SEED VARIETY DESCRIPTION:
SS 8404 is a medium maturity soft red winter wheat that has a strong following with many customers. High yields
and high test weight on strong medium-short straw is very attractive to top managers. It has very good winter
survival with good general disease resistance plus resistance to biotype E Hessian fly. SS 8404 is recommended for
high yield environments in the mid-south, east coast and south. US Protected Variety under the PVPA. Unauthorized
propagation is prohibited. It is also patented. Recommended Zones: 1–2–3

KEY STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
Strengths: That short height helps it stand like bamboo in high yield environments were nitrogen overlaps can cause
lodging. That also minimizes the trash on the ground after harvest and in the way for planting soybeans. Over the years
has produced some outstanding test weights. All in all, a good variety for top managers.
Weaknesses: Stripe rust. Keep an eye on this variety if stripe rust appears. It’s also getting some age, but we don’t have
another variety of this “type” in the fold yet. Avoid planting where yield expectations are below average for the area.
Comments: Slightly off the pace of the newest high yielding varieties, but is still a great variety to sell to already
satisfied customers who like it. Medium seed size, but with its short stature a medium to the higher side seeding rate is
recommended.
