RIVERVIEW EAGLES SOAR Mission Statement: Through teamwork the Riverview community supports each person as they become respectful, responsible, high achieving individuals. www.sno.wednet.edu Riverview Elementary 7322 - 64th St SE Snohomish, WA 98290 360-563-4375 Tammy Jones, Principal Teresa Hurley, Administrative Asst. Peggy Kendall, Secretary November 6, 2014 CALENDAR Dear Families; Happy November! This month brings many events and activities to Riverview! We officially kicked off our holiday food drive by committing to participate in the “Holiday Pledge” for 2014 with the Snohomish Food Bank. Each classroom pod has committed to bring 100 of a specific food item, i.e. 100 cans of vegetables, fruit, stuffing, etc… Teachers are communicating specifics for their classes with students and families! This is a great way to support our community! Today we welcome our Veterans for our special Veteran’s Day programs at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The tribute by our students in the Cascade Pod is a special celebration and the way they honor the veterans is touching. Next week we are hosting a residency week with Missoula Children’s Theater. We host the auditions on Monday after school and rehearsals will follow each afternoon and evening during the week. We look forward to our work with them next week and to the two performances on Saturday, November 16th of Rapunzel. It is a great opportunity for kids to participate in this production, complete with costumes, lighting and makeup. On November 21st we will cap off our character trait focus for the month with our end of the month spirit and awards assembly starting at 9:05. November’s character trait focus is on “Say Thanks”-showing and communicating gratitude and appreciation. Please join us, if you are free, to celebrate our month of successes at the assembly! Dear Families; I wanted to take the time to communicate a little with you in the aftermath of the tragedy at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. The reach of the tragedy spread far and wide. I was struck by the connections in our communities and the caring and compassion shared with our neighbors. I have had a few parents ask me if we talked about the tragedy in our classrooms, and wanted to let you know that we chose not to bring up the tragedy, knowing that was a very personal decision on the part of families. We did however watch our kids closely and listen to them to see if any students were struggling and ensure that we were offering support to anyone in our Riverview family who needed it. Last week you received a heartfelt message from our superintendent, Dr. Bill Mester, about our district response and supports. In his communications he shared with you all about our practices for visitors to our schools and drills for emergency preparedness that we engage in. If you have any question about our Riverview practices, please do not hesitate to call or stop by. I am happy to talk with anyone. As you know safety is a priority for us. When you come to Riverview during the school day, you find exterior doors locked, ensuring that all visitors come through the office. You also know that all visitors must sign in and obtain a visitor badge. These are not new practices for us here at Riverview, they are simply what we have done to ensure safety for our students and staff. We appreciate your continued support of these practices. In addition, we practice monthly drills throughout the school year; fire, earthquake, shelter in place, lockdowns, etc… We review our procedures frequently and have recently received additional training from Deputy Schwartzmiller, an officer with the Snohomish County Sherriff’s Office who is assigned to local schools. In the coming weeks we will be practicing our first lock down of the year. Given the range in ages and maturity development, our drill practices may look a little different for kindergarten or first grade students and our sixth grade students. Again, I want to extend the offer for anyone who would like to talk about safety procedures and practices here at Riverview. Thank you for partnering with us to support our students and Riverview community. Sincerely, Tammy Jones Principal Riverview Student Leadership Team Encourages Everyone to “Say Thanks!” November 1-14 and December 1-12, Riverview students will be “Saying Thanks” and showing gratitude by serving our Snohomish community with a food drive. Riverview students will be working with their classrooms and pods to collect items for the food drive. Each pod will be working to collect one hundred of an item needed! Well it didn’t really, but this story about Rapunzel takes you on a frivolous frolic through the French countryside. The Ogres garden in the Mushroom patch while the Corn and Potato spies report back to Madame Gothel. Frenchy and his intense friends, the Wood Elves, do their best to help Rapunzel escape the grasp of Madame Gothel. The lost Prince, Rapunzel’s Parents, and her friends the Unicorns try to help. Just when you think it’s safe to cross the bridge a Troll and Three Billy Goats Gruff get in the way. It doesn’t help that the Three Bears (or is it four) confuse Rapunzel with Goldilocks and chase her through the forest. Add to that the Gremlins trying to play tricks on everyone and you have chaos! Well, it’s not that bad because the Pixies foil the Gremlin’s plans most of the time. In short, Rapunzel and all the rest of the characters tell a silly tale of personal triumph and friendship. ================================== Auditions will take place immediately after school in the gym. Students will be required to have a permission slip in order to stay after school and audition. Approximately 50-60 students will be cast in the production! A big thanks to the Riverview PTO for sponsoring this opportunity for our students! For more information, contact the Riverview office.@ 360-563-4375 HALF DAY KINDERGARTEN FRIDAY SCHEDULE On alternating Fridays, half day kindergarten will attend from 8:30 to 1:10 with the rest of the school.
