FIREWORKS!!!
“Another fantastic fireworks night
at The Lensbury celebrated with
a spectacular display, fun
entertainment and face painting
for the kids and plenty of food and
drink for all. The weather was kind
to us and clear skies made for a
magical evening.”
£1.6 million Investment in the Ground Floor 2017
The final phase of the Ground
Floor Refurbishment Project
will commence during January
2017 and will cover the final
pieces of the Ground Floor
that have not been previously
refurbished.
The total refurbishment project, over
the past four years, has allowed us
to decrease our carbon footprint by
18%, by upgrading all the mechanical
and electrical elements that make
the buildings function effectively, as
well as introduce new decoration.
The 2017 project will also create
an improved Members’ Reception
entrance with a more effectively
positioned reception desk, an
enlarged Spa, a repositioned Soft
Play/Diner area and the creation
of a separate Dunbar Restaurant/
function room.
The Adrenalin sports shop will close
and the Club will offer the purchase
of essential supplies such as swimming
goggles, balls, grips and other
consumables. A racquet re-stringing
service will be made available
through the tennis team and the
Racquets Manager, Scott Woods,
will share details with members
during December.
We are sorry to bid farewell to
Adrenalin but space is at a premium
in the Club and alternative locations
discussed, meant closing down space
currently used by Members’ children.
We wish all the best to Phil, Brad and
the team.
The Adrenalin shop will close on 31st
December 2016.

The final phase of the Ground
Floor refurbishment project will
start in January encompassing the
current Members’ Entrance,
the old Spa and the staff area
behind Members’ Reception,
as well as the shop structure,
over two storeys. The last major
overhaul of these areas was in
the mid-1970’s and complete
refurbishment is needed.
Bob Birchall Director of Finance and Administration and Lacy-Curtis Ward CEO
Dear Members,
I hope everyone had a splendid
Fireworks Night – it was another
stunning display of fireworks with
lots of other fun activities as well.
The pictures tell the story – be
sure to check out the web site for
pictures of the event.
We have had a busy autumn with
various refurbishment projects on
the Grounds. The tennis roadside
Players’ Lounge and surrounding
area has been refurbished with
new decoration, new carpet, new
furniture (inside and outside) and
new landscaping to brighten the
appearance of this area.
All the tennis shelters across
the estate have been redone this
year and our focus next year, for
the tennis community, will be
the resurfacing of some of our
riverside courts.
Karl, our Head Gardener and his
team have also completed the new
area, by the Grounds and Gardens
Yard, with new shrubs being
planted and grading/seeding of
the area. The semi-annual visit by
our tree surgeon has prompted the
preparation of all our trees for the
winter including the trees in this
area, so it should be very pleasant
in the springtime.

The work will include a full re-wire,
re-plumb, new heating and cooling
systems, removal of asbestos, LED
lighting installation, and complete
redecoration – finishing a six
year project to update the main
Lensbury buildings. On the back
of this work, our carbon footprint
has fallen 18% due to the vast
improvement in our M&E systems.
An additional door will be added,
near the vending machine, to
break the wind tunnel, that
currently steals a lot of heating in
the winter. This will allow a better
working environment for staff in
Members’ Reception and again,
lower our carbon footprint.
Because we are bringing new
areas into use for members, the
disruption should be minimal.
Members’ Reception will relocate
for two months while the new
Reception area is created but
other areas will be refurbished in
a phased approach. We will miss
working with Adrenalin Sports and
wish them all well for the future.
The Lockside Reception and the
Tennis office will take over sales
of critical equipment for tennis
and swimming.
The location of the new Spa will
be more appropriate to rest and
relaxation. And the new location
of the Soft Play Area will allow
for children’s noise to travel into
the parking lot and will allow for
much more natural light in the
children’s area – enhancing the
experience for adults and children.
The current Soft Play Area will
be refurbished into a dining/
function room allowing for a more
satisfactory environment for the
Dunbar Restaurant in the evenings
and for accommodating more for
events like Christmas Day lunch
and Summer Ball.
I hope everyone is ready for the
holiday season – remember that
there are a few places left for the
Christmas Carvery, in the run-up
to Christmas but Christmas Day
Lunch has sold out already. And
please accept the whole staff’s
best wishes for a happy and
healthy 2017.

An Introduction to the Use and Benefits
of the Pilates Reformer
There is probably no piece of
Pilates equipment more famous
than the Pilates Reformer - and
for good reason. The Reformer
makes a dramatic impression
when you first see one and an
even more dramatic change in
the body when you use it.
What Is a Pilates Reformer?
Invented by Pilates founder Joseph
Pilates, the Reformer is a bed-like frame
with a flat platform on it, called the
carriage, which rolls back and forth on
wheels within the frame. The carriage
is attached to one end of the Reformer
by a set of springs. The springs provide
choices of differing levels of resistance,
as the carriage is pushed or pulled
along the frame. Reformer parts are
adjustable for differing body sizes and
for differing levels of skill.
How is a Reformer used?
One of the best things about the
Reformer is its versatility. Exercises can
be done lying down, sitting, standing,
pulling the straps, pushing the foot-bar,
perched on the foot-bar, and perched
on the shoulder blocks. In other words,
the Reformer can train many parts of
the body in so many different ways
with just one relatively sleek piece
of equipment.
What are the benefits of Pilates
Reformer exercises?
The Reformer offers all the famous
benefits of Pilates including overall
strength, flexibility, coordination and
balance. These in turn lead to daily
life improvements like better posture,
efficient movement and relief from pain
associated with physical imbalances
such as back pain. When we talk
about strength building and the Pilates
powerhouse muscles, the muscles of
the core are paramount.
Flat abs, strong backs, toned buttocks
and thighs are all results of this
emphasis. Other equipment and
Pilates mat exercises work too, but the
Reformer creates a unique and varied
exercise environment.
The Reformer is large enough to
accommodate full-range motion, which
is wonderful for increasing flexibility
while building strength. It seems to
invite the length we want to create
in the body; it also trains the body to
sustain that length. Pushing and pulling
with legs or arms against the resistance
of the springs, carriage, and body
weight is generally strength building.
The exercises provide enough
resistance and movement variety to
help build strong bones.
There is a special feature: eccentric
muscle contractions.
This is when a muscle lengthens as it
resists a force. The Reformer is a set-up
for eccentric contraction.
That is one of the keys to achieving the
long, strong muscles without bulk that
Pilates is known for. Exercising with the
Reformer is possible for anyone, at any
level of fitness. It’s no wonder the
full name of the Reformer is the
Universal Reformer!
Reformer Pilates in the
Weirbank Suite
Reformer sessions were launched
earlier this year and have grown in
popularity since the Wellness Week.
Our resident teacher, Sarah AshleyBrown, is based at the Club four days
per week and offers varied session
times for both one to one tuition
(block of five sessions @ £45 each)
and one hour small group sessions
with a maximum of three participants.
These sessions are only £20 and also
purchased in a block of five.
We are delighted to have recently
added well renowned local teacher,
Cynthia Young, on to our programme.
Cynthia, who runs her own Perform
Pilates studio in Church Street,
Twickenham, will be offering
Reformer sessions on Thursday
mornings in the Weirbank.
Another Perform Pilates
teacher, Sophy, will also be
available for various slots
every Tuesday.
Reformer Pilates Beginner’s
Workshop
Cynthia will be holding a monthly
workshop for beginners as of Saturday
19th November. This 45 minute
workshop is limited to six participants
and there will be two workshops made
available on the day. The cost of the
workshop is only £10.
Due to the break during the festive
period, the next workshop will run
on 13th January.
Bookings are strictly on a first
come, first served basis so please
book in at Members’ Reception, to
avoid disappointment. It is only
possible to book in once for this
particular workshop.

Getting to know you: Scott and Lucy...
The Lensbury Racquets
Manager, Scott Woods (SW)
and the Fitness & Studio
Manager, Lucy Brown (LB),
both commenced their new
roles at the Club over the past
few months. We got them both
together for a snapshot of
their backgrounds.
1. What accomplishment are
you most proud of and why?
SW: From a professional point of
view, it would have been starting a
new tennis programme on new courts
at the age of 24 and building it up
from 0 to 220 players involved in the
sport within 2 years. From a personal
point of view it’s buying a property
and doing a large proportion of the
DIY refurb it needed.
LB: From a professional point of
view, it has to be graduating with my
Master’s Degree. My dissertation alone
took nine months and was incredibly
challenging, comparing interval and
continuous training in paraplegic
individuals. Personally, my biggest
achievement was reaching the summit
of Mt. Kilimanjaro earlier this year! This
was mentally and physically the most
demanding task I have ever completed.
2. What industry experience
has led you to your position at
The Lensbury?
SW: I have been working in the
sports industry for over 15 years now.
I started out as a tennis coach learning
the trade between my studies at
college and attaining my university
degree. I then worked my way up
through the ranks to become Club
Manager for The England Sports
Group (Tennis England). There I ran
the Weybridge site and it was in this
position at the age of 24 that I gained
my first management experience. It
was a steep learning curve but having
a strong passion for sport and working
with people meant the majority of it
came naturally to me. My next move
in the industry was to The Lensbury
were I worked as a development
tennis coach and junior team coordinator for around 2.5 years. I then
moved to Canada where I worked as
a Human Resources Manager before
returning to the UK. Upon my return
I worked at the Dukes Meadows High
Performance Tennis Centre as the
Tennis Office Manager. This position
gave me a huge amount of experience
in the world of tennis management
and what is required to take a fast
paced sports business forward. Then,
luckily for me, I found out about the
position of Racquets Manager at
The Lensbury. I couldn’t have applied
quicker. From experience I knew it
was a great place to work, friendly
staff, stunning facilities, and passionate
members. So here I am today.
LB: My experience actually started
at University, having completed a
degree in Sports Biomedicine and
Nutrition, I went on to do a Masters
in Sports Coaching. As part of this I
was required to coach a local team
and train individuals to practice the
coaching theories I was learning about
and this led me to becoming a selfemployed personal trainer. I quickly
realised that I wanted to go down
more of the management route so
I started out with larger chain clubs.
Firstly, I was a Gym Supervisor at
EasyGym and then I progressed to
Assistant Manager for the UK’s largest
gym group, Pure Gym. I spent over
two years in this role and continued
with my personal training, but this
is where my love for group exercise
grew. I qualified as an Indoor Cycling,
GRIT, BodyPump and BodyAttack
instructor and continued to teach
these as part of my job and as a
freelancer. My position at PureGym
gave me a huge amount of experience
in a day to day gym operations as
well as the management and planning
of studio programmes. It is very rare
to find a role in this industry that
combines studio programming as well
as gym management so when the
Fitness and Studio Manager position at
The Lensbury became available, I knew
that this role would be special!
4. What did you have to study
to be qualified in your field?
SW: I have always excelled in sports
education. I truly believe this is
because of my passion for sport and
the people involved in it. My sports
degree at university focused on sports
business, management, anatomy and
psychology of sport and coaching.
These have been the initial building
blocks to prepare me for the world of
sports management. I then went on
to attain my Level 3 tennis coaching
qualification. I have undertaken
various other sports related courses in
management and coaching which have
aided my professional development.
I am a true believer that learning is life
long and some of the greatest things
you can learn are from the people
you work with.
Scott Woods
LB: I started out as a county netball
player and that made me fall in love
with physical activity from a young
age. From there, I knew that I always
wanted to be active so did my degree
in Sports Biomedicine / Nutrition
and then a Master’s Degree in Sports
Coaching. I am a really keen learner
and have done many courses since
to progress my knowledge - including
personal training, pre and post-natal
qualifications as well as teaching
courses and leisure management.
Health & Fitness is such a fluid industry
that you have to keep learning to
stay on top of the industry trends.
Next up for me is an exercise
referral qualification!
Lucy Brown
3. Give us an example of a
typical day in your role?
SW: What I love about the role
is how diverse it is. Every day is
different but generally I am working
in the office making sure our tennis
and squash coaching programmes
are set up and running smoothly.
Responding to enquires or items that
require my attention, I liaise with a
number of other departments on a
daily basis including the marketing,
grounds, facilities, and membership
and reception teams. Not only am I
ensuring the day to day activities run
smoothly but also looking into future
developments and how we can build
on what is a very successful site.
My favourite part of the job is getting
out and about around the estate.
This could be interacting with
members or checking that our facilities
are in working order or looking at
what future developments might be
possible whether small or big.
LB: Generally, I am working in the
office or gym at Lockside. We have
over 160 classes at the Lensbury and
we try hard to keep them running
as smoothly as possible. We have a
very interesting mix of member types
who all naturally want an exercise
regime to fit their needs. I have
been particularly impressed with
the sheer volume of members who
maintain such a disciplined regime and
impressive turnout to classes. My days
are taken up with studio matters but
future plans are to develop the gym
programme and provide our members
with more interactions on the gym
floor. On top of this, I will be looking
at how we can improve our Blitz
offering for the younger members of
the Club, Fit for Life and to follow in
the footsteps of the older members
who are such great role models!
Tennis
Here at The Lensbury, tennis is
available for everyone all year round.
We have had some great tennis so far
with huge numbers in our coaching
programme, club sessions and
competitions. It’s wonderful to see so
many of you playing and enjoying the
beautiful game.
We’ve had some great projects
going on throughout the Club. The
refurbished Roadside Players’ Lounge,
the new information boards and
new outdoor furniture next to the
roadside courts. This investment looks
to continue even further with 2017
projects to include the re-painting
of the roadside tennis courts and
resurfacing the artificial grass courts.
Our spring term time tennis
programme starts up again on Monday
9th January. If you are currently on
our programme please make sure you
sign up again to secure your place for
next term. If you are new and want
to find out more information about
joining us on the courts for some
coaching, please get in touch.
Term dates:
Mon 9 th January – Sat 1st April 2017,
Half Term: 13th – 19 th February
Our new ‘Me & 3 Coaching’ is for
adults who would like to set up their
own tennis group with 3 of their
friends. You let us know the days and
times that suit you and we will help
set up a new group with you as the
first 4 players.
The new tennis club membership
starts from 1st Jan 2017. This comes
with some great new benefits
including all the originals. Please speak
to the tennis team or Members’
Reception to sign up or for more
information about the benefits.

There will be a dedicated FAQ page
on the website keeping members
updated on further details and
progress of the project.
Relocating the Spa to the small
building, that held the shop and rooms
upstairs, allows us to offer a quiet and
more restful Spa experience, which
was not possible in its current location
near the Members’ entrance. The new
Spa will have five beautiful treatment
rooms, as well as a new Relaxation
Room overlooking the grounds and
the river. One of the new treatment
rooms will offer space for two people
to have treatments together, including
a new hydro-bath facility.
The Dunbar will be relocated to the
existing Diner, allowing for extra
seating in the Ground Floor areas for
the All Day Menu service. The existing
Diner/Soft Play Area will be relocated
into the ground floor wing vacated by
the Spa and staff offices. This change
will mean that the main children’s area
will have much more natural light than
the current offer and play noise will be
further away from the main Ground
Floor areas.
The disruption to members will be
minimal as the project will be done
in phases, starting with the opening
of the new Spa on 1st April 2017,
followed by the opening of the new
Members’ Reception and Diner/Soft
Play at the beginning of June and the
new Dunbar Room, at the end of July.
Members’ Reception will be moved
temporarily for the two and a half
months while the work is taking place
in this area.
