Burley Sumner Burgett was born in 1891 on a
farm in Douglas County. His parents were
Wilson Burgett and Kate Brown. After high
school, he attended Valporaso Business College.
Upon graduation, he returned to the farm and in
1913 married a school teacher from Murdock,
Orpha Catherine Layton.
They had four
children: Lois (Warnes), William, Gladys
(Barthell) and Joanne (Miller). In 1938 Burley
left farming to run for public office. He was
elected County Clerk of Douglas County where
he served until 1958.
