50th Panto: ???
Welcome
It is with great pleasure that once again I welcome you all to our annual
Pantomime; it is hard to believe that 12 months have passed since we were
here last.
It is my privilege to be Chairman of such a talented and dedicated group of people
who give of their time to be part of the Killorglin Panto. It requires a large group of
people to put on a show like Long John Silver. There are cast, chorus, musicians,
children’s chorus, lighting people, sound engineers, back stage crew, front of house
crew, makeup crew, catering crew, costumes and these are only the people who are
involved on the night. To get the show to the stage requires another army of people.
We have painters, carpenters, plumbers, typists, printers, dress makers, sewing
machine operators, transport, programme and ticket designers.
All of these people swing into action to get the show on the road but none of this
would happen if it were not for the dedication of one man and that man is Mr. Panto
(or should that be Dame) Declan Mangan. Declan as you know has been involved
with all of our Pantomime’s to date and this is number Forty Nine (49) his
enthusiasm for the panto is just as strong now as it was for the first show all those
years back. When Long John Silver is put to bed in February it will be down to work
for our 50th Production.
I would also like to pay tribute to you our audiences who turn up year on year in
good weather and bad to give us your support it is greatly appreciated.
Enough said switch of your mobile phone sit back relax and enjoy the show.
MylesO’Brien
Chairman Killorglin Pantomime Group.
A well known show song goes “another opening,
another show”, it could very well be written as
“another year, another Panto!” Last October, as we
began rehearsals, the familiar faces turned up and I
was delighted to see we had a good smattering of
new faces as well. This is very encouraging because
without new blood, the Panto group would decrease
in size and enthusiasm, but the newcomers puts a
spring in everyone’s step, and the future looks secure
for a few more years yet.
Long John Silver is a reworking of “Treasure Island”
which we did in 1986.Is it really 26 years ago - time
flies when you are having fun.
It is exciting to welcome back Finbarr Coffey to the
title role, Finbarr’s voice and stage presence
guarantees a certain hit show. I’m Dame Hawkins
and my niece Renee Kavanagh plays my son Jim!
And if that’s difficult to figure out, the versatile
comedienne Hazel Devane gives a memorable funny
performance as my “beau” Squire Trewlaney.
Enough to confuse any man/woman!
The comic duo of Hans and Nees (Aidan Clifford
and Ger O Connor) are in sparkling form but meet
their match in Buttercup and Daisy (Sinead Pigott
and Maura Moriarty). The ever steady John
McGeever is Captain Smolett, and his former sidekick Colm Clifford (last year’s Kermit) does an
excellent take off of Michael D. in the role of Ben
Gunn. Newcomer Kieran Flynn is the mysterious
Captain Bones, who meets is match in the
frightening Blind Pew (Lisa Corkery).Special thanks
to Sean Joy who was a valuable understudy at all the
rehearsals.
Chief, and newcomer
Danielle O Riordan is
sure to win many fans in
the role of the Princess.
Our excellent choreographer, Jackie O Mahony, as
well as having the dancers in superb shape, also
plays the female romantic lead who has an eye on
Jim .Thanks Jackie for a wonderful contribution.
We are delighted to welcome back Mick Jones as
our invaluable Musical Director. As well as having
the chorus in splendid voice, Mick also wrote the
lyrics for two of the songs in the show and has done
Trojan work with the Principals and Orchestra.
A huge thanks to Paul Walker and his crew and our
superb Artistic Director Nikki Roberts. Once again
our costumiere extraordinaire, Anne Mangan, has
come up trumps. I said to Anne that we could reuse
the costumes from 1986. Would she agree? Oh no
she wouldn’t and once again she has put her
amazing design and creative skills to stunning effect.
May she never stop!!
My thanks to everyone involved in
getting our 49th panto on stage,
it would be impossible
without your wonderful
commitment and
enthusiasm. I’m looking
forward to the 50th already.
