THANK YOU for your interest in the 2014 South Dakota State Fair! Your entries highlight the
talents and skills of citizens across the state of South Dakota. Fairgoers of all ages love to see
the accomplishments and talents of fellow South Dakotans. The exhibit areas in the Women’s
Building, Horticulture Building, and the Art & Education Building are the sites for opportunities
for participants like you.
YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR FAIR, whether you are a long time exhibitor or a first year
competitor. Look through the book. You will find familiar and new avenues of showmanship!
Review the guidelines to entering your exhibits for display, judging and possible prize winning!!!

1) Static Exhibits Entry Form and W-9 Form are found in
the Women’s Building, Horticulture Building, and
Arts/Education Building Static Exhibit Premium Books.
Forms may also be downloaded at www.sdstatefair.com.
2) The South Dakota State Fair will accept Static Exhibits
Entry Form and W-9 Form between April 3-July 31, 2014
in all departments EXCEPT Literature which closes July
17, 2014. Mail completed forms to the South Dakota
State Fair.
3) Exhibitor must complete Static Exhibits Entry Form and
W-9 Form with name, full address, and social security
number. Exhibitor’s name on Static Exhibits Entry Form
and W-9 Form must be the same. Incomplete and illegible
forms will be returned. Remember to include entry fee.
$30 service fee is charged if check is returned by a bank
for insufficient funds. Entries may NOT be made by
telephoning the South Dakota State Fair.
4) Exhibitor must complete a separate Static Exhibits
Entry Form for each department. Only one entry may be
made in each class unless stated otherwise in rules for
that division/class.
5) Entry must be exhibited in the name of the person
doing the work and completed since the last South Dakota
State Fair between September 3, 2013 and
August 28, 2014.
6) Youth is defined as 18 years of age and under prior to
the State Fair. Youth may also enter in adult categories.
Exhibits will be judged according to rules of the division.
7) Computerized entry tags will be mailed to exhibitors.
Do NOT alter tags! Exhibits having altered tags will not be
accepted and will be disqualified.
8) For exhibit check-in and release information, refer to
Women’s Building, Horticulture Building, and
Arts/Education Building Static Exhibit Premium Books.
Please respect these times. No early releases. No
exhibits will be released without claim tag.
9) Entry may be mailed to the South Dakota State Fair.
Entry must be securely wrapped and boxed to prevent
damage. Exhibitor is responsible for insurance. Entry
tag must be attached to exhibit. Include a copy of Static
Exhibit Entry Form to serve as packing slip and for
check-in purposes. Draw a line through any item on the
entry form NOT included with mailed exhibits. Entry must
be received in the South Dakota State Fair office by
August 20, 2013 to qualify for judging.
10) Every precaution is taken for the safekeeping of
exhibit. The South Dakota State Fair is NOT responsible
for any loss or damage that may occur.
11) No exhibits may be sold. Do not display sales tags or
advertising logos on exhibits.
12) No person employed in a department may be an
exhibitor in that department.
13) Superintendents of the Women’s Building,
Horticulture Building, and Arts/Education Building may
determine the eligibility of exhibits and may disqualify
exhibits if necessary. Disqualified exhibits may or may
not be displayed during the State Fair as per
superintendents’ decision.
14) Judge will not award premium to unworthy exhibit. If
exhibit is not worthy of a first-place ribbon, judge may
award a lower-place ribbon.
15) A division or class may be deleted if no entries are
made for three years.
16) Exhibits not claimed will be shipped COD to exhibitor
unless arrangements are made with the building
superintendent. Items not claimed and not suitable for
mailing become property of the South Dakota State Fair.
17) Premium checks will be paid within 90 days after the
State Fair. Premium checks are void if not cashed within
180 days after issue date.

$50.00 to winning entry.
Exhibitor will be recognized during a special ceremony
on the Freedom Stage at which time
South Dakota State First Lady Linda Daugaard
will be presented with the winning entry.
Winning entry will be displayed
in Pierre for 3 months and returned to exhibitor.
DEPARTMENT 370
Literature
Superintendents: Mary Helen Wipf & Andrea Olson
General Rules: Entries are qualified for competition in
Department 370 Literature when the following rules are met.
There are no exceptions to the following entry rules.
1) Refer to the South Dakota State Fair Static Exhibits
General Rules.
2) Entries must be made in the name of the person doing the
work and completed since the last Fair, between the dates of
September 3, 2013 and August 28, 2014.
11) Definitions:
•
Youth: 18 years of age or younger prior to the
start of the Fair.
•
Amateur: Writes for the pleasure involved and
does not derive the majority of income from
writing.
•
Professional: Writes primarily for the purpose of
selling; or who has had 3 or more years of
literature training; or teaches literature media.
Derives the majority of income from being a
writer.
3) Writer must be a resident of South Dakota.
4) Entries in the Literature Department will close
July 17. Only one entry may be made in each class. Entry
fees for entering exhibits :
Youth
Entry Fee $2.00 per item
Amateur
Entry Fee $3.00 per item
Professional
Entry Fee $8.00 per item
5) Entrant should not enter the same poetry or prose for more
than two consecutive years. If suggestions for improvements
are made one year, it could be revised and submitted once
more provided the entry did not place first the prior year. No
poetry or prose entry, which has been awarded a first prize at
a prior fair, may be entered again.
6) All manuscripts must be typed on 8 ½” x 11” paper, double
spaced on one side of the paper only. Do NOT put names on
manuscripts. Do NOT fold manuscripts. All literature entries
must submit an Judge’s copy AND an exhibit copy.
7) Entry tags should be stapled to the upper left hand corner
of the manuscript.
8) Tagged manuscripts should be mailed to the
South Dakota State Fair; 890 3rd Street SW; Huron, SD
57350 and postmarked by July 29, 2014. Enclose a large,
stamped, self-addressed manila envelope for return of
manuscripts.
9) Critique sheets will be completed by the judges when
deemed to be of help to the writer.
10) When specified, prose and poetry exhibits must meet
word counts and line counts.
12) Manuscripts may be picked up on Tuesday,
September 2, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Exhibitor
must have claim check to remove exhibit from the
Art/Education building. If personally unable to pick-up
exhibit, exhibitor must sign a release authorizing an
individual to pick-up exhibit. Manuscripts not collected on
September 2, 2014 will be mailed in large manila
envelope supplied by exhibitor. Exhibitor must make
arrangements with superintendent if exhibit is to be
returned COD.
13) “POETRY DAY AT THE FAIR”…. If your poem wins a
ribbon and you would like the opportunity to read your
poem to an audience, check the box on the entry form.

LITERATURE
AWARD
The SOUTH DAKOTA STATE FAIR awards a
plaque to the writer who accumulates the
most points in any of the Literature
divisions. Points will be calculated as
follows:
First Place……….. 3 points
Second Place…... 2 points
Third Place………. 1 point
No special entry is required for this award. It
will be figured by the State Fair Office. This
award cannot be won two years in a row by
the same person.
MEDIA
Rules:
1.
Open to residents of South Dakota only.
2.
Includes newspapers and magazines. This
category is open to persons directly involved in the media.
3.
Entry submitted must be in published form. A tear sheet (full
pages containing story or picture) must be submitted for
newspaper or magazine entry sheets. Photostat copies are
permitted if they include the name of publication and date of
issue.
4.
Each entry must have attached to it an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of
paper bearing the class number and division description, title
or headline of article, publication’s name, address and date of
publication.
5.
Each non-bylined entry must be accompanied by a cover
letter of certification attesting to validity of authorship.
6.
All entries must have been published between June 1, 2013
and July 31, 2014.
7.
In the classes that require news photos or feature photos the
original photograph should be submitted with a tear sheet.
This will allow the judges to have the original photo and is to
the advantage of the exhibitor in case the newsprint is not of
the finest quality.
