The time of the year we all love has come around again: the start of cricket
season in only weeks away! Welcome everyone to the 2015/16 season, which is
the clubs 25th anniversary and promises to be a HUGE year for the Broadbeach
Robina Cricket Club, the mighty Cat’s. I wish to extend my best wishes to all
players, members, parents and supporters within the Cats Cricket family (new
and existing) and hope that the season brings you success but more importantly
great enjoyment.
There has been lot of work done during the off season to ensure the club strong
both on and off the field. Peter Hill has been retained as club coach and will be
supported by Tom Fleet (while he recovers from a season ending knee injury)
senior coaching group including Shamus Robertson, Ryan Armstrong and
Darren Santer. Other players and external resources will be used from time to
time.

Volume 1, Number 1
On the playing front, there are some really exciting announcements with new
and returning players. Alex Smeeth is returning from the UK. For those who
don’t know, Alex is a class player and was part of the back to back 1st grade
premierships in 2011-12 and 2012-13. The club also welcomes back Luke
Presley from WA. New players to the club this year include Reece McDonald
from Southport and Michael Spargo from Dolphins. Reece has been one of the
leading players in the Gold Coast competition for over a decade. Michael has
QCA first grade experience as well as representing Australia at indoor cricket.
Most of the senior squad has already indicated they are returning and with
players like, Army, Fitzy, Bakes and Joel, the club couldn’t be in a stronger
playing position. This along with the emerging young talent coming through the
junior sides, the on field performances will continue to impress.
The synthetic in the training nets have been completely re-surfaced and those
that have used them so far have provided extremely positive feedback.
Additional lighting has also been installed.
A number of social events are being planned for the season and these will be
posted on facebook, web site and through this newsletter as the dates are
confirmed.

New Life Members
At the AGM in July, Andrew Robson and Jason Cox became Life Members of the
Broadbeach Robina Cricket Club. Both gentlemen have given outstanding
service to the club over a number of years both on the field as players and off
the field on our club committee. They have participated in and supported our
various social and fundraising events and they are always willing to help when
jobs need doing. They are great role models for our younger players and are
outstanding ambassadors for the club in the Gold Coast Cricket community.

GO Fund Me
One of the biggest challenges for community sports groups like BRCC is funding.
It’s becoming ever harder to secure major sponsors.
To help keep the fees low, the club has set up a fundraising campaign through
GoFundMe. Family, friends, co-workers, etc can donate as much or as little as
they like. So far the update has been slow, so please donate, share and
encourage everyone you know to help the club.
Thanks to the following who have donated so far: Kim Ryall-Manley, Blake
Emblem, Tom Fleet, Darren Santer, Richard Kerr and Clare Manley.

Coaches Corner – Peter Hill
Pre- Season Drills for all
1. Hit cricket ball up and down on bat
Hit cricket ball up and down on bat for as many times as possible during the
minute. Make sure you hit the ball at least 30 cm off the bat. Make drill more
difficult by walking around two cones 10 metres apart… then do it jogging…
2. Hit ball against wall Bradman style
Stand 3 metres away from wall, hit tennis ball against wall with cricket bat as
many times as possible in the minute. Make drill harder by using a golf ball…
harder still by wearing an eye-patch on one eye… harder still by using a stump.
3. Tossing and catching a squash ball… using a toilet roll!
Get a used toilet roll (by used I mean the cardboard inner tube… not used toilet
paper!), balance a squash ball on top and toss 30 cm into air before catching in
the toilet roll. Repeat drill as many times as possible in the minute – make it
harder by catching a tennis ball… harder still by using an eye-patch over one
eye (try both eyes covered and working out if you have a better eye).
4. Use the classic ‘hit ball in sock’ backyard drill
Hang a cricket ball in your garage, veranda or clothes line. Hit as many times in
minute as possible. Make drill harder by using a narrow bat, then a stump
(there is a commercial version of the narrow bat drill available but I reckon you
can make your own!)
