Recreation on the Red Lake River 365 Days a Year www.fishingminnesota.com Picture of team? Crookston High School and Red Lake Watershed 3/15/2016 We would like to encourage teenagers to get out and enjoy nature and experience new things and to raise awareness for taking care of and enjoying our river. Spring Available Recreation • Fishing Fish Types: Walleye, Northern Pike, Channel Catfish • Paddling Water Movement: Smooth river, few issues; good for beginners. • Tubing Available Recreation • Frisbee Golf • Soccer PROS CONS Summer PROS CONS • Being active • Sometimes too hot • Warm outside • Being outside • Flooding • The weather is getting warmer • Ice is starting to melt • Wildlife is coming back out • Might still be cold outside Because of the potential for flooding, it is dangerous in and around the river during the spring. River levels should be checked before venturing out on a recreational activity to check if it will be dangerous. The USGS website would provide up to the minute river level readings. Available Recreation • Ice Fishing • Snowmobiling • Cross Country Skiing The Red Lake River forms smooth ice because there are minimal amounts of rock. It takes more time to form ice because the water is constantly flowing. PROS CONS • Going outside • Freezing weather • Being active • Hypothermia risk • Playing in the snow • Less daylight • Ice activities • Ice may not be safe Winter • Dehydration risk Red Lake River Paddling Proposed Excursions • Sunny • Might storm • Many things to do Kayak from A to B = 4.12 river miles and sinuosity of 1.96 Kayak from B to C = 7.30 river miles and sinuosity of 2.09 Kayak from A to C = 11.42 river miles Interpretation of Water Quality Table • Turbidity: The Broadway Bridge is over the state standard because it is further down the river, and collects more sediment. • Dissolved Oxygen: The river has lots of algae and other plant life. This means the amount of dissolved oxygen in the Red Lake River is plentiful and is great for fishing. PROS Route The route we have planned is going to start at the Gentilly Bridge and end at the Otter Tail Dam. For more experienced paddlers there is an option to do a longer route, which goes to Central Park in Crookston. The old Otter Tail Dam is on private property, so you would need to ask for permission to end your trip there. www.redlakewatershed.org, and Crookston Public Schools www.crookston.k12.mn.us • Low river levels Fall • Gaining more public access points to the river • Businesses that are designed for river recreation CONS • Being outside before • Bad weather Winter • Freezing • Pretty scenery temperature Our recommendations to improve river recreation on the Red Lake River: • Garbage disposal at access points Support for our Crookston River Watch Program is provided by the State of Minnesota Clean Water Fund and the Red River Watershed Management Board, Red Lake Watershed District Available Recreation • Birding Types of Birds: Ducks, Geese, Eagles, • Boating • Hiking Fox, Beavers, Mink, Rabbits, Deer Team members: Anna Huck Joey Rodriguez Emily Gillette Eliza Meyer Sawyer Bernd Lisa Lindemoen Advisor/Teacher: Mrs. Jessica Hanson
