Iceland -‐‑ Northern Lights Day 1. Arrival Driver/guide from Executive Travel welcomes you at Keflavik airport your stopover in Iceland may well be the best part of your journey. Your every need is anticipated by your hosts. Enjoy the jewels of nature while relishing the best service available anywhere. The drive goes into the countryside to Thingvellir, the site of the original Althing, the actual founding place of the oldest democratic parliament in the world. This area is noted for its spectacular lava formations and being the only place in the world where you can actually see the tectonic plates drift apart. Today Thingvellir is a national park by many considered the most important one where the protected area will always be the property of the Icelandic nation. Walk down the main rift. Research has made it clear that Thingvellir is a natural wonder on an international scale, with the geologic history and the bios stem of Lake Thingvallavatn forming a unique entity. The day will end at the private Mountain resort in the mountains beneath Langjokull glacier. The Trophy Lodge is a small and exclusive resort nestled in the mountains of the Langjokull glacier. This perfectly restored lodge thrives on contradictions; hand-hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, sensuous hot springs beneath shimmering snow banks. Northern lights originate from our sun. During large explosions and flares, huge quantities of solar particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. These plasma clouds travel through space with speeds varying from 300 to 1000 kilometers per second. But even with such speeds (over a million kilometer per hour), it takes these plasma clouds two to three days to reach our planet. When they are closing in on Earth, they are captured by Earth's magnetic field (the magnetosphere) and guided towards Earth's two magnetic poles; the geomagnetic South Pole and the geomagnetic North Pole. Dinner at the Resort. High class dinner 5 – 7 courses. Chef surprise. Tel.: (+30) 210 3231001, Fax: (+30) 210 3231155 www.executivetravel.gr e-mail: [email protected] Day 2. Strokkur Geysir Gullfoss Super Jeep This is probably the most adventurous winter tour that Iceland has to offer. In the morning our team will meet you at your Lodge and brief you on the adventure lying in ahead. We now proceed to Geyser, the "geyser" which gave its name to all other erupting hot springs. You will see one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 90 feet into the air. From there you will go to one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe, Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall). Here you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down in a double-fall into a deep gorge from the glacier Langjokull. Depending on the weather forecast and the current track conditions we will choose the track we will traverse. Likely glacier includes the Langjokull within 250 kilometers from Reykjavík, both of which will provide us with magnificent snow and off-road driving. Your patrol on big 44" tires is standing in front of your hotel ready for you to drive when your guide has found the right path in the snow on the way. Follow this with a delightful lunch in the Icelandic countryside. Then take in Iceland's most popular natural attractions, the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss ("Golden Falls") and the Geyser geothermal area with its erupting hot springs. Experience Iceland's extremes straight away, with a jaunt to Iceland's spectacular interior highlands. Snowmobiling is full action on either glaciers or heaths all depending on weather conditions. Be prepared for extreme adrenaline adventure. Bear in mind that you will see both beautiful sights and get closer to nature. Our clients describe it as a reminder of how small we are comparing to nature. Reaching the edge of the glacier we will deflate our tires enabling the cars to float on the snow covered glacier plateaus where we enjoy breathtaking views over peaks and mountains. Back into the Lodge late afternoon. The trophy Lodge chef painstakingly sources local organic foods; lamb from meadows that spawn fields of boletus and chanterelles, tree-ripe fruit and plump vegetables from our own farm. And the wines to match, replete with first growth Bordeaux, California classics, super Tuscans and lusty Aussie favorites. Gourmet dinner at the Lodge. Northern lights outside and a campfire with hot chocolate Tel.: (+30) 210 3231001, Fax: (+30) 210 3231155 www.executivetravel.gr e-mail: [email protected] Day 3. Volcanos Helicopter to the Volcanos Our eastbound departure from the Lodge takes us into the heart of Iceland seeing the big volcano's like Hekla and Eyjafjallajokull. Around midnight on a quiet winter night 2010 a rift opened up and hot spouting lava came from the core of the earth. The winter skies where glowing red above Eyjafallajokull glacier reflecting the red glow on the glacier. Experience new lava. Depending on the weather we lend by the massive crater Eyjafjallajokull or Fimmvorduhals. Airborne again, we head for the Thorsmork nature reserve, flying by waterfalls, outlet glaciers and a glacial lagoon. Waterfalls one of which you can walk behind, black sandy beaches, mountains and strange lava formations along the way. Solheimajokull glacier tongue extends down from its mother glacier, Myrdalsjokull, Iceland's fourth largest. Ice walk/climbing. Easy walk on crampons up on to the ice field where a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses awaits discovery. Ice climbing and hiking is getting more and more popular as a sport in Iceland, as conditions are quite good most of the year. The Myrdalsjokull (1480m) is the fourth largest glacier with an area of about 590 km². It rests on a very volcanically active massif mountain, which erupted very powerfully in 1918. Quite a few glacier snouts flow down onto the lower lying areas and discharge a great volume of water. Just west of this glacier is another one, much smaller (50 km²), Eyjafjallajokull. Afterwards we fly to the Blue Lagoon Your visit to Iceland ends with a visit to Iceland's most popular attraction, the Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon is a natural geothermal spa surrounded by lava field and black sandy beaches. Have "the swim of your life" enjoying the comfort of the warm lagoon water Drive to the Hotel 101 in the centre in Reykjavik With a commanding presence in the oldest postal code of Reykjavík, 101 hotel neighbors the city's administrative buildings, cultural institutions, main shopping district and the hub of restaurants, bars and nightlife. The 101 hotel communicates refined elegance, with a stylish sense of comfort pervading throughout. The highlight of the decor, however, will be the guests themselves. Whether you are drawn to Reykjavik for business or pleasure, 101 hotel is purely about you Dinner at the Fish Market restaurant Tel.: (+30) 210 3231001, Fax: (+30) 210 3231155 www.executivetravel.gr e-mail: [email protected] Day 4. Exploring this magnificent Leidarendi lava cave and discovering the marvels that the volcano created more than 2000 years ago is a trip that everyone will enjoy.
