Year 11 English Literature 2016/2017 Unit 1 – Nineteenth Century Prose Students will study either Jekyll and Hyde or A Christmas Carol in preparation for Paper 1 of GCSE Literature. Students will learn about the plot, characters and themes in the text. The initial focus will be on extract analysis and becoming more familiar with the language. As students become more confident, they will start to explore questions about the text as a whole. In addition to these skills, students will explore how social and historical context may have influenced the writer’s work. They will be asked to consider how a modern audience might respond differently to a nineteenth century audience. Students will build on skills already developed in analysing language, structure and form. The format of the assessment is very similar to the ‘Extract to Whole’ task completed for the Romeo and Juliet unit in Year 9. Knowledge to be covered: - The plot of the novel - The main characters, their motives and the relationships between them - Social attitudes in the nineteenth century - The writer’s methods: language, structure and form - Relevant subject terminology Skills to be covered: - How to select and use suitable quotes and references - How to develop analysis in an insightful way - How to identify and comment on the writer’s methods, using suitable terminology - How to use context to underpin your analysis - How to analyse an extract - How to plan an ‘Extract to Whole’ exam response - Strategies for revision and learning suitable quotations Students will be set one homework task per fortnight of at least 45 minutes. Tasks can be found on ‘Show My Homework’and will vary according to the needs of each group. Example tasks: - Research tasks - Extract analysis - Revision - Character study - Essay response Homework Personalised Learning Checklist Curriculum Details Term 1 – September to November Curriculum Overview Year 11 English Literature 2016/2017 Unit 2 – Romeo and Juliet Revision Students will revise ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in preparation for Unit 2 of GCSE English Literature. Students studied the text in Year 9 and so should already be familiar with the plot and characters. Up until the Christmas break, the focus will be on revisiting these basics. From January, learning will focus more specifically on exam skills, as well as reviewing key themes and characters. As books are not permitted in any of the literature exams, students will also need to develop strategies for remembering key quotes and references. Staff will assess the needs of their students and plan lessons accordingly to meet the learning needs of each group and individual students within it.
