Drama and Literacy: A survey of effective
practice at Key Stages 3 and 4
This report is the outcome of a survey of 13 drama departments in schools
in England and Wales; its focus was on their contributions to the literacy of
their students.
The aim of this report has been to gather evidence about practice that
works, to identify some of the common underlying trends, and to share
examples. It set out to examine some claims that, at Key Stages 3 and 4,
drama often makes significant contributions to the literacy of its students and
that it is apt to help group of students who are less readily reached in many
other subjects.

effeithiol yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4
Canlyniad arolwg o 13 adran ddrama mewn ysgolion yng Nghymru a
Lloegr yw’r adroddiad hwn; roedd ei ffocws ar eu cyfraniadau at
lythrennedd eu myfyrwyr.

rhai o’r tueddiadau gwaelodol cyffredin, a rhannu enghreifftiau. Ei fwriad
oedd archwilio rhai honiadau bod drama yn aml yn cyfrannu’n sylweddol at
lythrennedd ei myfyrwyr yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4 a’i fod yn gallu
helpu grw p o fyfyrwyr nad yw mor hawdd
eu cyrraedd mewn llawer o bynciau eraill.

Bridges for Literacy
Clear evidence has been seen of a dip in aspects of English in the early
years of secondary school. As pupils transfer from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage
3 there are initial understandable strains upon learning. This report is the
outcome of a survey that looks at bridging arrangements for literacy.

Ysgrifennu i Ddysgu:
Arolwg o arfer effeithiol gydag ysgrifennu
yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4
Mae’r adroddiad hwn yn cynnig adroddiad o arfer llwyddiannus sy’n
ymddangos gydag ysgrifennu yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 3 a 4 mewn
Saesneg, ac ar draws y cwricwlwm. Arsylwyd gwersi hanes, daearyddiaeth,
addysg grefyddol a gwyddoniaeth hefyd; roedd prif bwyslais yr arolwg ar
gyfansoddiad heb naratif. Casglwyd y dystiolaeth mewn arolwg o 12 ysgol.
Ei nod fu casglu tystiolaeth am arfer sy’n gweithio, nodi rhai o’r syniadau
gwaelodol cyffredin, a rhannu enghreifftiau yn benodol.

Pontio Llythrennedd
Gwelwyd tystiolaeth glir o ostyngiad mewn agweddau ar Saesneg yn ystod
blynyddoedd cynnar ysgol uwchradd. Wrth i ddisgyblion drosglwyddo o
Gyfnod Allweddol 2 i Gyfnod Allweddol 3, gellir deall bod dysgu yn wynebu
pwysau ar y cychwyn. Mae’r adroddiad hwn yn ganlyniad arolwg sy’n
ystyried trefniadau pontio ar gyfer llythrennedd.

Securing Boys’ Literacy – a survey of
effective practice in primary schools
This report is a primary school companion to Improving Boys’ Literacy. Its
findings are drawn from a survey on schools where high achievements or
improvements in boys' literacy had already been found, or where boys’
underachievement had been identified and was actively being addressed.
The report includes an account of some of the chief elements of whole-school
practice that supports boys’ progress in reading and writing. It also includes a
picture of some of the ways in which LEAs assisted their schools in meeting
the twin challenges of developing literacy and boys’ achievements.
The report also draws conclusions as to what constitutes effective practice.

Sicrhau Llythrennedd Bechgyn – adolygiad o
arfer effeithiol mewn ysgolion cynradd
Cydymaith ysgol gynradd i Gwella Llythrennedd Bechgyn yw’r adroddiad hwn.
Mae ei ganfyddiadau wedi’u cymryd o arolwg o ysgolion ble roedd
cyflawniadau da neu welliannau mewn llythrennedd bechgyn eisoes wedi’u
canfod, neu ble roedd tangyflawniad bechgyn wedi’i nodi a'u bod yn mynd i’r
afael â hyn yn weithredol.
Mae’r adroddiad yn cynnwys adroddiad o rai o brif elfennau arfer ysgol gyfan
sy’n cefnogi cynnydd bechgyn mewn darllen ac ysgrifennu. Mae hefyd yn
cynnwys darlun o rai o'r ffyrdd y bu i AALIau gynorthwyo'u hysgolion wrth
fodloni’r ddwy her o ddatblygu llythrennedd a chyflawniadau bechgyn.
Mae’r adroddiad hefyd yn llunio casgliadau o
ran yr hyn yw arfer effeithiol.

bechgyn. Mae’r adroddiad hwn yn ymwneud â thri phrif faes: mentrau
ysgol gyfan; polisïau ac arferion adrannau anghenion arbennig; polisïau
ac arferion adrannau Saesneg. Mae’r adroddiad yn crynhoi’r prif
ganfyddiadau o’r arolwg ac yn llunio nifer o gasgliadau o ran arfer

llythrennedd mewn Saesneg, gan blant o gymunedau ieithyddol lleiafrifol sy’n
byw yng Nghymru a Lloegr. Ei nod fu casglu tystiolaeth am arfer effeithiol,
nodi rhai o’r tueddiadau gwaelodol cyffredin, ac yn benodol, rhannu
enghreifftiau.
