When I arrived at Delaware Valley College in 2007, I was quickly taken
in by a college with great potential. There was a spirit of confidence present
that was unique and infectious. As President, I set out to use DelVal’s many
resources – its talented faculty and staff, the legacy of its noble beginning,
its resilience and optimism – to help transform the college into a university
of stature and reputation.
I am happy to report that the groundwork has been completed and the
transformation has begun.
Like it has in the past, the college worked together as a unit during the
past fiscal year and pushed for continuous improvement. The contributions
extended through nearly every department.
All this energy was funneled into an aggressive, far-reaching, strategic
plan. The plan has become a document of action rather than a forgotten shelf
fixture. It is alive and robust, a reflection of talented project managers and a
hard-working army of committee members. Its breadth is wide. No part of the
college is untouched by it.
With the beginning of the plan’s earnest execution, change is clearly
evident. In the end, the plan will have taken an often misunderstood and
sometimes unnoticed college and made it:

the world’s problems.
• A magnet for the best minds and the best intentions.
I’m both proud of and excited by what has been done and what will be
done at Delaware Valley College. It is a testament to will, vision and aspiration.
Assuredly, the work ahead will not be easy, but the transformation – with
a great headwind – has indeed begun. I invite you to read more about it in the
pages that follow, and to consider becoming a worthy part of it.
Sincerely,
Dr. Joseph S. Brosnan, President
1
Something dynamic was happening.
That became clear when proud alumni during Homecoming mistakenly
referred to Delaware Valley College as a university. There had been
so much change recently, so much talk about this and other exciting
possibilities, that they just assumed the plans for university status had
been completed and approved.
That won’t come until 2014. Even so, DelVal has been advancing with a
laser-like focus on its mission to achieve a higher level of ... everything.
“We are no longer a striving institution,” President Joseph S. Brosnan
likes to say. “We are a thriving institution.”
During the summer, a frequent sight on campus was the trucks of
contractors, builders and service people. Staff members tried but
couldn’t keep up with the projects.
“… Looks like the new equipment for the lab renovations has arrived.”
“… Have you seen the woodwork they’ve installed in the Shapiro wing?”
“ … When does the new landscaping go in at the Student Center?”
Few could recall so much positive activity. It goes beyond simple
construction.
2
“We are not just seeking university status,” said Richard Reif, a college
trustee and CEO of Doylestown Hospital. “We are evolving into an
organization that is going to reach out and impact students in a new
way. We are evolving into something far more meaningful than a
name change.”
DelVal’s evolution comes at a time when many colleges are cutting back
on programs, halting building and freezing salaries. DelVal managed
to avoid this fate. In fact, it is on better financial footing than perhaps it
has ever been. When small parcels of land near the college came on the
market, DelVal invested in them.
“We have come out of this recession in better shape than we went in,”
President Brosnan said in his fall State of the College address.
The improvements are a product of an ambitious, multi-faceted strategic
plan that began taking shape five years ago. The plan, formally approved
in 2010, was initiated by a team of about 25 staff, faculty and trustees,
but it is being brought to fruition by hundreds. Almost from the start,
it began to transform the college.
That transformation is more than sustainable. It has become part of the
college culture.
Indeed, if the year could be described in just a few words, they would be
these: The Momentum Continues.
3
As the strategic plan was achieving very specific goals, general operations
brought about welcomed results of their own. For the ninth straight year, DelVal
was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best colleges in the
Northeast. Indeed, it moved up six places in the ranking. It also was honored by
the Princeton Review, which placed DelVal on its list of top colleges in the region.
An assortment of noteworthy turns continued. Some were institutional; some were
personal. All were reflections of forward movement:
•A
s of June 30, the endowment more than doubled. It was a remarkable year of
giving, with $32.4 million received. In a study by the National Association of
College and University Business Officers, Delaware Valley College was ranked first
among 823 institutions in year-over-year endowment growth, with an increase of
120 percent.
•S
tudent retention improved, as did average SAT scores. Meanwhile, DelVal’s
enrollment pool grew.
•C
hemistry instructor Ron Petruso, working with students, earned a patent for his
process of extracting biofuel from tobacco leaves.
• Russell Redding, the dean of agriculture and

environmental sciences, was appointed by
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to
chair the national Advisory Committee on
Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture.
• For the third time, Dr. Jim O’Connor, a media
and communications professor, had one of his
plays produced off-Broadway.
• DelVal developed its own mobile application,
bringing news and information about the
college to cell phones.
•C

Supporting these and other accomplishments was a stronger, more engaged
leadership team.
“Dr. Brosnan and some remarkably talented people are making it all happen,”
Trustee Reif said. “They have high energy and deep experience.”

Recruitment and development of the Board of Trustees now receives added significance, time,
attention and importance. It is recognized as critical to the future of the college. The most
recent appointees, exhibiting a wide range of skills and backgrounds, are:
• Helen Piszek Nelson, co-chair of the Copernicus Society of America.
• W. Thomas Lomax ’87, of The Lomax Companies.
• Charles J. Alpuche ’81, a retired PepsiCo executive now doing consulting.
• Elizabeth (Betsy) Gemmill, lawyer, corporate executive and head of the Warwick Foundation.
• Eric Compton, worldwide general manager for Ortho Clinical Diagnostics.
6
Key cabinet and staff positions also were filled.
In July, Dr. Bashar Hanna was named vice president for academic affairs and dean
of faculty. Dr. Hanna is the former associate provost at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y.
At Temple University, he earned his B.A. in biology, his M.A. in developmental
biology and his Ph.D. in developmental neurobiology.
“Dr. Hanna has a deep and diverse academic background that is a critical asset
for DelVal,” Dr. Brosnan said.
At Ithaca College, a selective school in New York with approximately 478 full-time
faculty members and about 6,760 students, Dr. Hanna provided leadership in the
areas of academic assessment, academic enrichment services, grants and sponsored
projects, fellowships and scholarships and the college’s Integrative Learning Initiative.
Before that, he served as dean of Arts and Sciences and

Meanwhile, Trustee Michael Moss, who joined the board
in 2009, was selected as campaign chairman for the
college’s five-year, $50 million fund-raising campaign,
now in the silent phase. Moss is the managing director and presiding chair of Team
Capital Bank’s Bucks County region. He will be helping to raise money that will
support the strategic plan.
In addition, six new faculty members were hired.
It didn’t take long for the refreshed leadership team to get noticed.
“I think we are making tremendous progress as a college,” said Dr. James Trainer,
chairman of the Board of Trustees. “The board is incredibly impressed with the
work of the senior staff and our new trustees. I’m enthusiastic about the future of
Delaware Valley College.”
7
The future is indeed happening at Delaware Valley College, with progress
almost daily. Volumes would be required to detail all of what has been
done, all of what is being done, and all of what will be done.
The continuing momentum and accompanying transformation had its
inception with the approval of the strategic plan. The plan outlines a
new, shared vision that calls for DelVal to become an exemplary small,
private, teaching university known for programs in agricultural and environmental sciences, the life and physical sciences, business, humanities,
and graduate studies. The college intends to distinguish itself through
the application of experiential learning, interdisciplinary endeavors, and
the art and science of personal teaching, both at the undergraduate
and graduate levels.
The plan establishes 10 major strategic goals. Over 40 strategies are
identified, which are supported by over 100 initiatives. All this is
represented in a clear, simple diagram called, “Vision for a University.”
That diagram illustrates a new three-college structure, adds a fourth division
for graduate, professional and entrepreneurial studies, and links everything together with experiential learning and interdisciplinary studies.
8
As the momentum continues, the college is:
• Realigning academic departments toward the new structure.
• Working with an architect on renderings for a new Life Sciences Center.
• Providing students with more undergraduate research opportunities.
• Preparing a fall rollout of a new Experiential Learning program.
It will give students more out-of-classroom training via internships,
professional conferences, student teaching, study abroad, business
partnerships and more.
• Developing new marketing plans that firmly establish DelVal’s
institutional identity and make clear its value and promise to students.
• Instituting a framework and practices that will allow DelVal to operate
as a high- performance organization.
… and this is just a short summary.
9
10
Always at the core, always at the heart, is academics.
Teaching and learning are not static at Delaware Valley College.
Upgrades, improvements and additions have come via an exciting
assemblage of work by scholars and administrators. The recent focus
has been on graduate studies.
“The depth and breadth of our graduate programs allows each student
to view his or her profession in a unique and different way,” said
Dr. Hanna. “The programs provide students with an enhanced ability
to interpret, analyze, and design solutions to events in both their
professional and personal lives. By presenting each student with a
synergistic education, they gain the tools necessary to effectively
respond to the challenges of their professional world.”
At the start of the last fiscal year, DelVal had two master’s programs.
It needs as least five to qualify as a university. It now has three, and two
additional proposals have been sent to the Pennsylvania Department
of Education for approval. Other master’s programs are in the planning
stages, as is a doctoral program.
Recently approved was a master’s in teaching and learning designed
for Pennsylvania and New Jersey teachers. In the works is a master’s
in counseling psychology, with specializations in child and adolescent
therapy and social justice. Also pending is a master’s in policy studies,
with specializations in food and agricultural policy, environmental policy
and development policy.
In addition, a certification program for supervision of special education
was written, approved, and is ready to be offered.
There are considerable expenses associated with these new programs,
but the college is committed to them. Policy studies, for example, will
require $20,000 to $30,000 just in annual library resources. All start-up
costs are being covered by the President’s Initiative Fund and will not
impact the operating budget.
“The group involved in the planning decided these would be really
high-quality programs, with no shortcuts,” said Dr. Jack Schmidt, who
chairs multiple departments at the college and assisted with the
proposals. “At the end of the day, the administration supported our
vision for a quality graduate school.”
11
After everything is measured and analyzed, inspected and researched, looked at from
the left and the right and from up and down; after think tanks report in, after algorithms
are written and the data is sorted, there is but one truth: College is for the student.
“I believe our total purpose for being there is to bring value to the students,”
said Trustee Reif.
In every way, all the strategic planning initiatives are aimed at
increasing that value. Evidence of it is visible. Reif said he saw that
recently in the bright face and glowing words of Margaret Levicoff,
“I was truly impressed by the

students and faculty at the San Diego conference,” Reif said. “It was

This student saw her professor in a new light, and it touched her.”
Speaking to the trustees and the cabinet, Margaret put it this way: “I’m so blessed,
I’m so lucky to have this kind of education.”
She is but one of many students who have been caught up in the momentum, who
have experienced something beyond their expectations. Margaret represents
DelVal’s reason for being; its reason for moving ahead. Delaware Valley College has
become a force for improvement that results not just in a better college, but better
students, better citizens and – ultimately – a better world.
The DelVal momentum, with the help of the trustees, the faculty, cabinet, staff and
students like Margaret, will not diminish. No decline is expected in the need for
bright people capable of finding solutions to global problems, which is why forward
is DelVal’s only viable direction.
As a college and as a university, DelVal will not turn back. It will not deviate. Its
mission and vision are firm. It will continue to make a difference.
An institution that once strived now thrives. The transformation has begun.
