A program of Weber State University, Child & Family Studies Department. Funding is made possible by a grant from the
Utah Department of Workforce Services, Office of Child Care.
Choosing a Preschool
The first years of a child’s life are a crucial developmental period.
Children who are nurtured and stimulated during these years are much
more prepared for formal reading and math and are more likely to have the
social skills they will need when it’s time for kindergarten. Parents are a
child’s first teachers, but early childhood education programs are also
important.
We at Care About Childcare @ Weber State, have gathered this list of
possible preschool programs that may be of interest to you and your
children. We hope that you will take the time to choose a program that best
fits the needs of your child.
On the following pages we have provided some helpful information and
checklists to help you identify a high-quality early education program.
Please let us know if we can be of any further service to you.
Utah Preschool Information
Preschools in Utah may operate legally with a business license from the
city they are located in. To receive a business license a preschool program
must pay an annual fee and may or may not have a fire inspection
(depending on the city).
Preschool programs in Utah however, are not required to be
licensed by the Department of Health. They can voluntarily obtain a
license if they choose to do so.
Licensing through the Department of Health is required for child care
programs. If you would like a list of child care programs in your area you can
call us at 801-626-7837 or 1-888-970-0101.
CAC @ Weber State does not recommend or endorse any
preschool program. This list is merely a courtesy listing for those
seeking a preschool program. It is the parent’s responsibility to
research and choose the best program for their child.
1
The following guidelines can help you identify highquality early education programs:
Preschool programs should focus on children:


Watch to see that children interact with other children and adults, so they can
build healthy relationships.
Ask about the curriculum, which should include a variety of activities appropriate
for the children’s ages and needs.
Preschool programs should have qualified staff:


The staff should have the educational background to promote your child’s
learning and development. Ask what degrees and training teachers have.
Ask how long teachers and staff have been with the program. Teachers that stay
in the program longer are more able to focus their attention on the children and
establish bonds with them.
Preschool programs should build relationships with families:

Program staff should work with families to meet their child’s needs. Ask how
information and concerns are communicated between staff and families.
Health and Safety:










All children in care are up-to-date on required immunizations.
All staff have had a background check
Toys and materials are cleaned and disinfected regularly.
Children are directly supervised at all times.
Parents are allowed to stay or visit any time their child is attending.
A stocked first-aid kit is available.
Emergency numbers are posted near the phone.
There is always at least one adult present who is trained in first aid & CPR at any
given time.
Outdoor play areas are protected from the street and other dangers.
Climbing equipment, slides and swings are securely anchored to the ground.
Cushioning material such as wood chips, and, or rubber mats are used under
and around climbing equipment, slides, and swings.
2
The Utah Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines acknowledge:
Developmentally appropriate practices
“A developmentally appropriate classroom offers a variety of learning opportunities through play
and hands-on exploration. During play, young children use hands-on exploration and sensory
learning in a very important way; they confidently test new knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere, relate
intuitively to existing knowledge, and store that information for future use. A successful learner of any
age identifies new information that is relevant, connects it to existing knowledge, focuses to apply it to
new situations, and becomes ready to learn more. An appropriate early childhood classroom
establishes curriculum goals that focus on making sense of the concrete world.” (“Beyond the Journal:
Young Children on the Web,” National Association for the Education of Young Children, July 2005.)
Growth in the preschool years
The preschool years are marked by a period of rapid growth and development. During this time,
children’s natural curiosity engages them in making sense of their environment by observing,
questioning, experiencing, and experimenting. The rapid growth and development that occur during
this period are the foundation for all later learning.
Although all children develop at different rates, some may have developmental delays which may
improve with early intervention. If you suspect that your child has a delay in any area, contact your
health provider and your local school district’s special needs office.
Children are individuals
Children are valuable individuals with unique experiences, interests, and abilities. They make
important contributions to their families, schools, and communities. Children enter school with a
variety of experiences, knowledge, abilities, learning styles, cultures, languages and expectations.
Instruction needs to continually address the whole child in a well balanced manner and assure that
children have daily opportunities to participate in optimal learning experiences.
Children learn best through enjoyable interaction
Play is a child’s work. Through active play, children learn social skills from each other, language
skills as they communicate, mathematical skills as they count and explore their environment, and
physical skills as they run and jump. Children’s enthusiasm and love of learning are maintained when
the learning environment provides an ample choice of developmentally appropriate activities, with
adequate time to integrate new learning. When learning experiences incorporate direct instruction to
facilitate learning, they should be designed to capitalize on children’s natural curiosity and desire to
learn.

Our focus is teaching a balanced spectrum of early childhood education. Each
program that we offer has distinct activities appropriate for the child’s age and
developmental level. The preschool curriculum includes a mixture of both
NAEYC and State Board of Education Curriculum. These programs include
reading, writing, and math readiness skills. We also have incorporated an
Integrated Arts Program (IAP) that enhances: music, the arts, science, cooking,
and social studies. We focus heavily on interpersonal, social developmental
skills, and fine/gross motor skills. For language enrichment, we focus on storytelling, nursery rhymes, drawing stories, and poetry. We incorporate field trips
and invite different professionals to visit our classrooms to enhance our
Thematic and Academic Units.

The preschool program we offer is bi-lingual (Spanish and English).
Mrs Veronica is a Montessori educated head teacher she incorporates her education
in the lesson plans she creates for our classroom. In class we work on hands on
mathematics, language arts, hands on science, practical life skills, working with our
five senses, arts and crafts, dramatic play, water and sand, manners and respect,
and so much more! Some of the main focuses in our class are our manner and
respecting others, learning about our environment and self, and reinforcing positive
behaviors.
Miss Mary is our Pre-k, and Kindergarten teacher her class offers kindergarten prep
M-F 9-12 as well. We have information from kindergarten curriculum as to what is
expect to know when your child is ready to start school we use that information to
develop a program to cater to the growth and development of your child in order to
give them every chance to succeed. We work on developing social skills,
mathematics, fine motor skills, language, art, science, and many other activities to
help foster your child's growth and development.
One major benefit to our program is we are offered out of a child care facility so if you
are looking for daily care as well that is an option for you, if not our program is still
available to all families in the Davis county area.

I graduated from BYU with a dual degree in elementary education and early
childhood education.
I taught elementary education in Provo School District for 7 years and have
taught preschool in my home for the past 8 years.
I believe that learning should be fun. I believe that learning happens easily in a
structured environment. I feel that learning happens when all 5 senses are
used to experience what is being taught.
My program includes; 1) An introduction to the alphabet: recognition, sounds for
and handwriting. 2) An introduction to the numbers 1-20. 3) Many children’s
books and songs that enhance a weekly unit that is experienced. 4) Snack
time, centers, show-n-tell which encourages language development,
cooperative skills and independent working and 5) Positive self esteem! If I
think I can, I can!

Get your child Kindergarten Ready! I'll teach Art, Music, Reading, Writing,
Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Colors, and Social Skills. My goal is to teach your
child all the skills and knowledge they need to know, so they can enter
kindergarten with confidence and ready to be successful throughout all their
school years.
Students will be assessed three times throughout the year. Parents will be made
aware of their child's progress.
Each month we have a different fun theme with art projects and activities to go
along with the theme. Many of my toys and books are rotated monthly, so
there's always new and exciting things to play with and learn from.
We will go on two field trips and have two class parties during the year.

The emphasis with my students is in reading and math. I feel that these two are
important to helping them in the future. Every day we will be reciting the
alphabet, counting, talking about colors, shapes, science, and other aspects of
learning. We will also be learning how to play well with others and alone. I
believe that play is an important way to learn. Most of the pre-kindergarten
students will be reading short books and doing simple math problems by the
end of their time with me.
I love to have fun with the children. We will be having class parties, going on field
trips, have a year end program and other fun activities.

At Laura's Learning Tree, we educate the whole child. This means we tailor
lesson plans to meet your child's need in each of the following domains:
 Cognitive
● Social
 Emotional
● Moral
 Physical
● Language & Literacy
The philosophy of our school is to foster and promote well-rounded children who
are ready to learn and be successful in school! I believe in (and practice!)
educating each individual child at his or her own pace. For example, if we are
working on letter identification, I may work with a younger child on learning to
identify his own name and the individual letters within it. For an older child, I
may work on teaching her the letters within her last name and the sounds those
letters make or how to spell "Mom". If we need to work on colors, I may work on
identifying colors with one child in the same week I work on teaching about
mixing colors to another child. I write my lesson plans each week based on
where the specific children in my class are ready to go! There is no prescripted, canned curriculum.

We offer a quality, authentic AND affordable Montessori curriculum. Extensive
Math and Language programs. Experienced teachers. Through experience with
the beautiful and specially developed materials, multiple senses are engaged
and children are then able to 'absorb' knowledge and basic principles.
Montessori is child-led. Meaning, the child is able to learn about an array of
subjects both academic and social, at their own pace in their own time.
Montessori materials are self correcting whenever possible. The child is able to
see their own errors and make any needed corrections. Montessori education
allows children to "own" their education. It gives them the opportunity to learn
facts they need to know, but also gives them actual EXPERIENCE with those
principals so they become permanently cemented in their mind. They are then
able to draw upon that knowledge for the rest of their lives. The Montessori
"Prepared Environment" allows the children to explore and learn on their own,
discovering concepts for themselves. The benefit of this is that when the child
feels ownership over their education and their ability to gain knowledge, they
are empowered to build on that knowledge. The Montessori teacher is there to
guide and to facilitate learning.

My curriculum is learning and recognition of the alphabet, colors, numbers,
shapes, sorting, counting, music, rhyming, matching, opposites, science,
health, art, self-esteem, social skills, and cooking.
These skills are taught through weekly units with a strong emphasis in literature
to develop reading readiness skills. I use the Zoo-phonics method that fully
involves your child’s eyes, ears, mouth and body as they learn phonemic
awareness, the alphabet and how to decode (read) and encode
(spell/write).This program is amazing! My goal is to have each child reading
before they enter school—with your help we can accomplish this!!
We also create an alphabet art binder that will be a keepsake for your child to
take with them at the end of our preschool year.

My name is Michelle Nelson. I grew up in Ogden, Utah in a family of eight
children. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher. I loved
lining my dolls and stuffed animals up on the couch for school.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude BS in Elementary Education from Utah State
University in 2002 and went on to teach 2 years of Kindergarten at Lewis
Elementary in Ogden. While teaching I completed my Early Childhood
Endorsement and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Masters Degree from
Utah State University. I have been teaching preschool for 11 years and have
loved every minute of it!
I try to make my students first experience with "school" as positive as possible,
taking a balanced approached to preschool incorporating a well planned
curriculum and fun hands-on centers. Kindergarten readiness is of utmost
importance to me. I want each child to leave Small Stars Preschool feeling
excited and confident for future schooling.

Mountain Kids Preschool’s philosophy stems from years of experience and study
in Early Childhood Education. We believe in supporting the development of the
whole child. "Seeing children joyfully, physically and intellectually engaged in
meaningful learning about their world and everyone in it is the truest measure
of our success as early childhood educators,” Bredekamp & Copple (2009).
Mountain Kids Preschool provides a safe and nurturing environment with both the
outdoor and indoor classroom onsite. We spend a lot of time outside actively
exploring the natural world around us, yet we also have times where we will be
inside learning as well. Students will have daily opportunities to explore: art,
math, nature, music, culture, plant life, exercise, literature, animal life, social
studies, practical life skills, language/alphabet.
The curriculum and activities at Mountain Kids Preschool are influenced by
Forest Preschools, Montessori and Waldorf.

Preschool Express thinks differently than a traditional school. We have
developed an educational system that is a balance between the traditional
school and the Montessori school. Our curriculum is varied and rigorous,
focuses on the educational needs of the child.
Children are smarter than ever before and have a great passion for learning and
exploration. Preschool Express works with children ages 3 to 5 to develop their
skills in basic concepts, such as math, writing, phonics, science, the arts and
social studies. Every day at Preschool Express is a day to discover and gain
knowledge.
Preschool Express placed great emphasis on social studies and exploring the
world around us. Our weekly theme is incorporated into lessons about
ideology, weather, science and more. Our curriculum is ideal for developing a
child’s love of learning.
Debbie Walker and her daughter purchased Preschool Express from the original
owner over 5 years ago and have been going strong ever since. Our
educational background and commitment to the happiness and development of
preschool aged children makes us an ideal choice for your child’s education

I first started teaching preschool 19 years ago while also providing childcare. I
found it very rewarding to teach so in 2008 I stopped doing childcare and
started focusing on teaching preschool. I am CPR & First Aid certified, I have
passed many background checks, and I have a current Syracuse City
Business license. My husband, Shawn, and I have 6 wonderful children in our
"his, mine, and ours" family. Our children are 22, 22, 19, 19, 16, and 12 years
old. Shawn is a Drafting Supervisor at a facility in Ogden, Utah. My goal is to
prepare your child academically, socially, emotionally, and physically for their
school years. I am looking forward to meeting your child and teaching them get
a head start for kindergarten.
Every year is different at MINI MONKEYS PRESCHOOL so that your child can
attend preschool for more than 1 year. We learn the alphabet using the
concepts taught in the ZOO PHONICS program.

children, and now their grandchildren have attended The Little Red School
House and been loved and taught by wonderful teachers.
Mary Jane Coombs (Miss Mary) bought The Little Red School House in 2012. As
a former teacher in the Davis School District and former owner of a successful
preschool (Mary’s Little Lambs Preschool in Layton, Utah) she knew that her
addition to The Little Red School House would be an exciting and wonderful
opportunity.
Each child attends 2- 2 ½ hours a day for 2-3 days a week. We will learn music,
rhyming, sign language, colors, shapes, math, matching, opposites, phonics
and sounds, science, games, cooking, art and much more all connected to the
ABC of the week.
Miss Mary has kept the great traditions of the past while integrating curriculum
and resources that fully prepares children for their educational journey.
Students learn to LOVE school and feel confident in their abilities!

I am a graduate of BYU with my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I am
also a mother of three small children, so I have experience with the energy that
they can require and the joy that they can find in learning new things!
Social learning is an important part of a child's early development. Lessons on grace
and courtesy will be included in classroom instruction, i.e. greeting a person when
you enter a room, bathroom etiquette, what to do if you don't like a food you are
served, etc.
The optional Friday Nature Day will be held outside in the back yard, or at other
designated meeting spots, which may include the Bountiful Pond or nearby parks
or wildlife areas. We will learn about the world around us as the seasons change.
No matter the weather, rain, wind, sun or snow, we will be outside to experience it.
If you choose this option, please be prepared to dress your child appropriately for
the weather. In case of bitter cold, we have a greenhouse where we can gather to
warm up.
(Your child must be enrolled in a regular M/W or T/Th class to participate in Nature
Fridays.)
