Principal’s Message
Thank you for your overwhelming support of the Annual Terry Fox Walk. We are currently counting
monies and in the next memo we will let you know the final amount. This has been a busy week for our
school; we held our Terry Fox Walk on Monday afternoon, we had a cartooning artist here on Tuesday
and our Grade 4-6 students will be participating in Sports Fest on Friday. Keeping Active won’t be
hard this week!
School Council
We have 3 vacant parent seats for School Council. Thank you to the 7 people who have volunteered
themselves for school council. Please read the following information on each parent candidate.
Attached to this memo is a ballot form, please follow the directions on the top of the ballot and
return to school by Tuesday, October 8th.
Each household will receive 1 ballet, we are unable to provide replacement ballots.
Here are our candidates!
1. Janice Burton
My name is Janice Burton and I'm seeking a position on school council. My husband and I moved to
Flatrock in 2001 and are raising three boys. In raising these three boys, I have a huge vested
interest in the level and quality of education that our children receive. Since my oldest son started
here at Cape St. Francis, the quality of instruction and teaching has been exceptional! Now that my
youngest boy has entered kindergarten, it has given me the opportunity to divert some of my time,
ideas and energy into a position such as school council. Through my field of work at the airport, I
have developed great interpersonal and communication skills and I feel very comfortable working in a
team setting and sharing ideas. I would love to have the opportunity to help direct the continued
growth and development of our school.
Thank You
2. Kara Connors
My name is Kara Connors and I am interested in becoming one of the parent representatives to the
Cape St. Francis School Council. I am a parent of two daughters. My six year old daughter is in Grade
One and I have a three year old daughter who will also attend CSF. The teacher to student ratio is
key to the quality of education our children will receive. Currently I work as Constituency Assistant to
Dale Kirby, MHA St. John’s North, NDP Education Critic. Every day in my job, I help people address
their issues and would bring those problem solving and advocacy skills to this position. Recently, I was
elected Secretary of the Pouch Cove Recreation Commission. I also was involved in organizing and
served as Chairperson for the All Candidates Meeting during the 2013 Municipal Election in Pouch
Cove. I am humbly asking for your support. If you have any questions please call me at 335 7222 or
email me at [email protected].
Thank You.
3. Lori Green
Hi my name is Lori Green and I am putting forth my name for one of the three positions on School
Council this year. I currently have 2 daughters attending Cape St. Francis Elementary. My oldest
daughter, Claire, is in Grade 5 and my youngest daughter, Ceara, is in Grade 2. I have volunteered with
the school in several different ways over the last few years with events such as Spring Fair, Teacher
Appreciation week, and chaperoning fieldtrips with each of my children’s classes. I also volunteer once
monthly for Hot Dog day. I feel I would be an asset to the School Council and I have time to dedicate
to this position. I want to become part of the efforts involved with the fundraising and educational
needs of Cape St. Francis while keeping the community advised on those matters. Thank you for your
consideration.
Thank You
4. Elizabeth Gruchy
My name is Elizabeth Gruchy and I have 2 children attending Cape St. Francis. Abigail is in Grade 3
and Sarah is in Grade 1. I have been in the field of nursing for the past 18 years and have lived with my
husband and children in Pouch Cove for the past 10 years. School life is very important to me and my
husband and being a part of my children’s lives and helping them and their education is what is most
important to me. I have volunteered with the school in several capacities for the last number of years
and I am now asking for your support to become a parent representative on our school council.
Thank You for your Support
5. Trina Hillier
My name is Trina Hillier and my son Thomas, is a grade 5 student in Mrs. Facey's class. My son and I
both moved to Pouch Cove at the end of the last school year so as you can appreciate we are very new
to the area. I work at Adventure Place Childcare as the Operator and I thrive on children learning
new things daily and achieving new goals. I am a very positive person who enjoys working with others
and assisting and lending a hand where needed. I am very much devoted to both my son and his school
and am very active in any events that take place. I would love the opportunity to become part of the
council team to assist in any way I can in helping achieve goals and accomplishments throughout
the school year. This would also allow me the perfect opportunity to meet new people and continue
doing things I love such as working with/for children and their learning achievements.
Many Thanks
6. Corrina Martin
My name is Corrina Martin and I am very interested in becoming a parent representative on the school
council. I am married to Brian Martin and have lived in Flatrock for the past 15 years. We have 2
boys who attend Cape St Francis (grade 2 and 6). I have been volunteering with Cape St Francis
School since my oldest started kindergarten, whether it be hotdog duty, school field trips or to
simply help out in the classroom. I want to take this volunteering to another level with the school and
be a voice who represents parents. I have always believed that students will succeed when parents
have a positive attitude about the importance of receiving a good education. We already have a good
school, with good educators, and good students. Let me be a parent voice who works with the school
council in helping to keep our school moving in the right direction.
Thank You
7. Trina Martin
Hello Parents of Cape St. Francis Elementary School community. My name is Trina Martin and I

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Thanksgiving weekend is just around the corner and families will be joining together to enjoy the
celebration. Unfortunately some families won’t have the resources to cook the traditional turkey
dinner. From October 7th to 11th students are being asked to bring non-perishable food items to
school to help support the Community Food Sharing Association.
Bussing
In the next couple of weeks there will be assigned seating on the bus. We believe this will help
enhance organization and safety on the bus.
New Recess Menu Items
Beginning Monday, October 7th students will be able to order 2 new items from our canteen; GoGo
Squeez Fruit Snacks for .50 cents and Fruit To Go Sticks for .50 cents. These items are in keeping
with the Healthy Schools Policy and promote our Allergy Aware School.
Lockdown/ Secure Schools Drills
As you are aware from past communications, students at Cape St. Francis practice safe schools
programs that include Fire Drills and Secure School/ Lockdown procedures. These protocols are
designed to make our schools safe places to be in the event of an emergency. We have already had 4
Fire Drill practices. We are planning to have our first Secure School/ Lockdown practice in the
coming week. Your child’s teacher has already discussed Secure School or Lockdown procedures with
your child. Please encourage any questions your children may have and ensure them, as we will, that
this is simply another way to practice being safe.
Accordion Group
We are currently in the process of recruiting grade 5 and 6 students for a beginner accordion group.
The group will be meeting at lunch time on Day 4 for approximately 25 minutes. The current plan is to
use the full size accordion. Students will have to provide their own instrument and be responsible for
it. Our first lesson is planned for: October 8 th, 2013, 12:10-12:35. Should you have any questions
please contact Mr. Barry or Ms. Percy.
Skating Memo
Skating will begin the week of October 24th. A memo regarding the specific details will come out
within the next week.
Cross Country Participants
Congratulations to all those students in Grade 4-6 who participated in the Cross Country Races at
Pippy Park on Saturday. Good luck to those students who plan to participate this coming Saturday.
