Manor Country Club is very proud of the generosity shown
by the attendees of the Holly Ball. Much to our delight
Sergeant Cisneros’ vehicle was filled to capacity with toys.
Donations to ‘Toys for Tots’ has been a tradition at Manor for
several years. This year we were at full capacity with 402
people attending the Holly Ball. It was a great success!

Board Actions
The Board approved the following resolution to be made in the
audited financial statement to reflect the current use of the operating profits (losses), membership fees and the Club’s various assessments: “We propose that the capital improvements assessments portion of membership fees, community special dues, practice facility assessment and the monthly capital improvement assessment be designated for the acquisition of capital improvements
into a fund to be known as the “Capital Improvement Fund”. All
other funds, from whatever source, are treated as undesignated and
are available for use in the general operations of the Club. In the
event that capital expenditures during a year shall exceed the accumulated balance in the Capital Improvement Fund, the excess shall
be deducted from undesignated funds. Capital Improvements shall
be defined as those expenditures identified as “Capital Expenditures” in the monthly financial statements. We further state that
this change shall be effective for the year beginning November 1,
2002 and we instruct our auditors to reclassify our Net Asset Allocations as required for the Fiscal Years 2003, 2004 and 2005 financial statements to reflect these changes”

tions. The past three years were arguably one of the toughest
membership recruiting environments in the Club’s history and the
job that Joe, Pat and Tim did, along with their respective committee members, was remarkable and will be looked at historically as
a time that the Board of Governors and the Membership Committee stepped up when they were needed most and made a potentially bad situation a successful one for the Club.

help place the Club back on sound financial footing for the future.

Golf Course Construction News
By Randall S. Pinckney, Golf Course Manager
Winter has arrived and the championship 18-hole golf course was
closed on December 4, 2005 for the winter months. It will reopen
in spring 2006 for Manor Country Club’s first official golf season
on the new golf course. During the last two weeks we were open,
if you played the golf course you may have noticed that the
greens were not nearly as fast as they were the first month we
were open. The reason for this is colder temperatures cause the
greens to freeze and the turf-grass to go dormant. When the
greens are frozen or frosty we cannot mow or roll them due to the
severe injury and turf loss that would occur. When the grass begins to go dormant at the onset of freezing temperatures it stops
growing and stores all of its energy to make it through the winter
months. Any injury to the turf-grass during the winter months
would expose the vital parts of the grass plant to winter desiccation and turf loss would occur, due to the plants inability to repair
itself. This is also why it is imperative to close during the winter
months to avoid turf damage or loss from winter play and turf
dormancy. Once soil temperatures reach a consistent 60 degree
temperature the grass will begin growing actively again. This
usually occurs around the 2nd or 3rd week in April.
Membership Totals Up as 2005 Ends
By Dan Dionisio, Membership Committee Chairman
As 2005 comes to a close, the new Membership Committee is
projecting that the Club’s membership totals will increase for the
first time in over six years. As Joe Muscarella and Pat Marsden’s
tenure as Membership Committee Co-Chairs came to an end in
the Fall, the Club continued to benefit from the work they did and
the foundation they laid over the previous three years that resulted
in new families joining during a difficult financial period for the
Club. For the past three years and under the guidance of the CoChairs and their Committee, Tim Fahmy, Bill Hughes and Carolyn Kearns, approximately 200 new members agreed to join the
Club in the midst of a poor economic environment and a golf
course that was closed during major and much needed renova-
Once the golf course was closed my staff and I heavily topdressed
the greens and tees with sand. This sand will act like a blanket
from the harsh winter winds. We also applied plant protectants
which also aid in the plants survival through the winter months.
We then force compressed air through our irrigation system to
push all the water out of our pipes and sprinkler heads to prevent
freezing and/or cracking. We will also begin other projects while
closed such as extra drainage, sodding, tree pruning etc. as
weather permits. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday
season and new year.

MISGA Christmas Holiday Luncheon
By Bill Gordon
Manor Club hosted the 13th annual MISGA Christmas Holiday
Luncheon on December 7th. Manor’s MISGA Rep, Roy Butrum,
hosted the lunch, and this was Roy’s farewell event as he has
completed his three-year term.
Manor’s Men’s Senior News
By Dick Hunt
Over one hundred MISGA guests sat down to another great lunch
prepared by our excellent Chef and his staff.
Dan Rease wins first annual Donatelli Trophy for
Manor Senior of the Year!
At the December 7th MISGA Division IV Christmas luncheon,
Jim Donatelli, Vice President of the Manor Senior Golf Association, presented Dan Rease the first annual Donatelli Trophy as
“Manor Senior of the Year”. For each of our six tournaments
during this past year’s golfing season, points were awarded to
participants based on their team’s order of finish in the event.
The senior with the most accumulated points for the six events
was declared “Senior of the Year”. Since the competition was
very close, we doubled the points for the final event and Dan prevailed. The permanent trophy is on display in the Trophy Room.
Congratulations Dan and thanks Jim for the idea of the trophy and
for constructing it.
2005 Award to Roy Butrum by Earl Gayler
A number of awards were given, namely to Roy Butrum, who
was honored as Division IV MISGA Rep of the year 2005. Without a course at Manor, Roy was able to have over twenty golf
events played within Division IV and other divisions. Not an
easy thing to do. Between MISGA events and Manor Senior
events, the seniors played almost thirty golf tournaments. A well
deserved award for Roy.
2005 Manor Awards:
Left to Right: Jim Donatelli, Dan Rease and Dick Hunt
Thanks to all the seniors who responded to our letter requesting a
donation for a gift to Everett Gianiny. Your generosity and enthusiastic response indicates the admiration we all have for
Everett. We sent him a card with the names of all the contributors
along with a check from the Manor seniors.
2005 Hastings Award
Left to Right: CJ Myers, Paul Kaiser and Charlie Fieldhouse
C.J. Myers of Manor and Charlie Fieldhouse from Piney Branch
Golf Club, were awarded the “Hastings Jacket” for their many
years of outstanding service to MISGA. C.J. is currently MISGA
Tournament Chairman, and has held numerous chairmanship positions over many, many years.
Please note: The costs to run MISGA have increased and its dues
have accordingly been raised from $5.00 to $10.00 beginning in
2006. Your bill in March for senior dues will be $25.00, an increase of $5.00, to account for this change.
Manor senior, Dan Rease, was awarded the “Donatelli Trophy”
for the year 2005. The “Donatelli Trophy” is given to the senior
player of the year, who accumulated the most points in senior
tournament play. Congratulations to Dan! Congratulations to all!

Professionally Speaking
an opportunity to play at their desired time. This system, which
has various forms, has been used by other clubs and found to be
not only highly successful but also much fairer.
By Larry Velten
While we still have to travail over some cold, wind and snow,
Spring is not too far in the distance. In a short time, although
Winter seems to last forever, a full season of golf awaits us on our
new course. But before that, I would like to highlight and briefly
discuss one area of importance “securing tee times”.
Manor CC A-Team information:
Any members interested in competing on the Manor CC Men’s
A-Team please contact Bryan Borda at [email protected]
with the following information: (1) e-mail address; (2) phone
numbers; and (3) handicap. A meeting will be scheduled in
January and notification sent to all interested members.
Tee times for during the week, Tuesday through Friday, may be
reserved one week in advance by calling the Golf Shop. This was
done for our fall play in 2005 and was enthusiastically received.
Without question, this allows a player to better plan their day at
the Club.
Manor Women’s Golf – 18 Holes
For weekend and holiday play, a new system of making tee time
reservations will be in place. This process is called a card system
By Dot Wiliamowski
A foursome or threesome may request a tee time a week in advance by filling out a card in the Golf Shop. For example, on
Saturday a group may fill out a card for the following Saturday
and on Sunday for the next Sunday. On the card, which will be
color coordinated for either Saturday or Sunday, a player will
need to provide the following information: (1) the players in the
group; (2) the desired tee time, remember for next year tee time
intervals will be at ten minutes. i.e. 9:00 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. to 9:20
a.m. etc.; (3) provide an e-mail address; and (4) sign the card.
The Manor Women’s Golf Association membership meeting
and elections were held Thursday, November 3, at 1:00 p.m.
Elected to the 2005-2006 Executive Board were:
President – Bonnie Palatucci
1st Vice President – Geri Olson
2nd Vice President – Linda Andrews
Secretary – Lisa Hofstetter
Treasurer – Phyllis Taylor
The Montgomery-Prince Georges annual luncheon was held at
Montgomery Village Friday November 4.
In order to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding it is strongly
recommended that a player in the group fill out the card and deposit the card in the appropriate box.
November 9 – The Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association held their end of season meeting and luncheon at Argyle
Country Club. Marion Booth of Manor was honored. She was
presented the WDCGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a beautiful engraved silver medal.
Here’s a brief summary highlighting some of her accomplishments and milestones: Marion Brown Booth
Marion’s participation in golf competitions spans seven decades,
from the 1930’s to the present. One of her first WDCGA competitions that she participated in was held in 1935 at Beaver Dam
(the old PG and now Woodmore CC), which she won. It was
called the “Duffer” tournament.
On Wednesday evening the cards for both Saturday and Sunday
will be pulled. The cards will be ordered by tee times requested.
Next the tee times will be assigned based on two criteria: (1)
placement as near to the time you requested and (2) the frequency
that the group has played at that requested time.
Tee times will be posted by 10:10 a.m. on Thursday. Any unfilled tee times as of Thursday can be reserved by calling the Golf
Shop or in person. Obviously, membership status as to use of the
golf course will apply.
This system has many advantages over the old way characterized
by the luck of getting through on Wednesday morning. This new
procedure will enable the membership an equal chance to reserve
a tee time. And by using a frequency of play all players will have

at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. In the same year
she was a Medalist in the Middle Atlantic Women’s Championship held at Indian Spring CC. She lost in the semi-final round,
on the 19th hole. In 1936 she won the Corby Cup for the first
time. As the story goes, she had one of the later tee times, playing towards the end of the field. Many assumed that a certain
Mrs. Marr would be the winner, who shot a 76 and was sitting in
one of the white lawn chairs along with many others, waiting for
the field to complete the tournament. A caddie declared that
there was some young kid out on the course shooting lights out.
That KID was Marion who turned in a score of 75, beating out
Mrs. Marr. She won the Corby Cup again, 32 years later in 1968.
Ironically enough, she sunk a 10-foot putt on the first hole of a
playoff defeating a fellow Manor member, a youngster by the
name of Pat Tyrrell. In 1937, she played in the Mason Dixon
Championship losing to Patty Berg, 4&3. She went on to win the
consolation flight. In 1938, she had a very remarkable year.
Locally
June, she won the WDCGA Championship, defeating Helen Dittweiler. October she won the Middle Atlantic Championship at
Rodgers Forge Club in Baltimore again defeating Helen Dittweiler 2&1. She set the course record (77) in doing so. Helen
shot 79 and later turned Pro.
Nationally
At the 43rd Women’s Amateur held in Darien, Connecticut she
defeated Glena Collett Vare, a five time U.S. Championship and
Curtis Cup Team Member. She lost her next match on the 23rd
hole to Maureen Orcott Crew, another member of the Curtis Cup
Team. She also had the opportunity to play with the great athlete, Babe Didrikson Zaharis.
Provide information, win court time
It’s a new year and time for resolutions. The resolution at the
Tennis Shop is to get updated information for all members.
Our goal is to acquire as many ways to contact our members as
possible, including current cell, work and home numbers and email addresses. Cell numbers are of particular importance, especially when we’re looking for subs on short notice and want to be
able to reach people quickly.
A form to provide this information is included in this mailing.
THEN
Please fill it out and drop in the collection box that is located in
the Tennis Shop next time you’re in to play. The forms can also
be mailed to the club to the attention of the Tennis Shop.
As an incentive, Ken is offering a prize for your cooperation in
this request.
On Feb. 1, a drawing from all the completed forms will be held.
One lucky player will win 90 minutes of free court time in the
bubble. That’s a free game for you and your friends.
The deadline for entries is January 31st.
Winter Juniors
In the holiday rush, you may have missed the forms so here’s a
junior clinics reminder.
The Winter I session of the Friday clinics begins Jan. 6 and run
through Feb. 3, with Feb. 10 as a makeup date if needed.
Check with the shop about space availability. The 5-7 age group
meets in the bubble from 4:15 to 5 p.m. at a cost of $59. The 8-10
and 11-14 age groups meet from 5 to 6 p.m. at a cost of $79.
The Winter II session will run Feb. 17 through March 17, with
March 24 as the makeup date. The times and costs are the same.
Registration forms have already been mailed to homes, but additional copies are available in the shop.
She was the Guest of Honor at the NBC-WMAL closing day
tournament, an affiliated WDCGA event. She was also honored
at a Testimonial Dinner held at Manor Country Club, receiving a
diamond and sapphire ring and bracelet.
Fitness
1939 – She won the Phyllis Keeler Miller Tournament, which
had 123 competitors, in a playoff. She shot an 81. She has won
numerous local Cup Tournaments, far too many to mention.
By Jennifer Hughes, Fitness Director
Congratulations to Annie Gibala
the winner of the “FALL” Body For Life Challenge!
Club Championships
In the years spanning 1936-2002 Marion won the Women’s
Championship at Manor Club NINE times. She was a finalist
this year and lost on the 19th hole to Barbara DiMaio. She also
won the Women’s Championship at Indian Spring Country Club
numerous times in the early days of her career, often holding
both titles in the same years.
Annie lost 10 pounds and lowered her percent body fat to 22
percent. (The healthy range for women is between 18-24% and
for men between 10-17%). What’s great about this success story
is that Annie is our youngest Body For Life Winner. Not only
was she busy this fall meeting college application deadlines, but
she also participated on the varsity golf team, wrote for her
school newspaper and worked at the Olney Golf park, all while
eating and exercising as the program prescribed. Way to go!
Most importantly, she feels great, has more energy and will head
off to college with the knowledge and experience of how to live a
healthy lifestyle. Oh, and she receives a $200 cash prize, perhaps
a new exercise outfit will be in order.
She attended George Washington University and the University
of Maryland. She took time off from competitive golf, while she
raised her two sons and two daughters.
More recently, Marion was the 2002 Maryland State Amateur
Flight winner. In 2005 she was the Super Senior Champion in
the Maryland State Senior Championship.
A big congratulations to all our Body For Life finishers. Together the group lost over 300 pounds. I encourage you to take
this challenge in 2006. It can be life changing.
She is still going strong, and is an inspiration to all of us.
November 13, Sunday – 3 to 5 – at the Club; Everett Gianiny’s
Retirement Reception was delightful. At that time Bonnie Palatucci presented a gift to him. Thanks to all who participated. We
will miss him terribly.
Next BFL challenge will begin January 15th. Give it a try. You
won’t be disappointed.

Garden Club News
By Dr. Rosalie Barr
The growing, and planting, season came to
an abrupt end this year with frequent snows
and persistent cold. Actually, it's a nice

weather, to mark for late winter pruning the
dead branches we noted when the leaves
were still there, less we forget by February.
Then it'll be January thaw time; don't forget
to push the crowns of the perennials that
tend to heave back into the soil. Look especially at your coralbells (heucheras). Look for and ease drainage
problems. It's also a good time to get rid of winter perennial
weeds while the ground is temporally softened. Remember how
crisp and clear the weather can get, how enjoyable the songs of the
birds can be? What a glorious time to pull the ivy out of your trees
and clearly see the invading honeysuckle when everything else is
dormant. (Protect yourself from inconspicuous poison ivy as you
work). Give your compost pile a turn or two to let air in and distribute moisture from the melting snow. When, inevitably, the
storms come, we can curl up with the spring catalogues and fantasize how beautiful we will make our gardens next season!
