teacher guide: administering benchmarks

TEACHER GUIDE: ADMINISTERING BENCHMARKS
Three benchmark tests are embedded in Imagine Math. Benchmark 1 is the first activity
students complete in Imagine Math. Benchmarks 2 and 3 allow educators to monitor
progress at mid-year and track overall progress in math understanding at the end of the
year. The tests are designed to allow for flexible test administration at any time within the
school year.
TEST DELIVERY
As a teacher or school administrator, you will use the Benchmark Roster to verify student
eligibility status and initiate benchmark tests for eligible students in all classrooms that
you manage. District administrators do not have access to the Benchmark Roster.
To go to the Benchmark Roster, go to the (1) STUDENTS (teachers) or (1) USERS (school
administrators) menu in the top navigation and click (2) BENCHMARK ROSTER.

TEST DELIVERY (CONT’D)
You can (1) FILTER the benchmark roster for a specific classroom and/or eligibility status
or (2) SEARCH for a specific student. Students in multiple classrooms will appear in
filtered results for each classroom in which they are enrolled. If you have a student in your
classroom who is also in one or more other classrooms, you should coordinate with the
teacher(s) from the other classroom(s) regarding who will administer the benchmark test
to the student.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
On the Benchmark Roster, student eligibility is Shown as Eligible, Not Eligible, Not Started,
Started or Complete. When students are not eligible, you can click the (1) QUESTION
indicator next to the status to see the reason for ineligibility.
You can expect to see the following eligibility statuses.
Student is eligible to take a
benchmark test.
Teacher/school administrator clicked “Start
Benchmark” for the student on the given
date, but the student has not yet begun the
benchmark test.
Student began the benchmark test and last
submitted an answer to a benchmark test
problem on the given date.

student has not yet taken Benchmark 1.
Student is not eligible because the
student has recently taken a benchmark
test. Student will be eligible on the future
given date.

ASSIGNING BENCHMARK TESTS
To assign benchmark tests to eligible students using the Benchmark Roster, click the
(1) CHECK BOX next to students’ names, then click the (2) ASSIGN BENCHMARK button.
You can select more than one student at a time from the pool of students eligible for
either the first or second benchmark. If students are not actively using Imagine Math at
the time of benchmark assignment, they will be presented with the benchmark test the
next time they log in. If students are actively using Imagine Math at the time of benchmark
assignment, they will be presented with the benchmark test when they complete their
current math problem.
To assign benchmarks to large numbers of students, you can select all eligible students
on the page by clicking the (3) CHECK BOX in the table header row for the benchmark
you wish to administer. If you would like to select all eligible students across your entire
roster, click the ‘Select all eligible’ (4) LINK for the benchmark you wish to administer. If you
change your mind, click the link to select just the eligible students on the page.

UNASSIGNING BENCHMARK TESTS
If you have unintentionally assigned a benchmark test, or reverse your decision about
benchmark assignment, you can easily “undo” this action as long as a student has not
started a test. This is known as unassigning a benchmark test. Only Benchmarks 2 and 3
can be unassigned.
As a teacher or school administrator, you can use the Benchmark Roster to unassign a
benchmark test when student eligibility is shown as Not Started. Student benchmark tests
can only be unassigned one-at-a-time. You will see a link next to a student’s benchmark
eligibility on the Benchmark Roster when unassigning is permitted.
To unassign a student’s benchmark test, click the (1) UNASSIGN link.
A box will appear asking you to confirm your choice. Click the (2) YES button. Click the No
button to return to the Benchmark Roster without unassigning the benchmark test.
Once you have successfully unassigned a benchmark test, a confirmation message will
appear on the screen. You will need to re-assign the benchmark test to students whose
test has been unassigned.

INVALIDATING BENCHMARK TESTS
In some cases, you may need to stop students mid-test and start them over, or re-test
students who have already completed a benchmark test. This is known as invalidating a
benchmark test. Only Benchmarks 2 and 3 can be invalidated.
As a teacher or school administrator, you can use the Benchmark Roster to invalidate a
benchmark test while students are in progress or up to 96 hours after benchmark test
completion. After 96 hours, benchmark test results are permanent. Student benchmark
tests can only be invalidated one-at-a-time. You will see a link next to a student’s
benchmark eligibility on the Benchmark Roster when invalidation is permitted.
To invalidate a student’s benchmark test progress or results, click the (1) INVALIDATE link.
A box will appear asking you to confirm your choice. Click the (2) YES button. Click the No
button to return to the Benchmark Roster without invalidating the benchmark test.
Once you have invalidated a benchmark test, a confirmation message will appear on the
screen. You will need to re-assign the benchmark test to students whose progress or
results have been invalidated.
