Abstract :
The BADA data files provide performance and operating procedure data for a set of aircraft known as
BADA aircraft original models. A further set of aircraft types have been identified as being ‘equivalent’ to
these original aircraft models. They are referred to as synonym aircraft. 18 new synonym aircraft have
been added. Due to the addition of new direct models and aircraft remodelling in BADA 3.9, the BADA
synonym aircraft have been updated and revised in consequence. In total BADA 3.9 provides
equivalences for 221 aircraft types. 31 equivalence reports are provided for the assigned BADA 3.9
original models.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. IDENTIFICATION AND SCOPE
This document presents a partial revision of the synonym aircraft modifications for the Base of
Aircraft Data (BADA) Revision 3.9 [RD1]
This revision of the synonym aircraft has been made with the aid of the BADA Synonym Search
Tool. This tool is provided as a function of the BADA Calculation Tool (Web application) which is
described in the Synonym Aircraft Report for the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) - Revision 3.7 [RD2]
and the Guidelines for the BADA Synonym Search Tool available from the BADA Calculation Tool
Web site: http://badaext.eurocontrol.fr/home/documentation.
For the BADA Revision 3.9 release, only aircraft types subject to a synonym change have been
revised. 3 new Jet engined models have been added to BADA Revision 3.9 and several Piston
and Turboprop aircraft have been revised due to max altitude and speed revisions for some of the
BADA direct models. Additonal new synonym aircraft types have been added. BADA Revision 3.9
covers 221 synonym aircraft types.
The acceptance criteria for aircraft equivalences are specified in Section 3.
1.2. ORGANISATION
This document is presented in three sections. The first section includes a list of referenced
documents and a glossary of acronyms.
The synonym aircraft model identification is summarised in Section 2.
Section 3 briefly describes the major BADA Revision 3.9 synonym changes since the BADA
Revision 3.8 release. A final conclusion is provided.
Appendix A contains an aircraft equivalence report for each of the aircraft under consideration.

2. SYNONYM AIRCRAFT MODEL IDENTIFICATION
The BADA data files provide performance and operating procedure data for a set of aircraft known
as BADA aircraft original models. A further set of aircraft types have been identified as being
‘equivalent’ to these original aircraft models. They are referred to as synonym aircraft. For all
BADA releases, a list of synonym aircraft types is provided.
The following list of search criteria is used for the BADA synonym model identification:
•
engine type;
•
wake turbulence category (WTC)
•
maximum take-off weight (MTOW);
•
maximum operating speed (VMO)
•
maximum Mach operating speed (MMO);
•
maximum operational height (HMO) - service ceiling (or maximum operating altitude)
•
Normal Cruise Speed CAS above 10,000ft (Vhigh_cruise)
•
Normal Cruise Speed Mach (Mach_cruise)
The choice of an equivalent synonym aircraft type is made by selecting the aircraft type which best
matches the search criteria. In some cases where the search is not successful due to difficulty to
match the selected criteria with BADA aircraft model, some assumptions and changes to search
criteria are required.
3. BADA 3.9 SYNONYM REVISION
The CFMU air traffic is used as a representative sample to identify the current European traffic mix
of aircraft types. The choice of BADA aircraft models are targeted to reflect this traffic make up.
When a corresponding BADA model is not available, a synonym equivalent can be proposed. The
EEC Note No. 2010-008, Coverage of 2009 European Traffic for the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA)
[RD3] has been used to select the aircraft types for identification. In addition to this representative
sample of aircraft types, new synonym aircraft have been added following specific
EUROCONTROL user requests.
The modifications covered in this chapter are designed for inclusion in BADA Revision 3.9.
A total of 221 synonym aircraft types are proposed for BADA Revision 3.9. Since the release of
BADA Revision 3.8, 18 new synonym types have been added (Table 1), 4 JET, 5 PST and 9 TBP
types. 4 previous synonym types have been removed and remodelled as direct models, 13
synonym types have been revised with new assigned reference models. No synonym types have
been withdrawn from BADA. Note, however, that the 3 generic fighter models (FGTN, FGTH, and
FGTL) and generic helicopter (HELI) do not hold an official ICAO code [RD4]. They do therefore
not appear amongst the CFMU traffic data nor appear in the Navion database synonym revision
equivalence reports. All the fighter aircraft types and helicopters were assigned to one of the
fighter models or HELI synonym.
A summary list of BADA Revision 3.9 synonyms with their associated reference aircraft is provided
in Table 1. New synonym aircraft are highlighed in grey. Revised synonym types appear in bold.
Removed synonyms (replaced by BADA direct models) appear with a strike-through.

The summary equivalence report results (example Figure 1) are provided in Appendix A of this
document.
The Delta ‘0’ value is used to indicate that engine type and WTC category match for both the BADA
synonym and the assigned model.

CONCLUSION
Difficulty to identify a BADA model for a synonym proves subjective for some aircraft when 2 models
are proposed. It is judged that in such cases, depending on performance capabilities required by the
end–user, certain aircraft behaviours could be favored over others, e.g. speed vs altitude capability.
It is worth emphasizing that the proposed synonyms are based on the best information currently
available to EUROCONTROL and for the BADA APM selected (default) search criteria. The choice of
search criteria and the way priorities are defined may not be the best appropriate for all applications
and uses of BADA. For example the use of BADA in a trajectory prediction tool may place priorities on
speed and maximum operational altitudes when it is used in upper airspace, while a WTC may be of
greater priority in the TMA. Environmental studies may put greater priority to aircraft engine type and
fuel flow and so on. This is to say that it is not possible to identify a synonym aircraft which meets all
user needs. In some special cases, the choice of available models in BADA Revision 3.9 has not
permitted a synonym match for both engine category and aircraft performance. For this reason, some
aircraft (e.g. A400, BN2T and YK40) have been attributed synonyms of a different engine category
when prioritising the performance parameters.
Considering the difficulties described above, it is envisaged that the BADA user can change the
choice of synonym aircraft. To facilitate that work the Synonym Search Function has been made
available to the BADA licensed users since BADA Revision 3.7. More information on how to obtain
access rights is provided in the BADA Product Management Document [RD5].
The jet engined (JET) aircraft models C56X, E50P and E55P have been added to BADA 3.9. For this
reason 5 JET synonyms types were reassigned different BADA reference models in BADA revision
3.9. Four new turboprop (TBP) models have been added as a result of an ICAO designator revision
change (Edition 39 of Doc. 8643). These are the AT46, AT73, AT75 and AT76. The TBP TBM7
synonym has been replaced with a model. The turboprop BADA models BE58 and BE20 have been
modified for BADA Revision 3.9. As a result, 3 TBP allocated synonyms have been accordingly
revised. No new piston (PST) reference models have been added to BADA Revision 3.9. The BADA
piston reference models C421 and PA31 have been modified thus allowing the revision of several
BADA piston synonym aircraft.
