FIRSTYEAR INTEREST GROUP (FIG) PEER MENTOR APPLICATION 2010 FIG PEER MENTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION The FIG peer mentor position offers exceptional students the opportunity to be both leaders on campus and mentors to new students participating in the FIG program. Mentors share their knowledge about the many opportunities at UT and serve as guides to campus and academic resources. Mentors assist in co‐facilitating a one‐hour seminar once a week for the fall semester, and are responsible for organizing educational and social activities to help students become better acquainted with each other, faculty members and the university. Mentors will work with a co‐facilitator to plan their FIG seminar, interact with students outside of seminar time, and produce evaluation materials for students. Additional duties, including outreach to prospective students, may also be assigned. Mentoring involves active relationships between mentor and mentees to promote social and academic development. Mentors are encouraged to interact with their FIG students outside of the seminar and are expected to complete 20 hours of mentoring outside of the FIG seminar. During the fall, time commitment is approximately 45 hours each week. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must be undergraduate students with a desire to help new students with their transition to UT. Upon being hired, applicants must provide evidence of United States employability. PREFERRED SKILLS Mentors must be able to effectively communicate with FIG students, faculty, staff and FIG program coordinators. Candidates should be comfortable with public speaking, effective in time management, organized, self‐disciplined, and able to relate to people from diverse backgrounds. Mentors must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Prior experience working with students, facilitating small group discussions, and general knowledge of university policies is preferred. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS New mentors must take a weekly non‐credit course taught in the Spring 2010 semester. Students must demonstrate their knowledge of the topics presented in the course before mentoring in the fall semester. Mentors training requirements include: • • • • Spring 2010 semester: You will be registered for and also attend an 8 week FIG Training Class. The FIG office will register you for this training class (UGS 001) on either Mondays 46 pm or Tuesdays 46 pm. January 30, 2010: FIG Retreat, 11 am‐5 pm April/Early May 2010: Attend a College‐Specific Meeting and meet your Co‐facilitator, TBD August 23, 2010: FIG Mentor Update Meeting, 10 am‐ noon 1 FIG PEER MENTOR COMMITMENTS Please note: Other university positions and activities may conflict with the training sessions. We expect that you will uphold your commitment to this program and attend all training sessions. If you have any questions about your availability or eligibility, please contact the FIG Office. INTERVIEW PROCESS: • All applicants MUST sign up for an interview online when submitting their application. • Final decisions will be made after interviews are complete. Letters will be e‐mailed to all applicants by early January. SPRING SEMESTER • Mentors must attend an 8week training class in the spring 2010 semester. Class begins on Monday, January 25, 2010 (or Tuesday, January 26, 2010) and lasts until mid‐March. The meetings are scheduled from 4 – 6 pm every week. You will be enrolled in a course by the FIG office, so if you prefer a training day please list so on the online application. • Mentors will attend a FIG retreat on Saturday, January 30, 2010 from 11 am 5 pm. • Mentors will attend a College‐specific meeting in Late April/Early May 2010, TBD. FIG PEER MENTOR APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Complete the New Mentor Online Application (submitted using your UTEID) a. Complete essay questions b. Submit a copy of your resume c. Sign up for an interview with the College/School in which you are enrolled 2. Submit TWO completed recommendation forms from a UT faculty/staff member or former teacher/supervisor. Recommendation forms must be in a sealed envelope, signed by your reference. The letter of recommendation may arrive separately from the application and must be received before November 9, 2009 in FAC 1. Incomplete candidate files will not be considered.
