2017 SCHOOL SPORT WA CHAMPION SCHOOLS BASKETBALL CHAMPION SCHOOL BASKETBALL OVERVIEW - 2017 In 2017 the Senior and Junior Leagues will continue to be run as per previous years. Senior Leagues will be conducted as a Round Robin competition with knockout crossovers leading through to a Grand Final. Junior Leagues will conduct their competitions as all-day carnivals followed by the finals being held in the one-day format and the Grand Finals being held on a separate date. All finals will be held at Bendat Basketball Centre, The Organising Committee comprises of representatives from School Sport WA and individual schools. To improve the standard of basketball in schools. 2. To improve the image of schools as a focal point of a student's sporting life. 3. To encourage sports persons to continue their education. 4. To identify and strengthen a strong sense of loyalty to the school and a strong school spirit for the competitors, students, staff, parents and the Community. 5. To make High Schools self-sufficient in the techniques and skills of administering a high standard basketball competition. ELIGIBILITY 1. All High Schools in the State of Western Australia, including Government and Non-Government High Schools in both the metropolitan and country areas. 2. Each school may nominate one men's and one women's team in each division. If places in the League allow, schools may nominate a second team with the approval of the Organising Committee. The divisions are: Senior Champion School (years 7 -12, 18 years or under in the year of competition). Junior Champions Schools (years 7- 9, and under 15 years in the year of competition 3. Players must be enrolled full-time at the school. 4. Players come from any year group for the Senior Competitions, and must be years 7 - 9 for the Junior Competition COMPETITION STRUCTURE 1. Leagues All schools wishing to compete will be placed in a "League" which will be arranged by geographic areas. Please note “Leagues” have been adjusted in 2017 with a new “Central” league created for 2017. 2. League Co-ordinators Each League will have a "League Co-ordinator" who will be responsible for setting up a round robin or all-day competition. The purpose of the round robin or day-carnival is to select the two best teams in that league to compete progress to the finals series. 3. Dates The Senior Round Robin competitions will be conducted in Term 1 and 2 and the Junior Carnivals will be conducted in Term 3 of the school year. Senior Competitions Wednesday 6th Feb – Nominations completed online with School Sport WA Friday 11th Feb – Fixtures e-mailed to schools by Co-coordinators. Each League will start at the decision of the Coordinator depending on number of teams, as long as games are completed by the 6th May, 2017 Tuesday 3rd May – Last day for Regional games. Wednesday 11th May- Fixtures for Senior finals posted on Website. Monday/Tuesday 23rd and 25th May –Senior finals commence Boys/Girls Grand Finals – Tuesday 28th June 3pm - 6pm (Girls 3pm Tip off Boys 4.30 Tip Off) Junior Competitions Dates for all Junior Carnivals will be set in term one to allow schools time to organise. These will be published on the SSWA website Friday 19th August – Completion date for Regional day carnivals. Tuesday 6th September – North River Day Carnival Wednesday 7th September – South River Day Carnival Tuesday 20th September – Boys/Girls Grand Final Peel/Harbour Leagues Date: TBA Venue: Mike Barnett 4. Finals Finals fixtures will be arranged by the Champion School Classic Organising Committee. Senior finals will be held out of school hours. Senior Finals will be in two divisions: Senior Champion Schools Basketball – Teams will nominate for this division and will include all specialist basketball schools and the PSA and IGGSA champion school and any other winning team from the various leagues. Teams will compete in a round robin competition with the winning school in both boys and girls being eligible to attend the National Schools Championships conducted by Basketball Australia. Senior All Schools Basketball – Teams will play in a knockout competition. Winning teams will be the champions of this division. Schools are only permitted to play in ONE division in the Senior Finals. Junior League - finals will be held at the Bendat Basketball Centre using a one day carnival format over two days for schools north and south of the river. The winning teams from each carnival will play off in a grand final time and date to be determined by the Schools Organising Committee. 5. Venues The venues for the round robin will be arranged by the competing school. This should be on a home and away basis when possible. The venues for the finals will be neutral, and will be booked and paid for by School Sport WA. 6. Fixtures The fixtures (days and times of competition) for the round robin will be set up by the League Coordinators in co-operation with all school representatives of their League. Girl’s games are to be played on a Monday afternoon and the Boy’s games are to be played on a Tuesday afternoon. These days are subject to negotiation between schools for individual games, however if an alternative agreement cannot be reached by both schools, these allocated days must be adhered to. 7. Game Timing The timing of all finals games will be 4 x 8 minute quarters; fully timed (the clock will stop on all whistles). To get teams ready for this style of game it is suggested that the round robin games be played by the same timing method if possible, but this is not mandatory. 4 x 8 minute quarters can be played if both coaches are agreeable, if not, 2 x 20 minute halves should be played. 8. Referees The finals games will be refereed by qualified Basketball WA referees. For ALL round robin games, schools in each League must supply ONE competent referee. Referees used by schools must have refereed previously (Students or external referees) or have significant knowledge of the rules of basketball (teachers). 9. Team Make-up The teams in this competition may consist of between five and twelve players. 10. Numbers The following numbers may be worn on player uniforms: 4 through 15; 20 through 25; 30 through 35; 40 through 45; and 50 through 55. ACC vs SSWA ALL STARS GAME The inaugural ACC vs SSWA Boys and Girls All Stars games were held in 2014. Following its great success this has become an annual event. The date for the 2017 All Stars game is Sunday 15 October, the games will be held at Bendat Basketball Centre. Throughout the senior competition coaches of all teams are asked to nominate best players from each round robin game, in a 3, 2, 1 voting system. This information will be used to assist with the selection of the SSWA All-star Teams. ACC will hold trials each year for the selection of their team. The winning coaches of the Champion Schools Competition will be offered the position of Head Coach of the All-star Team and the All Schools Champion will be offered the assistant Coach position. ALL CO-ORDINATORS ARE REQUIRED TO: ATTEND ALL MEETINGS ATTEND BOTH SENIOR AND JUNIOR GRAND FINALS The duties of the league Co-ordinator are as follows: 1. Personally contact each school in their league to encourage them to enter the competition. 2. Set up fixtures for their league competition. 3. Communicate any information about the running of the competition to all schools in their League, and 4. relay any problems to the Basketball Committee. 5. Compile all scores and best players after each game of the league competition and forward final result including team places and Finalists to: School Sport WA Basketball Coordinator, via scanning and e-mailing to ([email protected]). 6. Encourage the teams in their league to publicise all forth-coming games and the results of those games in their respective school newsletters and other media outlets available to the school.
