Chapter 1 Living a healthy life 1.1 What is health? Total health is combination of various factors Physical Mental/Emotional Social Well-being The Health Continuum What is Wellness? An overall state of well-being, or total health (A way of living day to day life) Making good decisions Practicing healthy behaviors What are these healthy habits? Getting 8 – 10 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for at least 20 min. a day, three or more days a week Maintaining a healthy weight Avoiding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs Abstaining from sexual activity before marriage Managing stress Maintaining positive relationships Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries Prevention Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury Wearing safety belts Applying sun screen Avoiding unsafe areas Importance of Health Education Provide accurate health information to help people make healthy choices Give people the tools they need to help live long, energetic and productive lives Healthy People 2010 Nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the U.S. Two Goals Increase quality and years of healthy life for all Americans Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability and location Health Literacy A person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use the resources to promote his or her health and wellness. A health literate individual needs to be: A critical thinker and problem solver A responsible, productive citizen A self-directed learner An effective communicator Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle Health Triangle – 3 elements of Health Physical Health Mental/Emotional Health Social Health Health Triangle activity Groups of no more than 3 Poster board Magazines Cut out pictures of health/unhealthy activities for each area Influences on your Health Heredity- refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents Environment- the sum of your surroundings Physical environmentpollution, dust, smoke, crime Social environmentFamily and peers Culture- collective beliefs, customs and behaviors of a group Influences on your Health cont. Attitude- You must believe there is a benefit to you Behavior- Will you follow the crowd?
