SING A SONG Performance Standard 29B.A Sing a children’s song about a famous figure in the target language accordingly: • Knowledge: Know the main details about the famous figure’s life (e.g., Napoleon’s life). • Comprehension: Understand the important events in the famous figure’s life. • Communication: Sing the song and answer age-appropriate questions about the famous figure. In order to understand music, dance, folk art, visual art, drama and architecture related to the target language societies (29B), students should experience sufficient learning opportunities to develop the following • Sing or dramatize a song in the target language. Provide each student with a copy of the song and the task sheet. Have students review and discuss the assessment task and how the rubric will be used to evaluate their work. Note: The materials included in this assessment are for French and the famous figure is Napoleon. However, this assessment may be adapted to any language and famous figure. Give students some background about the famous figure. Teach the song, including the claps which substitute for words, as a lead-in to the material. Younger students may assume the role of leader for the song. Give students the set of age-appropriate questions about the famous figure. For younger students a few very general questions may be read to the students and they will respond orally. Older students will indicate their answers on the task sheet. Evaluate each student’s presentation using the Foreign Language Rubric. Add each student’s scores to determine the performance level. • Knowledge: Knew key details of the famous figure’s life. • Comprehension: Understood vocabulary and cultural context. • Communication: Correctly sang song. Answered questions correctly.
