Welcome
There’s no such thing as a part-time mission.
At the Y, we’re committed to promoting youth development, healthy living and
social responsibility all day, every day, throughout the day. Season after season,
year after year, we’re there, helping people throughout Greater Cincinnati achieve
their full potential in mind, body and spirit.
Walk through the doors at any of our branches, visit one of our Early Learning
Centers or drop by a Black and Latino Achievers mentoring session and you’ll see
our mission in action.
Yes, we’re about fun. Yes, we’re about good health. But above all, we are about
!
"
from every walk of life to set and achieve their individual goals.
Thanks to our balanced approach we’re improving the quality of life for people of
all ages every day. Because at the Y we understand the time of your life isn’t only a
snapshot from childhood or a carefree summer day. The time of your life is now.

Paving The Way
Asanti Smothers
Toni Smothers sent her children to the Y’s Christ Child Early Learning Center 30
years ago. So when her granddaughter, Asanti’s, neighborhood daycare center
closed, Christ Child was the obvious choice.
“The atmosphere is just very nurturing and caring,” Toni says. “It’s become a family
thing. My son, daughter and niece all went to Christ Child and they all went on to
do really well in school.”
Five-year-old Asanti is following in their footsteps. She’s mastered all the
educational goals on which her family and teachers collaborated. She’s writing
her name, counting, adding and learning to tie her shoes: skills that will serve
her well when she enters kindergarten in the fall.
“She’s ready,” Toni says. “She’s learned so much at Christ Child and now, she’s ready.”

Unlocking Doors
“I owe the Y my life,” Jennifer Petredis says simply.
Two years ago Jennifer’s twins, Aiden and Alex, were diagnosed with severe autism.
In addition to numerous physical problems, the boys wouldn’t speak. They didn’t
interact with the world around them, and their motor skills were underdeveloped.
Then Jennifer visited the Clippard Family YMCA Autism Learning Center (ALC).
“From the moment I walked in, I could see how much the therapists at the Y cared

the ABC song: an indication that he understands what he is learning, despite his
struggle to communicate. Thanks to occupational and physical therapy at the Y,
the boys have both grown stronger and they’re learning to socialize.
While Jennifer celebrates all of these accomplishments, she says it was the moment
last fall when Aiden joyfully greeted her, “Mommy! Mommy!” that made her realize
how far her children have come.
“He’d never called me ‘Mommy’ without me prompting him,” she explains. “I can’t tell
you what it’s like to hear the little voice you’ve waited four years to hear.”

he just laughs and ignores us. He’s a senior too. After class a group of us will stay
and have coffee in the lobby and just socialize.” - Clotilde Royal, Silver Sneakers

Achieving Success
Jonathan Garner goes to a mainstream elementary school. He spends his days with
typical kids doing typical things. But Jonathan isn’t typical. He has Asperger’s Syndrome.
“He has to function in a typical world even though he’s an atypical person,” says
his mother, Shwana. That’s why the adaptive swim program at the Gamble Nippert
YMCA is so important. “It’s the one place where he gets to be himself.”
The program has helped Jonathan improve his swimming and social skills, “and the
coaches are awesome with him,” Shwana says. “They give him a little push. Sometimes
when children have special needs, people don’t place expectations on them. They just
let them go by the wayside or don’t include them. Jonathan likes feeling included.”

with two gold medals.
Shwana recalls the smile on his face. “He was cheesing from ear to ear,” she says.
“Every parent wants their child to experience success. The Special Olympics gave
him that chance.”

Supporting Families
Elijah, Chloe and
Cassidy Harris
“Everybody at the Y is always so friendly and upbeat. The instructors in the program
don’t seem to have bad days. Even the lady that runs the front counter is always
pleasant. They’re good mentors and role models. Miss Ashley is great about helping my
son with his math homework if he needs it. He made the honor role and really excelled
this year, and I think part of that is due to the help he gets at the Y. The Y gives the
kids a chance to unwind after school. My girls like to do the arts and crafts that they
offer and my son likes using the gym to play basketball.” - Jennifer Miller, whose children
participate in the Richard E. Lindner YMCA Afterschool Program

Pure Joy
“I love the water and swimming and swim meets. If I’m going against a very good
swimmer my heart feels like it is thumping out of my chest and I wonder, ‘Am I going
to do good?’ and then — well, I just swim. I love the way the water pushes past my
face, and I just glide through the water. When I touch the wall I’m relieved like, ‘Yes!
It’s over!’ Then I’ll look at the other person and if they’re behind me, I’ll know I did
good, and if they’re in front of me I’ll think, ‘I did my best.’ I just love to swim.”
- Ruby is a sixth grader at Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy. CCPA students
have the opportunity to take swim lessons and participate on a swim team at the
Carl H. Lindner Jr. YMCA. Ruby began taking lessons as a non-swimmer in the
second grade. Thanks to those lessons, she now excels on the swim team.
GREEN WRISTBANDS
Steps to successfully get a green wristband:
1) Swim across the shallow end of the pool.
2) Jump into water that is over the individual’s head and
return to the surface.
3) Swim one length of the pool unassisted and without rest.
4) Tread water for at least one minute, then turn onto back

5) Swim (on front or back) to a ladder or the side of the pool
and exit the pool.

Lighting A Fire
Jalan Harvin has abundant gifts and
great dreams. He likes to draw
animation, composes music and
someday hopes to become a graphic
designer or a sound engineer.
Now, thanks to the YMCA’s Black and
Latino Achievers program, Jalan has the
skills and goals to help him apply his
gifts and achieve his dreams. A junior
at Shroder High School, he’s learned
interviewing and business skills and
)
graphic design and recording programs.
“I have seen Jalan mature since he
joined the Y’s Achievers program,”
says his father, Everett. “It’s really
grounded him. Initially he was the kind
of kid who needed somebody to push
him. Y Achievers has helped Jalan
understand that success takes more
than talent. He has a drive and a
passion now, and he’s with peers who
have the same thought pattern and
the drive to want more.”
“Maturity,” Everett says, “is when you
see a young individual step up and say,
‘This is what we need to do.’ I’m not
just proud of my son: I’m proud of all
the young people in the program.”

Summer
Leading by Example
“I remember how awesome my
counselors at Camp Ernst were when
I was a camper. I felt I could talk to
them about anything: how to deal
with friends or school. They made me
feel like the week I was at camp was
the most important week of the year.
As a counselor I want to bring that to
the kids that I work with. When you
work with six and seven year olds,
they think you are the coolest person
ever. They automatically want to
be your friend. There’s a lot of
responsibility that comes with that.
I need to be a role model. I feel like
I’m part of a cycle.”
- Camp Ernst Counselor Zac Thomas

Thanking Those Who Serve
Carlos Ford served his country. Now the Y is saying thanks.
V4
'
!;'
Carlos Ford, who works out at the Campbell County Y in the evenings. “I see a lot of
regulars come in and they’re always nice and encouraging.”
Located just two blocks from the Veterans Administration Fort Thomas Nursing
Home and Domiciliary, the Campbell County Y supports VA programs for veterans
working to overcome homelessness, post traumatic stress disorder and brain
injuries. Veterans living at the VA facility can use the Y at no charge to workout,
continue their rehabilitation, and interact with members of the community.
YMCA branches throughout Greater Cincinnati likewise participate in a national
program to support eligible military personnel and their families by providing
membership and respite child-care services
during times of deployment.
“Working out at the Y makes me feel
good about myself,” says Carlos, who
plans to return to school after
leaving the VA. “It’s given me
the self esteem I need to keep
moving on.”

support needed to make certain that we continue to do the work we set out to do
over 150 years ago. We were established with the mission of building strong kids,
strong families and strong communities and, today, we are still working hard to
ensure that the YMCA delivers on that mission. Our Heritage Club members partner
with us in this effort as they have designated a gift through their will, bequest or
insurance policy that will ensure we have the funding to do the work we do today
and in the future. We thank those who have joined us in this effort.
