Newsletter
Dear Parents,
We have had some lovely spring like weather this week so the children have been able to take full
advantage of the field and of Article 31 – the right to relax and play and join in a variety of activities’
Parent Interviews
Thank you to those who have already returned slips requesting appointments to
discuss their children’s progress with staff. It is really important that we get to
have these discussions with everyone and, as always, we will do our very best to
accommodate parent needs. An afternoon or after-school appointment is offered,
and where neither of these can be met, please contact your child’s teacher directly
to agree a mutually convenient time. We look forward to seeing you next week.
Shakespeare Week 20th – 24th March
We are celebrating Shakespeare week by ‘creating a play in a day’ with ‘Splats
Entertainment’ company. All of our KS2 children will work with the company during the
day on Friday, culminating in a performance of the play Macbeth. As suggested on the
lettter, it would be great if the children could wear black clothing on the day as it makes
the performance ‘cleaner’ . There are still some tickets available if you would like to
come and watch the performance on Friday afternoon at 2:15pm.
Comic Relief – 24th March
This year, Comic Relief clashes with our play in a day activity with KS 2 and
we have also just completed an exceptionally well supported fundraising event
with NSPCC. For these reasons we have decided not to do a whole school
activity. However, as we are asking KS2 children to try to come to school
dressed in black for the Shakespeare play, we are happy to suggest that KS1
children may enjoy having a non-uniform/dress-up day. Parents may make a
donation if they wish which will be paid over to Comic Relief.
Celebrate Earth Hour – in school Friday 24th March and at home on Saturday 25th
March
We will be taking part in Earth Hour next Friday afternoon by switching off as many
electrical appliances as possible. Don’t forget, if you would like to sign up to Earth Hour
yourselves, please visit http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk/about_earth_hour. Join in at home
by switching off for an hour from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday night.
‘Beat the Street’ Campaign
Beat the Street is a fun, free, real-life walking and cycling game which is an initiative
delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of Durham County Council. It aims to
encourage children and families to exercise more, in a fun and exciting way. You can
earn points and win prizes by tapping special cards or fobs onto sensors known as
Beat Boxes as you travel around. Beat the Street will turn Ferryhill and Chilton into a
game where you need to locate Beat Boxes on lamp-posts and record your journeys.
The beatboxes will be activated from 29th March and tapping two Beat Boxes within
an hour records your distance. How far can you go?! The children will be given a fob
and 1 adult card. Extra cards can be obtained from Ferryhill Town Hall.
EYFS Mother’s Day Tea – 23rd March and Lunch 23rd and 28th at
school
EYFS (Nursey and Reception Class) would like to invite mums (and
carers and grans) to a Mother’s Day Tea on the 23rd March. You will be
able to work with your child, making cards and gifts and enjoy a cup of
tea or coffee. Nursery will hold theirs at 11 am and at 2: 30pm and
Reception Class will hold theirs at 2:30pm. It would be lovely to see you
there to celebrate Mother’s Day.
If you have returned the Mother’s Day lunch slip, you should have already had confirmation of your
invitation to join us for lunch on either 23rd (KS1) or 28th March (KS2). If you haven’t had a confirmation
slip and would still like to join us, please let us know and we will do our best to fit you in.
Y4 Class Assembly – 29th March
Year 4 have had a busy term with lots of things going on that they would like to share with you. Friends
and family are invited to join us on Wednesday 29th March at 9.30am for their class assembly. Hope you
are able to attend!

about activities on offer during the Easter break. Activities will be

Easter Egg competition – early warning! Friday 7th April
Get your creative thinking caps on because Easter just wouldn’t be Easter without
our eggciting annual Egg Decorating Competition! We are delighted that our
friends from the Castle Residents Association are again providing the prizes
for each class. We always have some eggcellent entries and I’m looking
forward to seeing your fabulous ideas for egg decorations again this year.
Look out for more details in the next newsletter.
Fingerprint Challenge
This week has been National Science Week and Key Stage 2 have been involved in a national fingerprint
challenge. They've all had a brilliant time collecting their fingerprints and analysing them closely to see if
they have whorls, arches and loops. They've also had the opportunity to experience how using
fingerprints can solve a crime. Each class was the setting for a crime scene and the children worked out
who did it! I'm sure the children have already told you all about it! We will collate the fingerprints and
send off the numbers to be added to the national total to see if the UK can beat the world record in the
number of fingerprints collected in a week!
Year 5 Easter Journey - 29th March
Year 5 will be visiting the Methodist Chapel on Wednesday 29th March to learn all about the Easter
Journey. Children will listen to the story of Easter and enjoy an arts and craft session as well.
Easter Disco
D.J. John is back again on Thursday 6th April for an end of term disco. The disco
starts at 6.00pm until 7.30pm and admission will be £1 per child. Younger brothers
and sisters welcome as long as parents stay to supervise! Refreshments will be on sale
too.
