NES Parent Memo 4-2-17
Tomorrow, Monday, April 3rd is a Power Monday.
Power Monday Traffic Concerns:





Car rider drop off time for late arrival on Power Monday begins at 9:00
and ends at 9:12.
Up until the last few weeks, we have not had any problems with students
being not arriving on time.
After reviewing video footage, the only issue we have noticed is that cars
are stopping in the middle of the lane for drop off. Even with one car
doing so, this creates a pause in the traffic flow.
Please be alert to traffic flow and have students ready to exit the vehicle
once you have pulled all the way down in the lane.
It is very important that all vehicles pull all the way down to the end of
the car rider lane (regardless of the time) for your child to exit the
vehicle.

NES PTO News and Upcoming Events:

NES PTO Meeting: April 4th at 6:30 with special guest speaker
Jonathan A. Hendrix, Special Agent with CE Investigations, U.S. Dept.
of Homeland Security.
o Please join us for a special presentation entitled, "Project iGuardian",
presented by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland
Security Investigations (HSI). Project iGuardian is an HSI initiative
"designed to inform youths, parents, and educators about the risks that
children face in the online environment" that also "aims to arm parents
with knowledge and resources to help protect their children." HSI,
which is the investigative arm of the Dept. of Homeland
Security, partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited
Children to create much of the presentation. We also give example


scenarios based on our local investigations to help parents, teachers,
and other law enforcement better understand how children can
become victimized online.
o The following are the three main risks discussed in this presentation:
 Online Predators and Social Media - Recent trends and tactics
used by adult predators online to meet and groom minors and
solicit sexual chats, images and meetings offline. This topic
also covers a new and growing trend of "sextortion" in which
minors are blackmailed after sending compromising photos or
videos. Includes discussion of the newest apps, online games,
and social networks tweens and teens are using.
 Revealing too much - Personal and private information shared
through texts, images or videos may attract unwanted attention
from cyberbullies or online predators. This may also lead to
serious offline consequences at school and with the law.
 Cyberbullying - The use of Internet technology or mobile
technology, such as cell phones, to bully or harass someone.
Spring Fling Cancelled: The PTO regrets to announce the cancellation of
our April 8th Spring Fling due to a schedule conflict and lack of parent
volunteer interest. We hope to provide community events like this one in the
future but we can't do it alone!
Your next opportunity to support our students and school along with
the PTO will be Friday, May 5th for one of our favorite fundraising
events of the year- the NES Cardinal Golf Scramble! You do not need to
be a golfer (or even familiar with the sport) to get involved. Contact Melanie
Moyer at [email protected] to volunteer for this
exciting event!
