THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI
The Eucharist was instituted by Christ on the eve of his passion. It is his way of being present to all of
us. Since the time of the Apostles, Christians have been celebrating the Eucharist. It is the meal in
which Christians partake of the Body and Blood of Christ.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church summarises the importance of the Eucharist this way.
The Eucharist is “the source and summit of Christian life”. “The other sacraments and indeed all
ecclesiastical ministries and works of the Apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are
oriented towards it. For, in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the church,
namely Christ himself our Pasch” (1324).
The Feast of Corpus Christi, the name of this feast celebrating the Holy Eucharist. In some ways every
day, especially every Sunday, is a feast of the Eucharist, none the less a desire to specifically celebrate the Eucharist
developed. The special celebration of the Corpus Christi as a feast owes its origin to St Juliana and the Papal bull of
Pope Urban IV who commanded the universality of the feast. The outdoor procession of the Blessed Sacrament and
the exposition and Benediction are common practices in honouring the Lord who is present and available to us in the
Eucharist. As we celebrate this great Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we who participate and share the
Eucharistic meal may become one body and one blood who are willing to be broken and shared among our brothers
and sisters and become united and sealed in our communion with each other.

PARISH POTTED HISTORY 2- Did you know?
Our little wooden church was built and opened in 1912, ninety-nine years after explorers, Blaxland,
Wentworth and Lawson, camped near a swamp at the SE corner of what is now Glenbrook Oval. We
belonged to Penrith Catholic parish. From 1911-13 an influx of many workers and their families came for
the massive railway deviation works. The rail line was to be diverted from the initial route at the
bottom of Hare Street (now the Great Western Highway) to the rail track we currently use.
The spiritual needs of the many Irish workers employed for the railway, prompted the building of the
Catholic Church in Glenbrook, with land donated by Mr Harold Norrie, one time Secretary to the
Sydney Harbour Trust, and the drive of Fr Thomas Barlow, Penrith Parish Priest. Before 1912 Mass
had been celebrated during week days in a cottage occupied by Fr James Sheridan,
(Parish Priest of Penrith 1892-1900) on the site now occupied by the RAAF at Lapstone. Mass was also
said in the home of Mr and Mrs Wood and in the Glenbrook School of Arts, and also at the rail workers
camp near Emu Road. The Nolan family donated the Stations of the Cross for the church. Descendants
of Mr. Nolan still belong to our parish! Wonderful!
