Skill 9: Asking a Question
SKILL STEPS
1. Decide what you need to ask.
Discuss how students can decide whether they really need to ask this question.
2. Decide whom you will ask.
Discuss how to decide whether to ask the teacher, an aide, a classmate, or someone else.
3. Decide what to say.
Stress asking in a friendly way—it is not only what you say but how you say it.
4. Choose a good time.
Discuss how to choose a good time (when the other person isn’t busy or talking with someone
else).
5. Ask your question.
Teach students Saying Thank You (Skill 3) and encourage them to use it when they receive the
answer to their question.
SUGGESTED MODELING SITUATIONS
▶▶ School: Ask the teacher about something you don’t understand.
▶▶ Home: Ask your mom and dad about their work or hobbies.
▶▶ Peer group: Ask another student how to play a game.
▶▶ Community: You ask the librarian about a book or a movie you want to check out.
COMMENTS
Discuss the times when it is necessary to ask a question. Encourage students to use this skill only
when they have a legitimate question. Discussion should include other ways of finding needed information—for example, consulting a dictionary, encyclopedia, or the Internet.
