2. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
The minutes of the last meeting where reviewed.
3. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
1. Membership Fee for Union Clubs
Trung introduced the issue of Union Club budgets and whether or not
Union Clubs should be exempt from the £10 membership cost as they
may be using just as many resources as societies. It was suggested
that if there was a cap on their budgets, Union Clubs could have a
roster detailing members as opposed to a paid membership list with the
potential to charge their own membership fee.
Approved by majority vote with 1 abstention.
Action: Trung to look into this further and then bring it to Sports
Standing
2. What Defines a Sports Club?
An issue has arisen as to what defines a sports club, and what differs
them from a society. Should they carry on being self-defining, or should
they be defined by something else such as budget requests or Sport
England’s definition. Everyone agreed that the current system was fine
as it was. Trung suggested a system with multiple definitions from what
was discussed, with a club needing to meet at least two criteria to
become ratified as a sports club. i.e. be recognised by Sport England,
have the aim to compete and/or do physical activity.
3. Changes to Club Membership Fee
1
Trung introduced the possibility of raising the £10 membership cost of
joining a Union Sports club. It was suggested that making sports more
expensive would alienate people from participating, as well as
preventing clubs charging their own membership. Everyone objected to
the notion of raising the cost but wanted to find out what the £10 as for.
Action: Trung to find out the purpose of the £10 membership
4. Union Meetings
There was a general consensus that the Sports Standings weren’t
beneficial and that the informal nature of the Union Club Meetings was
better.
5. Club Photos
The subject of club photos was introduced and the date of the 21st
February proposed. All clubs seemed interested, and had no concerns
about taking the photos on a single day.
4. Items to note:
Refreshers Fayre – The date for Refreshers Fayre is set for 10th of
February.
Team Surrey Clothing – Orders for official Team Surrey clothing soon
to become available. Ice Hockey and Ballroom and Latin showed
interest.
5. Any other business
USSU – It was asked if there are still plans for a feature on USSU
allowing people to click and join a sports club online. Trung explained
there will be further development on the USSU site.
Budgets – The question was raised as to when budgets need to be
spent by. Trung explained there will be individual club status meetings
after Christmas to discuss this.
