BEFORE
Now
WHY?
You organized and displayed
data using frequency tables.
You’ll display data using bar
graphs.
So you can visualize data, such as
the soccer records in Ex. 8.

Zoo Animals Two hundred
sixth and seventh grade students
were asked to name their favorite
zoo animal. The results are shown
in the table. How can you
represent this data visually?

A bar graph is a type of graph
in which the lengths of the
bars are used to represent
and compare data. A numerical scale is used
to determine the lengths of the bars.
EXAMPLE
You can display the data from the table above in a bar graph.
1 Choose a numerical scale.
Start the scale at 0. The greatest data value is 55, so end the scale at
a value greater than 55, such as 60. Use equal increments along the
scale, such as increments of 10.
2 Draw and label the graph.

Double Bar Graphs A double bar graph is a bar graph
that shows two sets of data on the same graph. The two bars
for each category are drawn next to each other.
