Education, interests and reason for being a governor:
Sue Powell
My home has always been in Croydon and I attended primary and secondary schools in Croydon before going
to college in Devon. When I qualified as a teacher I came back to spend my teaching career in Croydon, including
over 20 years as a headteacher. I then worked for seven years as a School Improvement Consultant in Surrey.
Since retirement I have become a school governor, as I wanted to continue to use my experience and love of
learning in a voluntary role. I was pleased to be invited to become a Local Authority governor at Wolsey Infant
and Nursery School.
I learnt to play the piano and clarinet when I was at school, and have for many years enjoyed singing in a
number of different choirs. I enjoy listening to music and enjoy going to concerts and the theatre.
Employment: Company Director, Dupont Latour (Catering facilities design) Runs gymnastics club for children
Qualifications: : Diploma in Hotel Management
Education, interests and reason for being a governor:
Marcel Rizza
I was educated in France in the 70's, education was very different then. Today, I manage a small business
and without good education, on-going learning with further education courses and care from amazing
teachers I would not have achieved as much. It is my time to care about improving children's education for
their future and the future of our economy. As a small business based in Purley, Surrey, I would like to
contribute to my local community and schools. I believe that excellent results comes with hard work,
recognition, sharing other people success, be part of a team and valuing the contribution made by other
people. I have no knowledge of being a Governor but very keen to learn, I assume that some training maybe
available and by asking questions and sharing my experience my contribution maybe of some value to a local
school.
Employment: Retired, previously University of Reading, Equality and Diversity Professional
Qualifications: BA degree (Law)
Education, interests and reason for being a governor:
Dennis Bartholomew
My own experience has shown the importance of education to human development. The person I became was
due to the commitment shown by the teaching staff, officers of ILEA and the volunteers, whose name I
never got to find out. Being a person from the Caribbean, I became interested in the impact of education
on communities with poor access to resources. I became aware of social issues and sought to contribute
towards change by forming a number of voluntary organisations and informal groups. For several years I was
the chair of a community and youth organization in Lambeth and for a while I was also the chair of a mental
health charity. Following my qualification in law I held a number of posts and for several years I pursued
the role of an equality and diversity professional, firstly in the voluntary sector then local government and
finally in a higher education setting.
Employment: Finance Analyst in Beauty
Qualifications: : BA (Hons) Degree Accountancy and Finance
Education, interests and reason for being a governor:
Natasha McKenzie
My mother was always very pro-education and urged my sisters and I to do well at school, including a
stint at home schooling each and every one of us at some point throughout our early years. I very nearly
became a teacher myself but the call to Accountancy pipped my career decision at the last minute, very
probably because all my teachers were directing me towards teaching! However I am very interested in
education, and the effect it can have on your life as an individual and the opportunities it can provide. I also
love children- I marvel at what we as adults can learn from them…and often have a house filled with other
people’s children during the holidays and weekends. I strongly believe that every child deserves the chance
to achieve his/her greatest potential , that learning should be fun and varied– a motto that is mirrored by
Wolsey I & N mission statement and to that end I as a parent am thrilled that my children have a had a chance
to sample the excellent opportunities that Wolsey provides. If I can use my professional, personal and life
experiences skills succeed to help my community grow, then I believe my goals as a Governor have been met.

I know New Addington extremely well as I lived here for over 10 years. I have two children and both of them
attended Wolsey Infants and Nursery. I am very passionate about ensuring our children receive the best

Rebecca Burgin
Employment: Teacher at an All Boys’ Secondary Academy
Qualifications: Doctorate in Education
Education, interests and reason for being a governor:
I am a teacher at an all boys' secondary academy in Southwark, although I have an interest in all aspects and
phases of the UK education system. Before starting my teacher training, I was a research student for 5 years; I
taught and lectured undergraduate students in medieval history. My move into secondary school teaching
presented quite a different challenge - teaching maths to teenagers!
Ben Vertannes
I was recruited into the teaching profession through Teach First and I am keen to draw on all available
experiences in order to learn more about the challenges that schools face in providing outstanding education
to young people across south London. I am passionate about working to ensure that no child's progress is
limited by economic background or any learning need. I recently completed a short research project for the
Department for Education on teacher recruitment in Early Years and the free childcare allowance.
In my spare time, I am a football referee and can often be seen around pitches in Southwark, Lewisham and
Croydon looking after both youth and adult matches.

Education, interests and reason for being a governor:

From a young age my parents taught me the importance of education and supported me in doing well through
school and then university. I was involved in youth organisations in my local community throughout this time
and then I moved to London and settled in Croydon. Over the last 10 years I have worked in various roles in
retail, most recently as a project manager. I am new to the role of Governor but I am passionate about learning
and want to use my own experiences both in education and at work to support a school in my local community.
