Over the last several weeks I have emphasized in the sermons how God is moving Unity Christian Church forward but that in order for us to do so it is going to take serious prayer, hard work, heart, passion, and money from all of us. As a transforming 21st century congregation we are called to look beyond the walls of the church, think outside of the box, and dare to step out of the boat. At the Leadership Retreat and A.P.E. event we discussed this in length. Here is some of the information I shared with those who attended about what it means to be a transforming congregation based on William McConnel’s book, Renew Your Congregation: Healing the Sick, Raising the Dead: --Vital and Growing Congregations have these characteristics: Purpose (other-focused) Willingness to change (to accomplish purpose) Leadership (Laity and clergy work together to accomplish purpose) --The task of church leadership is to get and keep the church healthy by following God’s instructions. Here is the recipe: *Prayer—never stop *Pastor with leadership skills *Seek and Discover God’s direction for the church *Stay on track, continue to pray *Transform the Church’s focus and deepen the church’s spirituality *Continue to pray and stay on track *Choose the church leadership prayerfully and carefully and have pastor and Lay Leadership develop into a team * Stay on track, continue to pray *Develop a healthy church through small groups *Then keep on praying, and try your best to stay on track --Transformation is less about programs and more about who the church is—church’s personality. --Keep the church healthy and it will grow. 1 MARCH EVENTS 9:45 a.m. – Opening Devotions 10:00 a.m. – Lenten Bible Study 10:00 a.m. – Sun. Today’s people want sermons that will help them deal with life’s challenges. Mar. 20 – NEWSLETTER DEADLINE Thurs., Frid. & Sat – Clothing Bank Days March 4-17 – TO OUR HOUSE Sched. For our regular Elders' meeting we met together on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. for a Webinar sponsored by Lexington Theological Seminary. The Webinar was titled: "How to Survive and Thrive as an Elder." It was led by Rev. Bill McDonald, a retired pastor with 50 years' experience. We continue to share, learn and grow in our faith and service. During service on Feb. 12th, Bob Foster and Curtis Lewis received Elder Emeritus Certificates honoring them for their many years of service. Gloria Boyd The Children Worship and Wonder ministry continues to grow and move forward. We are adding stories to our shelves every Sunday and the children continue to learn and worship through listening to the stories and reenacting the stories themselves. Now that we are past the Christmas season, and before we begin the busy Easter season, we are going to reschedule the greeter trainings. We are going to have a training on March 12 and again on April 30. These trainings will take place during Sunday School in the Children Worship and Wonder room. As we enter the season of Lent the children will be learning the stories of Jesus. They will be working with a Lenten Puzzle for the first Sunday of Lent. After that they will hear the stories of Jesus and the Children, Jesus and Bartimaeus, and Jesus and Zacchaeus. This is all leading us up to Palm Sunday and Easter. I continue to urge you to ask the children of Unity Christian Church about the stories they are hearing from Sunday to Sunday. They will be very eager to tell you about them. Craig Chrisman UCC’s youth and leaders attended Resurrection in Pigeon Forge, TN on January 20-22. We took 10 youth from grades 6-12 along with 4 adults on the adventure. There was lots of laughter, tears, prayers, praising, and togetherness throughout the trip. We started off the weekend by renting a 15-passenger van so that we could all ride together. That was one of the best decisions we made! The youth were able to get to know each other better through that experience along with jamming out and singing together. Our speaker, Mick Veach, challenged us to be Water Walkers and to step out of the boat. The band, Rend Collective, led us with praise songs each session. We had a special “catch phrase” for the weekend too, so if you hear “Welcome to Moe’s” by any of our youth, go ahead and say it back J Our youth (and leaders) came back with many ideas and a fire that is contagious. Overall, a great time was had by all and we look forward to going back next year. Thank you to Unity for the prayers and supporting us to be able to go to Resurrection 2017. Our next Board Meeting is on March 12th. The new 2017 Meeting Schedule for the Board follows: March 12, 2017 May 21, 2017 July 9, 2017 September 10, 2017 November 12, 2017 December 10, 2017 Copies of the minutes and financial reports are placed in the folder in the hallway near the Fellowship Hall doors.
