Y 6 Curriculum Information sheet

English focus:
Literacy sessions will take place every day.
Writing, including sentence construction and grammar, will be taught through a
variety of teaching sequences. There will be cross curricular links with our
Geography topic on Rivers and Mountains. Handwriting, SPAG and reading
comprehension will be further developed within discrete lessons.
Mathematics focus:
The children will be taught from the new National Curriculum 2014. This will
include the following areas: Number Place Value; Addition, Subtraction,
Multiplication and Division; Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Measurements;
Geometry-Shape and Position; Statistics; Ratio and Proportion; and Algebra.
Much of our work, after SATs will be investigative-based. In addition, children
will develop their mental arithmetic skills and formal written calculation
methods, applying these skills to the areas above. We will continue to have an
extra ‘20 Minute Maths’ session, twice weekly, focusing on arithmetic skills,
including instant recall of all multiplication facts.
Science focus:
After SATs, we will be undertaking a number of practical investigations,
focusing on how to interpret the results in order to draw conclusions. We will
also be researching the work of specific scientists and exploring ideas of
evolution. Further activities will be linked to our own environment area in school
and the Balcombe Wood Residential.
Cross-curricular focus/Topic:
The children will be set a quest to investigate aspects of Rivers and Mountains.
The quest has 10 challenges, incorporating Geography, Science, Art, Literacy,
ICT and Mathematics. Children will learn about the geography of rivers both
locally and around the world. Global links: World Rivers Study - The impact of
global warming on different communities around the world. The children will
research information and present learning in different ways, whilst developing
their independent learning skills.
P.E.: Please can children have their kit in school each day.
Dance: Children will be enjoying country dance routines. They will choreograph
routines and develop aesthetic movements; these will be shared during our
whole-school Dance Day, later on in the Summer Term.
Athletics: Children will be developing athletic skills leading up to Sports Day.
Games: Children will learn skills and tactics in order to play a range of Striking
and Fielding games.

incorporating imported sounds. Children will continue to learn about E-Safety.
