Describing the basic elements of stories —
such as characters, events, and settings — by
drawing on specific details in the text
Paying close attention to key features of
informational books and articles: these
include understanding the main and
supporting ideas; being able to compare and
contrast information; and explaining how the
author uses facts, details, and evidence to
support particular points
Comparing ideas, characters, events, and
settings in stories and myths from different
cultures
Writing summaries or opinions about topics
supported with a set of well-organized facts,
details, and examples
Independently conducting short research
projects on different aspects of a topic using
evidence from books and the Internet
Reporting orally on a topic or telling a story
with enough facts and details
Writing complete sentences with correct
capitalization and spelling
Relating words that are common in reading
to words with similar meanings (synonyms)
and to their opposites (antonyms)
Science
 Use the scientific inquiry process to answer
questions
 Observe and apply the basic properties of
electricity

Use the four operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division) to solve problems
including whole numbers, fractions and
decimals.
Pull numbers apart into their factors and
multiples and understand patterns in numbers.
Read, write and name whole numbers through
the millions place.
Compare and order whole numbers, fractions
and decimals.
Estimate, measure, and change customary and
metric units of length, weight/mass, and
capacity.
Use conversions of time measurement to solve
problems.
Understand how different types of graphs can
communicate information.
Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify
shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Determine the difference between perimeter
and area and know when to apply them.
Social Studies
 Read any map to find landforms,
latitude/longitude lines, and regions of the
United States.
 Read and discuss people, events, and
customs that helped shape United States
history and culture.
 Know and explain the different types of
resources in each region and how they
influence the economy.
 Understand the three different branches of
government.
 Explain the role of a citizen in the United
States including rights and responsibilities.
