If you are organizing an
event that is geared toward a
broad audience, you can submit
details of the event to the online
calendar.
To do this, click on the plus
symbol that is at the top right
of all events pages. Then you
can fill in details, such as event
sponsor, date and location.
After you submit your
event, a web editor will review
your listing and, if it’s deemed
appropriate, publish the event to
the website.
Alongside the submit button,
you’ll see a download icon,
which will allow you to add
the calendar to your phone or
Outlook.
Virtual desktop migration continues
The CIS department is in the process of upgrading users to the
new virtual desktop called XenDesktop.
We have moved over many users already but because of
scheduling issues, we are extending the project through May. Along
the way, we will be decomissioning old servers.
If you are a VDI user who is still on the old system, please check
the schedule at peoria.medicine.uic.edu/cis/vdi/ for your migration
deadline.
If you have questions, contact us at 671-3400.
Vol. 15 | March 2017 2 What is encryption, and why do you
need it?
Did you know that every hard drive that contains UICOMP data on it needs to be encrypted? This includes external hard drives and USB flash drives. Encryption is the process of converting data into an unrecognizable or “encrypted” form. It is commonly used to protect sensitive information so that only authorized parties can view it. This is especially relevant within UICOMP because the files we carry around on our flash drives on a day to day basis can and often do contain sensitive data personally identifiable information, patient data, and data that would be considered sensitive by the University/State of Illinois. By encrypting your external hard drives and USB flash drives, you are ensuring that should any unauthorized party get ahold of your drive, they would be unable to access the data inside without your password or in some cases, physical access to your computer. How can you be sure your drives are encrypted? If you click your start button and then click computer, look on the left hand side of the window that pops up. You’ll see your hard drive listed as OSDisc (C:) with a lock over the icon. This means your drive is encrypted. If your USB flash drive is encrypted, you’ll notice the same lock icon on that drive as well. If you do not notice this icon, please contact CIS to have your drive encrypted. If you need a new flash drive, purchase it through CIS and we will encrypt it for you. Call us at 671‐3400. ~
Vol. 15 | March 2017 3 Quickly group contacts in Outlook

Follow the steps below to create a contact group from scratch. 1. Click on Contacts 2. Click Create New Contact Group 3. Name the group 4. Click Add Members. There are three ways to add contacts a. From Outlook Contacts – this will bring up UICOMPS Global Address List b. From Address Book – This will bring up your personal address book c. From New email contact – this will bring up the contact creation window ~
Vol. 11 | November 2016 Quick Tips: Word
To select an entire paragraph: Make three rapid clicks anywhere in the paragraph. To select just a sentence: Click anywhere in the sentence while holding down the Ctrl key. To create a horizontal line: type 3 hyphens and then press Enter. Ctrl+ makes a word subscript and Ctrl Shift + makes a word superscript . Pressing DELETE key while holding down Ctrl key deletes the word that follows. Pressing BACKSPACE while holding down Ctrl key deletes the preceding word. Select some text and press Ctrl + Shift + > and the font size will increase. Ctrl + Shift + < will decrease the font size. Would you like to share your tips or ask a question about Word? If so, please submit them to Karen Luna ([email protected]). O F F I C E C O R N E R
