father says that the Elders will find exactly the right Assignment for the fun-loving Asher. 6. Jonas alone notices that an apple "changed" mid-air. 7. Jonas, his family, and even Lily joke about sending requests for rule changes to the committee for study. 8. Jonas has a vivid dream about Fiona. 9. Each family member, including Lily, is required to sign a pledge to not become attached to Gabriel. 10. Jonas and his groupmates exchange frightening tales about those who join other communities or are released.
