The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) celebrated the first evening of the Year of the Rooster
(28 January) with the splendid 2017 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade
in Tsim Sha Tsui. Themed “Best Fortune. World Party.”, the parade was one of the main HKTB
events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (HKSAR) this year.
The launch ceremony of the parade was performed by Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the
HKSAR Government; Miss Cathy Chu, Commissioner for Tourism; Sir Wayne Leung, HKTB
Board Member and Chairman of the Product and Event Committee; and Mr Ivan Chu, Chief
Executive of title sponsor Cathay Pacific Airways.
Cathay Pacific Airways was the title sponsor of the parade for the 19th consecutive year, and China
Construction Bank (Asia) was the route sponsor for the third year in a row. In addition to
showcasing 10 festive floats, the parade featured 13 local and 13 international performing groups
from 11 countries and regions. There were around 3,000 performers, the largest number in the
event’s history, including world-champion troupes from around the world.
One of the highlights included a first-ever collaboration between two marching bands, Hong
Kong’s own Pegasus Vanguard and the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps from the United States.
Both were champions at the prestigious Drum Corps International World Championships. Also
performing were award-winning performers specialising in artistic cycling, rope skipping and
Latin dancing.
The HKTB also arranged for roving performances presented by nearly 30 performing groups to
warm up the crowd along the parade route starting at 6pm. Close to 350 local youngsters from 15
local schools acted as “Lucky Buddies”, giving out about 13,000 festive gift packs as an
expression of good wishes.
To raise awareness of Hong Kong as one of the best places to celebrate Chinese New Year among
worldwide audiences, the HKTB continued to provide satellite and fibre transmission of the parade
1
to global television stations, major newswires and international cruise liners for live broadcast.
Hot on the heels of the 2017 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade is a
public display of the floats from the 2nd day until the 16th day of Chinese New Year (29 January to
12 February) in Tai Po Lam Tsuen. On 29 and 30 January, various international performing
troupes will grace venues, including pentahotel Hong Kong, Kowloon in San Po Kong, Lee Tung
Street in Wan Chai and Temple Mall South in Wong Tai Sin, with their entertaining shows.
