Spring 2015: President`s Letter - University of California, Berkeley

January 17th, 2015
Dear Cal Women’s Rugby Supporters,
Thank you for your continued support of our team. As a self funded, non-profit, Sport Clubs team, we rely on your help to
continue to practice and play on an elite level.
The Fall season was a great success after winning 1st place at both National 7s Qualifying tournaments at Oregon State
University and Stanford University, securing a place at the USA Rugby 7s National Championship which will take place May 2324 (location TBD). Cal defeated Central Washington at the Oregon qualifier 31-20 and defeated UC Davis at the Stanford
qualifier 36-0. The bears also traveled to Stanford two other weekends in the fall to play more 7s games. After being unable to
attend the previous year, the team was eager to gain experience in the traditional 15s rugby by traveling to San Diego in
November for the annual Scrum by the Sea 15s tournament. Cal was able to play a diverse set of teams and introduce 15s to the
new players. On the weekend of January 10th, Cal participated in the annual Stanford Invitational, where we had a twelve rookies
on the roster, a record for the team, and placed 4th. The team is eager for the upcoming 15s league season:
Saturday, January 24th vs. Chico
Saturday, January 31st vs. Davis
Saturday, February 7th vs. Stanford
Saturday, February 21st @ Chico
Saturday, February 28th @ Stanford
Saturday, March 7th @ Davis
Cal alumni, Berkeley All Blues member, and National Eagle’s team player, Irene Gardner excelled as the coach for Cal’s 7s team,
joined by Lucy Croy, another Cal graduate and All Blues player. Margaret “Mango” Sharp, a Cornell alumni and All Blues
player, came on as our 15s coach and we welcomed back Jaymie Schukle as the backs coach. Ellen Owens, our Director of Rugby
and team leader for the past 18 years, continues to work tirelessly to make our team successful on and off the field.
As one of only two Sport Clubs teams with an official alumni chapter, we saw increased alumni involvement this year. Thanks
to their fundraising, we received new practice and game balls as well as pennies for team practice. We hope to continue to grow
with their support.
This year the annual fundraising Homecoming banquet and silent auction will be held on February 7th, 2014 at the Strawberry
Canyon Recreational Area. It will take place after the 15s league game against Stanford, which will be at 4pm on Witter Rugby
Field. We hope to have a record-setting attendance from our alumnae, friends, and family.
We can’t do this without you and we need your support! You will find a donation form attached to the newsletter if you would
like to contribute to either our yearly operating costs or the Witter Women’s Rugby Endowment Fund. Your generosity is most
appreciated at any level.
Thank you so much for your continued support. Go bears!
