Rally for Hospice, Journey of our Past.
A Historic Road Rally and Memory Walk
We are excited to announce our 2017 Spring event; Rally for
Hospice, a Historical Road Rally and Memory Walk that will be
held Saturday, May 20th. Hospice of the Ozarks has partnered
with the Mountain Home EAST Initiative, Baxter County
Historic Society and local historian, Vincent Anderson at the
Donald W. Reynolds Library to take you on a historic journey
through Baxter and Marion counties. Drivers will take off from
the library between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. Participants will scan a
QR code that will link them to a short educational video, created by the Mountain
Home EAST students, and directions to the next stop. For those participants that
prefer their information less technical, there will be copies of the script available.
Throughout the journey participants will have a chance to win prizes at each stop,
get their “passport” stamped, and try to find answers for a scavenger hunt.
Participants who complete the scavenger hunt
and fill their passport will be entered into the
grand prize drawings. The Rally will end at
Cooper Park, where we will have a BBQ picnic
lunch and entertainment. The Baxter County
Historical Society will be opening up the Casey
House and Rapps Barren buildings for tours.
The Memory Walk will be open from 11:00 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. along the Rapps Barren trail.

Volunteer Appreciation Week
April 23rd—29th is National Volunteer Appreciation Week. In celebration, Hospice of
the Ozarks would like to recognize the men and women that give of their time and
energy to serve our organization. Our volunteers contributed over 10,100 hours
of their time in 2016. We want to say thank you and "shower them with our
appreciation" for all they do. Volunteers have been a vital part of our organization
since 1979 when Hospice of the Ozarks began as an all-volunteer group of
individuals to help meet the end-of-life needs of families in our community.
Today, volunteers remain an essential part of the services provided to our family,
friends and neighbors. The Volunteer Appreciation Lunch will be April 11th in the
BRMC Lagerborg Dining Room.
National Healthcare Decisions Day Lunch & Learn
You are invited to join us from 12:00—1:00 p.m. Friday, April 21st at the Donald W.
Reynolds Library for a Lunch & Learn. Donette Boyett, LCSW, Family Service
Coordinator for Hospice of the Ozarks will be presenting on the importance of
Advanced Directives. This Lunch and Learn is free and open to the community.

Spiritual Care
If you have ever considered being a spiritual volunteer with hospice, please call
and talk with Donette Boyett, Family Service Coordinator at 508-1771. She is
interested in talking with those who enjoy sharing quiet moments with patients
or their family members, reading poems or scriptures, saying a prayer, or simply
being present. We will provide training to those who are led to serve in this way.

What happens at the Hospice House?
As we celebrate the 11th year of service at
our Hospice House and 38 years as an
organization, we recognize there can be
myths and misconceptions developed over
time with respect to what qualifies a
person to spend time at the Hospice House.
We would like to make sure you know the truth, not a myth.
A big thank you to our friends at Harps for choosing
Hospice of the Ozarks as one of the beneficiaries for
the Harps Employee Golf Tournament.
Myth: Everyone who goes to the Hospice House dies there and the Hospice House is
only used in the final days of life.
Truth: Everyone who goes to the Hospice House must be a Hospice of the Ozarks
patient with a life expectancy of 6 months or less if the disease(s) should take its
natural course.
Nine out of ten people still prefer to be in their own home environment during their
end-of-life journey, but there are circumstances that could exist where a person may
need the care and support at the Hospice House.
Thank you Mountain Home VFW for the $500
gift from BINGO proceeds.
Hospice of the Ozarks presented to the
Mountain Home Lions Club in November, 2016.
Hospice of the Ozarks presented to the
Mountain Home Lady Elks in February, 2017.
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS
If you belong to a church, club or civic
organization, we would love to come and
share our message with you. It is our
ongoing mission to continue educating our
community on hospice care and how
beneficial it is to the patient and their family.
If you would like to schedule a presentation,
please contact
Angela Broome, Outreach & Development
Coordinator at 870-508-1754 or
[email protected].
Inpatient care: If a person’s symptom(s) cannot be successfully managed in their
home environment, then the patient may qualify for short-term Inpatient care, where
a skilled nurse, physician and other team members address the symptom(s).
Typically, this care will be 2-3 days (avg) and when the symptom is under control,
the patient returns to their previous living arrangement.
Respite care: If the patient’s primary caregiver needs time to rest due to exhaustion,
appointments, commitments, etc., the patient can come to the Hospice House for
respite care up to 5 consecutive calendar days. This allows the patient to continue
receiving support from the hospice team in an environment trained for end-of-life
care and allows the primary caregiver to have a time of respite.
Residential routine care: If the patient has exhausted all other living options, the
patient may consider renting a room at the Hospice House and receive routine
hospice care. There is never a charge for hospice care, which includes; services of
the physician, nurse, spiritual care, social work & emotional support, hospice aide,
allied therapists and volunteers, as well as medications related to the terminal
diagnosis, medical equipment and supplies. But if a person is renting a room, there
is a daily $ rate for the rent which includes the room, utilities, meals and amenities
of the Hospice House. Room availability must be determined daily due to patients
also receiving inpatient and respite care.
Myth: When people think about hospice care, they think the Hospice House only.
Truth: Hospice of the Ozarks can go anywhere the patient lives. The largest majority
of our patients are in Baxter and Marion counties in their own homes, residential care
facilities, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Hospice care is provided in
these living options as well as at the Hospice House for the above listed reasons.
Hospice of the Ozarks is celebrating 38 years of providing care to patients and their
families throughout Baxter and Marion counties and in addition, 11 years at the
Hospice House. For more information, please call our office at 870-508-1771 or
email [email protected].
