Stage Four: Production of the Written Assignment
Working from the supervised writing, the student must now produce an essay of 1200-1500 words.
There are TWO STEPS here:
STEP ONE - Optimally, the teacher should have a conference with each student about his/her ideas
for an essay which are shown to be derived from one of the pieces of supervised writing. There
should be some form of communication about these ideas.
STEP TWO - The teacher needs to be involved is in looking at a first draft and providing a written
response (oral if preferred), making some general comments on the potential of the draft to
eventuate in a final essay. However this step does not involve re-shaping the essay for the student, or
editing it.
The students have completed three pieces of supervised writing and their essay topic must be
generated by one of them. The link between the final choice of title and the supervised writing does
not have to be direct, but there must be a recognizable germ of an idea that can be tracked.
When students are deciding on which work to write (and hence which piece of supervised writing to
use as a starting point), it is not the quality of the supervised writing that counts, but the link with the
essay.
Teachers must play a key role in helping the student to develop from the supervised writing a tightly
focused title for the essay. The examples below demonstrate how prompts for the supervised writing
can lead to a precise title for the essay.
Supervised writing prompts and essay titles
Prompt: In what ways are the voices of history and tradition present in the work?
Work: God’s Bits of Wood by Sembène Ousmane
Essay title: Age and wisdom: The significance of Ramatoulaye in God’s Bits of Wood

on your responses to the poems?

Essay title: Allegiance and identity in the poems of Derek Walcott
Prompt: In what ways is memory important in the work?
Work: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Essay title: The significance of memory for Jane in Jane Eyre
Prompt: How do external and internal structures work together?
Work: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
Essay title: Conveying a sense of purpose in Waiting for Godot
Stage 4: Production of the essay: The teacher’s role
The teacher should assist the student to develop a suitably challenging topic that will allow him or her
to show insight into the work chosen for the assignment.
Teachers are encouraged to comment on the first draft, either orally or through notes on a separate
sheet of paper. However, they may not annotate the essay nor assist with subsequent drafts.
Presentation
The essay should be a formal piece of writing with a title and a developed argument. The main
references are likely to be to the literary work chosen for the essay. It is essential that a recognized
reference system is used consistently throughout and that the bibliography includes the full
provenance of the work used, including the edition. Secondary sources may be used, although they
are not essential, and they must also be referenced using the same system and included in the
bibliography.
1,200-1,500 words (Quotations are included in the word count, but footnotes and
bibliographies are not to be included.)
If the word limit is exceeded, the assessment of the reflective statement will be based on the first 400
words and the assessment of the essay on the first 1,500 words.

Prompt: ________________________________________________________________________
Part I Written Assignment Outline
I. Intro Paragraph
A. Introduction of Feodor Dostoevsky and Albert Camus, as well as the two novels, Crime
and Punishment and The Stranger.
B. Thesis: Whereas Dostoevsky perceives faith as the impetus in one's life, Camus perceives
human life as unaffected by faith, yet both authors utilize their novel's characters as a tool to
showcase their contrasting viewpoints on the theme of redemption and the quality of one's life
through faith.
II. Paragraph 1
Topic Sentence: Both authors utilize non-religious protagonists that are offered the chance to
accept religion, to exemplify their view on faith's role, or lack of faith, on the outcome of the
characters lives.
A. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov accepts religion and is redeemed and reborn.
Supports Dostoevsky's viewpoint of redemption through faith.
1.
Quote: “[…] what unbearable sufferings […] those years would hold. But he was
restored to life and he knew it and felt it to the full [of] his renewed being”
(Dostoevsky 464)
2.
Analysis statement
B. In The Stranger, Meursault does not accept religion. Meursault believes it makes no
influence on the outcome of one's life.
Taylor 8
1. For example, the prisoners accept religion, yet this does not change the outcome of
their lives since they are still executed.
2. Quote: “[…] what did [the priest’s] God […] or the fate they think they elect matter to
me when we’re all elected by the same fate” (Camus 121).
III. Paragraph 2
Topic Sentence: Dostoevsky and Camus both employ mother characters to show how their
faith, or lack of, influences the lives of their sons.
A. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov's mother is religious. She acts as a spiritual
encourager for Raskolnikov. Seeing as Raskolnikov later converts religiously, the mother has
a meaningful existence since she helped redeem someone.
1. Quote: “Do you pray to God, Rodya, as you used to do, and do you believe in the mercy
of our Creator and Redeemer? […] I will pray for you” (Dostoevsky 33).
2. Analysis of quote
B. In The Stranger, the mother shows no religious affiliation. Lack of religion has no affect
on Meursault's life. Meursault is still able to live a meaningful life in his abilities in work,
and is still able to be redeemed through acceptance of himself and his actions.
1. Quote: “[…] Maman had never given a thought to religion” (Camus 6).
2. Analysis of quote
(CONTINUE WITH EACH BODY PARAGRAPH)
V. Concluding Paragraph
Opening Sentence: In conclusion, both authors utilize their novel’s characters to showcase their
viewpoint on the redemption and quality of one's existence through faith.
