Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever.
Key Question: How can you love like Jesus?
Bottom Line: I can love everyone.
Memory Verse: “Love one another.” John 13:34, NIV
Bible Story Focus: I can share when I have a lot.
Bigger Barns • Luke 12:16-21
Make It True (Large Group, 15 minutes)
Gather the kids together for a Large Group time that includes the introductory sketch
interactive worship, and the Bible story.
Introductory Sketch
What You Need: The toolbox from last week, 2-3 small pieces of wood, a large bag of
gumballs, a note card, and a combination lock (to put on the toolbox)
(Host enters carrying the locked toolbox with all the other items listed above inside it. He
then sets the toolbox down onto the table and stands behind it.)
STORYTELLER: “Hey, everyone! My name is [Your name]. I hope you don’t mind if I
pull out my tools and get started. I have a VERY important project to work on and THIS
project is just for me! (Pull out the hammer and two pieces of wood.) Today I’m planning
to build a box, but not just any box. This is a super secret box meant only for me—NO
sharing! In fact, when I’m finished putting all the sides together, I’m going to add this
lock. (Pull out the combination lock.) Have you ever seen one of these before? It’s a
special lock and you have to put in a code in order to open it. Watch! (Hose enters code
and opens the lock.) Cool right? And I’m the only one who knows the code!
“Now you might be wondering why I need to put a lock on my box. Well, that’s easy.
Because this is my special box for my special things, so I don’t have to share them with
anyone. And my FIRST special thing is this! (Pull out the box of skittles.) Just look at all
these skittles! You guys, they are so yummy. There are so many skittles in here, I could
have a skittle shower. And absolutely no sharing whatsoever. These are all mine!
“Let’s see, I think I need some nails. (Dig through toolbox and pulls out the note card.)
Hey, how did this get in here? Oh, it looks like another note from my Dad. (Reading.)
‘Dear [Your name], I hope you’re enjoying these tools. Just remember, I’ve taught you
everything I know about building and shared all my knowledge with you so that you can

build things that are helpful. You can build things for yourself too, but always think about
how you can use what you know to help others. Love you, Dad.’
“Wow. My dad is awesome. And you know, he’s right. For a minute there I forgot about
WHY I like to build things. You know what my very favorite part is? It’s when I make
something useful for someone and watch their face when they get it. Like my Aunt
Sue—she LOVED the birdhouse I made for her last week. Maybe instead of putting a
lock on here, I should make a little chute for the skittles to roll down through, so I can
share them with my friends. I mean, there are a LOT of skittles in here. I could never eat
them all myself anyway. Maybe I don’t need this lock after all. Guess I better get busy
building and sharing. Let’s sing some songs and hear a cool Bible story. Ready? Stand
up.
Worship
His Love Never Ends
Jesus Loves Everyone
What You Need: Paperclip “Memory Verse Card” (from the Week 1 Activity Pages on
the Website) in your Bible at John 13:34, NIV.
WORSHIP LEADER: I can’t wait to sing with you. But first, tell me: How can you love
like Jesus?”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] “I can love everyone.”
WORSHIP LEADER: “Yes, that’s right! Let’s sing.
Lead children in singing “His Love Never Ends,” this month’s worship song.
“Yay! What incredible singers you are. How can you love like Jesus?”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] “I can love everyone.”
WORSHIP LEADER: “That’s right! [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. Remember,
our memory verse this month tells us to love one another. Are you ready to do it with
me? (Pause.) Let’s do it! Love (hug yourself and twist) one another (point to all your
friends), John 13:34. (Open your hands like a book.) Let’s do it again.”
CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: “Love (hug yourself and twist) one another (point
to all your friends), John 13:34.” (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat several times.)

that!”

Bible Story
What You Need: A Bible, a straw hat, a large bag of pom-poms, 1 small clear
container, 1 large clear container, 3 paper plates, a box to hold all of these items, and a
table
STORYTELLER: I have a story to tell you. But it’s not just any story. It’s a story that
Jesus told to teach us something. Are you ready to hear the story Jesus told? Cool. You
can read about it in your Bibles! (Hold up Bible.)
“Jesus once told a story about a farmer. (Put the straw hat on your head.) Now this
farmer was a really good farmer. One year, everything he planted grew into food. He
had a lot. The farmer was very happy. Let’s pretend this is the food he grew. (Pull out
the large bag of pom-poms.)
“Now when the farmer went to put all his food into the barn, can you guess what
happened? (Pull out the small container and put it on the table where the audience can
see it.) When he went to store his food, it wouldn’t fit. His barn was too small for all his
food. (Pour the pom-poms into the small container until it overflows.)
“What would he do? The farmer had a choice to make. (Pull out the large container and
set it on the table next to the small one.) He could build bigger barns to put all the food
in so he could keep it all for himself, even though he could never eat all that food. Or he
could share.
(Pull out the plates and set them on the table. Then pour a few pom-poms from the
small container onto each plate.)
“He could give the extra food to families who didn’t have a lot. Then everyone could
have enough. So tell me, if you were the farmer, what would you do? Would you build
bigger barns (hold up the large container), or would you share? (Hold up one of the
plates.)

“You would share! Of course you would, because you want to love everyone like Jesus.
But do you know what the farmer did? He chose to build the bigger barns. (Begin
pouring ALL the pom-poms into the large container.) He kept it all for himself, and God
was not happy.
“So what do we learn from this story? What was Jesus trying to teach us? Jesus wanted
us to know that whenever we have a lot—a lot of toys or a lot of a snack—we should
remember to share with others. It’s the one way we can love everyone like Jesus. How
can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. How can you love like
Jesus?”
CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “I can love everyone.”
STORYTELLER: “That’s right! Jesus told us that sharing is loving and that’s the best
thing to do. Keeping your stuff to yourself isn’t loving, and we want to love like Jesus
does. How can you love like Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can love everyone. Great job.
Let’s pray!
Open them. [Open hands.] Close them. [Close
hands.] Open them. [Open hands.] Close them.
[Close hands.] Give a little clap. [Clap hands.]
Open them. [Open hands.] Close them. [Close
hands.] Open them. [Open hands.] Close them.
[Close hands.] Fold them in your lap. [Fold hands in
lap.]
“Dear God, thank You for this story Jesus told so we can know that one big way we can
love others is by sharing when we have a lot. Help us to be different from the farmer
and to look for opportunities to share and love like You love us this week. In Jesus’
name, amen.”
(Dismiss children and leaders to their groups.)
