Third Grade News October 16, 2016 Student council classroom representatives that are running for office will give speeches on Tuesday in our classroom. These students may make a small (8.5 x 11) poster for their locker and one for the classroom. Box Top Contest is going on this week. Please send in those box tops (trimmed if possible). Here is a look at the curriculum for this week: VoWac- This week we will continue on the vowel team unit. Students will review vowel teams for the letter ‘e’ and be introduced to a new vowel team for long ‘e’. Math- Last week we started topic 3 which will teach the remaining basic facts for multiplication (3, 4, 6, 7, and 8’s). The strategy that the book is using to help learn these facts is to use the distributive property and break it into facts that are already known. For example, if I have 6 x 7, I could use 5 x7 and 1 x 7. Then add those products. We will finish making flash cards at school. These will stay at school so students can practice during school hours. In addition to practicing at school, students need to begin practicing multiplication facts at home as well. Flashcards are a great way to practice. I am hoping to begin testing of multiplication facts beginning in December so students have several weeks to start memorizing facts. Students will earn an ice cream sundae as a reward. If your child is in the advanced math group, keep an eye out for Mrs. Lastfogel’s math update. Students in this group need to work on memorizing the basic multiplication facts. English- We will finish the topics in the noun unit this week. This week students will learn about special plural nouns like mouse-mice or man-men. We will also learn about singular and plural possessive nouns. The review and test will not be complete until next week. Reading- In week two, students will be introduced to six vocabulary words. We will make vocabulary flashcards throughout the week and will have a short quiz on Friday. The main objective this week in workshop is imagery and creating that movie in your mind as you read. Students will be applying this to their own reading. Spelling- Students are working on week 6 words this week. The test is on Friday. Home spelling projects are due on Friday as well. I have added our spelling lists to spellingcity.com. If you go to the tab (find a list) and then enter my name (Melissa Stachowiak), it will be available. This week’s words can be found under week 5. There are many fun ways to practice spelling words on this site. Religion- In chapter four, students will be introduced to some women from the Old Testament that served as role models of faith. We will also be leading liturgy this week so we will be practicing for mass as well. Social Studies- In chapter two, students will learn about the first inhabitants of Michigan, the Native Americans. Science-We will be learning about magnetism and static electricity. Here is a look at our special schedule: Monday: Spanish & Music Wednesday: Gym & Computer Thursday: Mass & Library Friday: Art If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Have a great week! Blessings, Mrs. Stachowiak Third Grade Teacher Our Lady of Consolation School
