Don’t you hate getting to school
late? Well, there are many ways to
help you get to Devon Aire on
time.
th
Devon Aire's 5 graders went on an
awesome field trip that they are sure
to never forget!
The 5th graders of Devon Aire went
on a field trip to the Biscayne Nature
Center in Crandon Park Key Biscayne, Florida. They had a chance to
participate in the “Seagrass Adventure,” where they drag a net into the
water and scoop up anything that is
down under like seahorses, sea urchins, pipefish, starfish and much
more! Before you go into the water a
naturalist guide will let you know
the species that you will find and
make sure you get a good look at
them before.
5th graders had so much fun getting
to experience something that most of
them have never done before. This
field trip also educated them on
some of the sea life that is around
them whenever they go into the water.
“My favorite part about the field
trip was being in the water and using
the nets to catch the sea life. My
students loved the field trip,” said 5th
grade teacher, Mrs. Pruna.
“I thought it was really good, and I
got to catch crabs and see all the
different sea life. It was great,” said
5th grade student, Joshua Chin-You.
Field Trips + Fifth Grade = FUN
Some ways to help you get to
school on time would be to pick
out your clothes the night before,
and wake up early enough so you
can have time to get ready before
school. Another idea would be to
shower the night before. All these
things can benefit you and help
you with your school activities.
Another great idea is to set your
alarm clock on the far end of your
room so you actually have to get
up and turn it off. By the time you
get up and walk over there, you
won’t be as tired as before.
“To make the transition easier for
the kids, they have been going to
bed and waking up earlier to get
them prepared for those early
school-day mornings. My kids
both require a full 10-11 hours of
sleep to function properly the next
day. That means that if I wake
them up at 6:30 a.m., I have to put
them to bed the night before NO
LATER than 8 p.m. Obviously,
every child is different, but helping
your kids get enough sleep will do
nothing but help them have a great
day at school. Then, it’s off to
bed!”- Jennifer Doyle, an American writer, art historian, blogger,
and Professor of English at the
University of California, Riverside.
By eating a good dinner that won’t
keep you up all night, you can fall
asleep quicker, and you won’t be
tired when you wake up in the
morning.
Following all these examples can
lead to a better lifestyle and help
you with you classes.
Making Friends
~Valeria Berrondo
Have
you
ever had trouble
making
friends? Well,
you’re
not
alone. That’s why I’m here to give
you some tips on how to make
friends… especially if you’re new
to the school.
Making friends may seem a little
hard at first, but it gets easier. According to Jack Harries, you should
definitely treat others with kindness. You want to make friends not
lose friends. Sit around other kids
and introduce yourself. Who
knows... your future best friend
may be sitting right before your

do I do?
Fire drills are very important. They
help you train in case of a fire, so
you know what to do when there is
a serious fire. According to the
Miami-Dade County Public School
Operations Plan, you have to have
at least 1 fire drill per month.
There are 2 drills in August,1 drill
in September, 1 drill in October,1
drill in November, 1 drill in December, 1 drill in January, 1 drill in
February, 1 drill in March,1 drill in

friend is by joining a club. It’s a
great way to meet friends and
have fun at the same time. This
will help you find people with
similar interests. There are many
ways to make friends, you just
have to make a little effort. Joining a club is a really good way to
start out.

out of your life, but only true
friends will leave footprints in
your heart,” said Eleanor Roosevelt, Former First Lady of the

You can also make friends by
joining a sports team or by volunteering around the community.
These are two other amazing
ways to make friends. Some people might even come to you and

February: the Month of
African American Heroes
February is known as the month of
Valentine’s Day, but it should be
better known as African American
History Month, as it was titled in
1915.
This month is important because of
the impact that these amazing individuals had and still have on society, such as Rosa Parks and all she
did to forward her cause for equal
rights. Her example has inspired
many people to stand up for their
rights in a nonviolent way.
Others, such as Jackie Robinson,
broke barriers in other occupations.
Robinson shattered the barrier
keeping Major League baseball an
all-white sport and made it equal
for all. He suffered many hardships including being attacked by
his teammates.
This month-long remembrance of
their hardships and sacrifices
should never be forgotten or overlooked.
In history, there are many people
who are regarded as heroes and
many of them are female. Maya
Angelou, an amazing woman who
was a singer, actress, activist, and
writer, was recognized for her
work. She wanted to be equal with
others in her field and beyond.
“In all my work, what I try to say is
that as human beings we are more
alike than we are unalike.” - Maya
Angelou
All of their sacrifices and tribulations should be remembered and
revered. This month is the time to
learn more about these individuals
and show they are held in the highest regard even after death.
All people deserve equal rights. In
this case, it took a struggle to get
them.

Q: I got invited to two friends’ parties
on the same day. How do I pick
which one to go to without hurting
anyone?
A: After doing some research on the
internet and reading some comments
from people with similar problems, I
came to the conclusion that the way
to choose depends on several things.
Have you answered already? Who
have you answered to? Things like
that will affect the decision, but don’t
worry. I can help you with that.
Though I can’t tell you exactly which
party to attend, I can help you find a
way to choose.
First off, have you said yes to one of
your friends? If so, then you should
just tell the other one that you cannot
go because you already said yes to
someone else. If you’re really friends,
then they will probably understand
and find a way to forgive you.
If you haven’t answered anyone, then
you’ll have to decide. Which one is
your closest friend? This might be
hard to figure out, but if one is your
best friend, then you should attend
that party. Again, just tell your other
friend that you can’t come. They’ll
understand.
If you said yes to both, then you
might be in for some trouble. Since
you can’t attend both at the same
time; you should try to back out of
one of the two without being rude. It
may be difficult, but you need to tell
your friend that you can’t go, they’ll
understand. After all, you there’s no
way you could be in two places at
once.
I can’t promise this will always work,
but at least it should help you decide
which party to attend. Hope this
helped.

Chicken with Strawberry Avocado Salsa
It’s February! Most people know it as the
month for love. Valentine’s Day is meant to
spread love to others, so when do you get to
love yourself? It’s nice to get chocolates once
in a while, but there are foods that taste good
and are healthy for your body.
It’s the most ‘loving’ time of the year. That’s right--February!
We have a few great jokes submitted by you for this new edition! Along with some of your jokes, I’ll put in some February
themed jokes! Have a great Valentine’s Day and Black History
Month!
What you might not know, is that February is
also National Heart Health Month. In honor of
that, here is a sweet and salty dish that is actually good for you: a mixture of fruits that consists of sliced pineapples, avocados and fresh
strawberries. This creates a colorful and tasty
salsa to top the marinated grilled chicken. This
dish is also great with fish, but in this recipe it
will be replaced with chicken. The strawberries help because of vitamin C that can prevent
strokes.
A.
Ingredients:

6 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
(about 2 pounds) or halibut steak (1 ½
pounds)

1 can (8oz) pineapple tidbits or chunks



2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoons sesame oil
1 package (16 ounces or 3 cups) strawberries
1 small avocado, pitted and diced
1/2 to 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and
minced
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoons onion salt




Directions:
Place chicken in a shallow dish. Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Measure 2 tablespoons of
juice into a medium bowl and set aside. Pour
remaining pineapple juice, soy sauce and sesame oil over chicken. Turn chicken to coat
evenly. Cover and refrigerate 20 minutes.
Hull/remove stem and leaves of strawberries
and cut into 3/4-inch cubes. Add strawberries,
pineapple, and avocado, jalapeño to taste, balsamic vinegar and onion salt to reserved pineapple juice in bowl. Stir gently to combine. Let
stand for flavors to blend while grilling chicken.
Remove chicken from marinade and discard
marinade. Grill or broil until cooked through,
about 6 to 7 minutes per side, (internal temperature should reach 165Fº). Serve chicken with
strawberry avocado salsa.
So now you can give love to others and show
love to yourself!

Have you every been on Valentine's

Well, watching a movie is a great
thing to do with your friends on Vday. I recommend a cute and silly
Valentine's Day themed movie for
the elementary kids like Charlie
Brown Valentine's Day or Lady and
the Tramp. You can also watch a
cute a silly classic Disney movie
with your friends and family. For
the middle school, I recommend a

how much tiles you can get on the
line without breaking it. Tapping the
tiles at different times changes the
colors, which are blue, yellow, and
orange. Blue means that you missed
hitting the tile on the line and it
breaks your combo. Yellow means
that you hit it close to the line but
didn’t hit it on the line. Orange
means that you hit the tile on the line
perfectly and the word “Charming”
appears. There is a yellow tile that
you have to the slide. This means
you have to click on it and hold and
slide to the way the tiles are going.
You can also change the difficulty
and speed of the tiles to suit your
experience. The three different diffi-
culties are easy, normal and hard. If
you choose harder difficulties, then
there’s more tiles. The highest
speed you can choose is nine, and
the slowest speed is one. The higher the speed, the faster the tiles
come.

A Corner on Health
~Juliette Guerra
Keep your Heart Healthy for Heart Health Month!
Most kids these days are playing video games indoors
and eating unhealthy foods all the time, but did you
know that doing all of this is hurting your heart? Healthy
eating and physical activity prevents heart disease and
strengthens your heart’s health.
There are many methods to having a healthier heart, such as staying active, eating smart and being well
nourished
with
the
right
vitamins
(http://www.ucsfhealth.org/education/
heart_health_benefits_of_physical_activity/) . Playing sports outside and dancing are a great way to help
your heart, but make sure to be hydrated with enough water (http://heart.org/HEARTORG/GettingHealthy/
PhysicalActivity/FitnessBasics/Staying-Hydrated---Staying-Healthy_UCM_441180_Article.jsp) . If you’re
not really the sporty or dance type, then you should try singing! For good singers and bad, singing increases
your heart health too.
If you want a healthy heart, you can start by being active in sports or having a workout routine to better your
heart. There are innumerable ways to have a healthy heart, and it doesn’t have to be just by going to a gym
and lifting weights, doing pushups, or running on the treadmill. You can also dance! Any type of dancing
can count as an exercise because you are using your muscles and working them out all the while having fun.
Have fun watching, and have a
Happy Valentine's day!
Another healthy activity is singing, and you don’t have to be an expert to sing. Just do your own thing!
Singing helps lift your spirits and lets your energy out, making you feel better. As said in
(http://heartresearch.org.uk/fundraising/sing-your-heart), singing helps your heart because it increases the
oxygen in your blood stream and exercises big muscle groups in your upper body, even if you’re sitting
down while doing it. Singing can also reduce stress through a system in your body that affects our emotional
well-being.
Eating foods with lots of nutrition can also benefit your heart’s health. Some helpful foods like salmon or
other fish, such as sardines or mackerel ,can help because they contain omega-3, which is a very healthful
vitamin. Try avoid eating meals with too much sodium or fatty foods like fries, cake, cookies and so on.
Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that you can’t ever have these foods again. You can eat these foods once in a
little while, as long as its balanced with other healthy components in your meal, or if it’s a special occasion
and you want to relax and celebrate. (http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20307113_2,00.html)

Textbooks a Problem of the Past
~Jordi Gonzalez
Tired of having to carry around heavy textbooks to school every day? The lightweight, portable, and easily accessible solution is here!
You might have a smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, or a combination of the aforementioned items, and you might also have to carry heavy textbooks
to class every day, fortunately, this arduous process is ending soon.
Many students are familiar with http://www.dadeschools.net, the online portal to access your grades, FCAT scores, or even receive Microsoft Office
for free. Many students are not familiar with online textbooks, which many teachers are starting to use. Online textbooks can be as light as a phone or
as heavy a desktop computer, as all you need to access them is an internet connection and a way to use it. In fact, it’s as easy as logging into dadeschools.net and clicking a button, on your phone, your tablet, or your desktop computer; online textbooks can be used just about anywhere.
First, log into the student portal at dadeschools.net, there are many ways to get in; if you don’t know how to log into the student portal, you should ask
your teacher. Next, scroll down until you see a list of classes. You should see a purple book under a tab labeled, “eTextbook” Clicking this purple
book will bring you to a corresponding eTextbook for the corresponding class; however, not all classes have eTextbooks. If you have any questions
about eTextbook access, your teacher can answer them
“Let’s say you forgot your book at school and you need the book, you can go on your portal, log in, and the book will be there. It’s that easy.”
- Yasmanny Vega
Once you access your online textbook, you might feel weight lifting off of your shoulders, literally! If you ask your teacher, they might allow you to
use the online textbook in class, freeing your backpack of a lot of weight. According to Mr. Alvarez, a teacher who teaches difficult courses such as
Algebra and Geometry, textbooks are “excellent resources to gain knowledge.”
In some classes, tablets are being used so that students don’t have to use physical textbooks in class. The future is here, and the future is online textbooks.
